UPDATE FROM CEO SUMMER 2018 The following represents some of the activities and events happening across all of the Partnership's programmes and projects since my last update in April 2018. As always, I wish to ensure that we share developments, as they happen, throughout the Partnership. If you have anything you would like me to include going forward, please email me with details. The process of developing a new Strategic Plan for the organisation for 2019 to 2022 is well underway. Kieran Murphy has expertly facilitated a number of consultations to date, including the staff consultation on Tuesday, 22nd May at the Larch Hill Scouting Centre, as part of our last Staff Day. Kieran has now produced a report on the outcomes of the four consultation sessions held to date, which will help guide the next phase of the process. It is clear that the timing is right for the development of a new Strategic Plan for the organisation. We will be consulting with staff again as part of the next phase of the process over the coming months.
Staff Day Working together... Fresh air and sunshine were great ingredients for our early summer get together for planning and team- building activities at Larch Hill. Situated on the edge of the Dublin / Wicklow mountains, in a picturesque valley between Kilmashogue and Tibradden mountains, there was space to breathe, relax and enjoy each other’s company in a day filled with discussions, ideas, activities, good food and learning from our hosts, Scouting Ireland.
SAYING GOODBYE TO: Best wishes to Anita Kulon who recently returned to Poland, her homeland. We greatly appreciate the valuable contribution she made during her time with the Partnership. As you all know, Anita was our photographer at so many events. She ensured that we had photographs right up to her last day with us. She also designed many of our flyers and posters for our projects and programmes. We appreciate her attention to detail and commitment to expertly finishing every job and project. SAYING HELLO TO: Welcome to Sean O’Kelly, who is working as an intern with us for 3 months and who has become a Disability Ambassador for the organisation. He is based in the Innovation Centre in Blackrock. He welcomes contact with staff throughout the Partnership in relation to any queries regarding making Southside Partnership as disability friendly as possible. This may be in relation to the physical environment our policies and procedures. Sean is happy to share his expertise with you. He is also happy to assist in relation to your digital marketing requirements. One of Sean’s favourite mottos is “Feel the fear and do it anyway” from the book of the same name by Susan Jeffers. Sean has done various college courses in the business, IT and digital marketing fields. Sean has been a disability activist since 2016. His first exposure to educating people about disability and its challenges was while on work experience with the Access Officer in DLRCoCo. He helped with workshops on disability awareness during Social Inclusion Week for first year secondary school students. He subsequently facilitated further school workshops, which he enjoyed very much.
In 2016, Sean was stranded at Clontarf DART station going to a driving lesson, because the lift was out of order and he had not been informed. As a result, he set up a campaign called ‘A day in my wheels’ where he invites politicians and others to spend a day in a wheelchair to experience the challenges. This is also aimed at the general public. Sean is pictured here with Anton Savage who successfully completed ‘A day in my wheels’ around Dublin City. Sean is delighted to have the opportunity of working with the staff in Southside Partnership DLR. You can contact Sean at: Sean.O’Kelly@sspship.ie We are also delighted to welcome (Yanjie) Patricia Pan who has joined us as an Intern for 6 weeks, working on financial and other projects. Originally from China, Patricia is studying accounting and finance at Indiana University, Kelley School of Business, USA. Patricia is currently participating in a UCD Summer Internship Program. Patricia is willing to learn about the community sector while helping out with a variety of tasks as required. One of Patricia’s favourite quotes is: “To be able, at any moment, to sacrifice what you are, for what you will become.” Eric Thomas
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) The Dundrum Town Centre Management team spent a day at the Hillview Resource Centre recently as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programme. This was organised by Lisa Walsh and the Operations Manager in Dundrum. Twenty-four of the Dundrum Town Centre staff rolled up their sleeves and got busy with gardening, painting and putting up fences, and they completely transformed the children’s play area in Hillview. This is a great example of how working in partnership with employers can benefit our local communities. Social Enterprise Clara Clarke, a founder member of Cycling Without Age, provided a key input to our April 'Starting a Social Enterprise' Information Session. This was followed by a 6-week 'Starting a Social Enterprise' series of workshops, with tutor Caroline Egan of CramdenTECH. The series just ended, with terrific feedback from the 8 budding social entrepreneurs who attended. This brings the numbers, who have attended social enterprise training with SSP since November 2017 to 20 people, with more individuals regularly contacting the Partnership enquiring about supports. Social Enterprise is an exciting new area of development for Southside Partnership with supports being developed on an ongoing basis for individuals and community groups – both within the Partnership and through networking in the Dublin area and nationally. The Partnership is running Information Sessions to help people better understand this area of work, meet people for one-to-ones, ensure people have (or are referred into) the best support and information, Cycling Without Age provide training and also develop networking Clara Clark is one of the Founders of the Irish opportunities for those interested in this form of chapter of Cycling without Age. enterprise. NEW DASHBOARD ON IRIS TO MONITOR PERFORMANCE Southside Partnership DLR recently submitted a SICAP mid-term report to the DLR Local Community Development Committee (LCDC). As you can see from the graphics below,we are on track to deliver our 2018 annual plan. KPI 1 relates to groups and KPI 2 relates to individuals. Below, you can see the types of interventions that our SICAP staff provide to support Local Community Groups (LCGs) in DLR.
In the table below, you can also see a breakdown of the profile of the individuals that we are working with and also the national averages. Southside Partnership Local Employment Service (LES) Contract renewed to 31st December 2018 We are glad to report that our contract to operate the LES in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown has been renewed by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP). As in previous years, we will be engaging with DEASP later this year in relation to the 2019 contract. The Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) has requested multi-annual contracts, of at least 3 years, from DEASP. A report by Indecon on the LES programme nationally is due to be released in the coming weeks. We expect the report to contain some recommendations to improve the LES contracting process and to highlight the need to broaden the definition of progressions to include part-time employment, community employment and Tús. Our LES team is promoting the service to all job seekers in the county, including to those who are not currently receiving a jobseekers payment. All referrals welcome!
Feedback from the recent children’s archaeology workshops Dr. Mark Powers, supported Southside Partnership with the development of children’s archaeology courses and provided fantastic student experiences. The teachers ‘dug deep’ in their praise.... "The children really enjoyed the experience of having archaeologist, Dr. Mark Powers, in the classroom. It was truly exciting to participate in a real life dig and uncover artifacts. Among the highlights were imitating rock art on real stones, learning about bog bodies, the archaeology of Dublin and of course the dig itself. It was most stimulating and educational for the children and embodied a hands-on active-learning approach. I would love this experience in any future class I teach." Ms. Casey , 4th Class, St. Joseph's School, Dun Laoghaire. "We were very lucky that both Holy Family and St. Joseph's National schools got to take part in this pilot programme. The professionalism, rich and varied content and active-learning lessons were enthralling for the children. The big highlight was having the tools and resources for the classes involved to discover artefacts in a specially designed archaeological pit in the schools. I am very grateful to Southside Partnership and Dr. Powers for providing us access to such a wonderful and unique experience" Ms. Donnelly, Home-School Liaison, Holy Family/St. Josephs School, Dun Laoghaire Next Step Fitness: Certificate Awards Ceremony Keeping Fit and Staying Fit!
