1 Calhoun Online Learning Academy 2020-2021 COLA Jr. Student Handbook 2020-2021 This handbook is a guide. The information enclosed is in addition to the guidelines, rules and requirements established in the Calhoun Primary School, Calhoun Elementary School, Calhoun Middle School and Calhoun High School handbook. The CPS/CES/CMS/CHS Student Handbook may be accessed on the Calhoun City Schools’ website. Additionally, should a dispute arise, The District Handbook will supersede this handbook and each school’s handbook. Please note: this handbook is subject to review and change at any time during the school year, should the need arise. The District handbook can also be accessed on the Calhoun City Schools’ website (www.calhounschools.org).

3 Calhoun Online Learning Academy 2020-2021 CONTACT INFORMATION Feel free to contact your child’s homeroom teacher for any questions or concerns. The easiest way to contact them is through REMIND 101 or email. Weekly contact will be made with each Cola Jr. student parent and/or guardian. We welcome any questions or concerns as well as positive feedback during these calls. We are here to help! You may also contact any of the people listed below as needed. Thank you in advance for letting us know. REMIND 101 A Remind 101 account has been set up for important information to be sent as a text to your cell phone. From your cell phone, please sign up to receive these reminders by doing the following: Send this text: @colajr to this number: 81010 To receive messages to your email, do the following: Send an email to colajr@mail.remind.com. Please note that each homeroom teacher also has a Remind 101 account that they would like you to be a part of as well. Teachers, however, will not be able to
4 Calhoun Online Learning Academy 2020-2021 respond to their classroom Remind 101 or emails until their planning time or after school. To unsubscribe, reply with 'unsubscribe' in the subject line. Please do this as soon as possible to receive information. Parents, guardians, or students may want to sign up to receive the same information. This is especially important for emergencies or school closings. COLA JR. PROCEDURES AND INFORMATION SIGN-IN Your child will need to login to their computer using the information given to them at the beginning of each school year. Each child has their own login and password. If you need to be reminded of this information, please email your homeroom teacher. Once logged in… please also have your child login to their google classroom and COLA Jr. The google login information is the same as the computer. Cola Jr. will have a separate login which is also given at the beginning of each year. Please contact your homeroom teacher or any of the contacts above if you need the Cola Jr. login information. ATTENDANCE Attendance is required each day for COLA Jr. students. Student attendance will be collected through the electronic platform daily. Students will be prompted daily inside of google classroom to answer an attendance question. When students answer the question, they will be counted present for the day. If a student is absent for any reason, the homeroom teacher must be notified. If a student is absent for 3 consecutive days without notification to the COLA staff members, the Attendance officer will contact the parent/guardian to determine the reason for the absence.
5 Calhoun Online Learning Academy 2020-2021 *In the event that a COLA Jr. student wishes to return to the traditional school setting, parents should provide the school principal a five day notice of this decision. COMPUTERS/INTERNET 1. Upon request, COLA Jr. students will be assigned a computer to use at home. 2. When a student receives his/her computer, the parent should make sure there are no damages to the keyboard, screen or computer. If there are any damages, Mrs. Melanie Harwell should be notified immediately. 3. Internet access must be available for COLA Jr. Participation. It is too difficult to complete assignments on a tablet or phone. It is the responsibility of the parent to maintain working equipment. 4. If there are damages to the computer, keyboard or mouse and it is not reported, the student using the computer prior to the damage being reported will be responsible for paying for damages. Please refer to computer acknowledgement document. 5. It is a violation of your agreement, to share your login information with another student. 6. Computer Vandalism: Modifications to operating system are not allowed and will result in the loss of computer privileges at all Calhoun City Schools facilities for a minimum of one year and up to three years. 7. If your child experiences a problem with the device you are using at home or does not have a device, please reach out to your homeroom teacher or anyone listed as a contact on page 3. ASSIGNMENT/QUIZ/EXAM INFORMATION 1. Cola Jr. Assignments should be completed daily as assigned in the online platform. There is no required “schedule” for time online, although we recommend establishing a consistent time schedule for your family.
6 Calhoun Online Learning Academy 2020-2021 2. Students should also complete any work given in their homeroom google classroom daily. 3. All assignments, quizzes and exams should be turned in electronically unless prior permission has been given by a staff member. 4. If the assignment gives you a page to download, please use this. You can type your answers on the page online which goes to the grading cycle list to be graded. We will need to show you how to save your PDF to type and send to us. Please ask a COLA Jr. staff member or your homeroom teacher how to proceed if you have this type of assignment. Assignments saved incorrectly could result in answers being omitted and the assignment to be repeated by the student. 5. Students should not plagiarize, cheat or gain unauthorized access to material, tamper with information, copy and paste the questions and answers, give or receive test information, or forge signatures. Disciplinary action will be taken if cheating occurs. GRADING Grading and feedback will be provided to COLA Jr. students as quickly as possible. Grading will consist of grades from Cola Jr. assignments, homeroom google classroom assignments, virtual observational notes (when possible during google meet meetings), and assignment rubrics. Students will receive a standard report card at the end of each term. COLA JR.ONLINE PLATFORM INFORMATION Lesson –Three (3) attempts then you will be advanced to the next assignment Quiz – Two (2) attempts and then advanced to next assignment Test – One (1) attempt then advanced to next assignment Exam – One (1) attempt ● Any quiz with a score of less than 20% will automatically be reassigned and all answers will be lost. ● True/False questions will NOT be reset.
7 Calhoun Online Learning Academy 2020-2021 ● Once ALL of your courses are 100% complete (or agreed upon percentage) you will be allowed one (1) extra attempt per assignment to retake any assignments with low grades ● Essays in lessons, quizzes, tests, and exams are part of the curriculum and should be written in your own words. ● No checks can be given on pretest. ● No reset will be given on grades above 90. ● Quizzes and lessons should be taken with thoughtful consideration. Suspected of “Christmas treeing” answers will not be tolerated, and additional attempts will not be granted. BEHAVIOR Each year the Flippen Group recognizes and celebrates schools and districts that go the extra mile each day, building an environment where students are relationally connected and eager to learn. As part of their recognition program, review teams visit schools and determine if the Capturing Kids’ Hearts framework has been implemented with fidelity and if the school improvement data supports what they find on their visit and review. The Flippen Group visited Calhoun Primary and Elementary Schools during the 2019-2020 school year. They interviewed students, teachers, parents, administrators and staff and reviewed school improvement data. What they found was an increase in student achievement and academic performance, improved
8 Calhoun Online Learning Academy 2020-2021 attendance rates, decreased discipline referrals, and a positive school climate and culture at Calhoun Primary and Elementary School. Below are some of the ways that we try to capture hearts and are ideas that could help at home as well. Each classroom starts by creating a social contract and encourages great behavior by asking questions to stay on track.
