Issue 588 31 July 2018 Our priorities for 2018/19 – our ‘plan on a page’ We know how confusing it can be sometimes for everyone connected with our hospitals to understand the wide variety of strategies and plans and how they all fit together. To help, every year we outline what our key priorities are for the coming year. The NHS is certainly changing very fast! There is obviously lots of things going on but these are the things that we’re committed to putting a real focus on. Rather than these priorities be in a corporate report somewhere for no-one to see, we thought it was important that we share them with our staff, patients, and the general public. That is why we produce a graphic version of our priorities – we like to call it our ‘plan on a page’. This plan on a page is displayed on big boards throughout our hospitals, put on our website, and shared via social media. Our plan on a page for 2018/19 is now up on the walls across our three main hospitals and we are in the process of sharing it with our community colleagues. As with previous plans, this one is split into our five pillars – strategy, quality and safety, per- formance, partnership, and engagement, and highlights the areas under each of the pillars that we are focusing on this coming year. You can see the plan on a page in full on our website at:www.uhmb.nhs.uk/about-us/ our-plan/. UHMBT shortlisted for three national HR awards UHMBT has been shortlisted for three national Personnel Today awards. The awards the Trust is running for are: the Apprenticeship Employer of the Year; Employee Engagement; and David Wilkinson, UHMBT Director of People and Organisational Development, has been shortlisted for HR Director of the Year. The results of the awards will be revealed at an Awards ceremony on 21 November 2018 at Grosvenor House in London. Corporate Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional Annual Report The 2017/18 Corporate Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional Annual Report has been published. Sue Smith, Executive Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Our staff, at every level of the organisation, delivers extraordinary care and continue to go above and beyond what is asked of them every single day. Their pride in the quality of patient care and their support for each other is clear to see and I would like to acknowledge this and thank them both from a professional perspective and from a per- sonal one. I am proud and humbled to represent them at Board. Thank you all.” View the full report here.

Consultant-led ward rounds benefitting Orthopaedic Care Daily ward rounds led by consultants have been introduced across UHMBT to help improve the safety and experience of orthopaedic patients across Morecambe Bay. Keogh ward rounds were first introduced at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary in January 2017, followed by Furness General Hospital in April 2017. They have since been improving care at the Trust by standardising patient reviews and building a strong communication channel between patients and clinicians. The ward rounds also help to improve patient flow through the hospital as patients receive the right care at the right time from the right clinician. Organ donor plaque re-unveiling A ceremony was held at the Renal Unit at WGH to unveil the Kendal Organ Donor Town plaque, which was sadly vandalised and stolen some time ago. Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron joined Rachael Hogg from the Kendal Organ Donor Town committee and Nikki Hargreaves from NHS Blood and Transplant to unveil the plaque in its new home. Rachael said: “In 2016 I received my second kidney transplant from my husband Chris during his mayoral year and we made organ donation our priority for the year. We set a target to increase the number of donors in Kendal by 1,000 – something we outstripped. Since then we have increased the number of donors by 25% and now 47% of the population is on the organ donor register.” Read the full story on the news section of the staff intranet or click here Rollout of NEWS 2 We are aiming for NEWS 2 to be rolled out at the start of October 2018. Issue 588 31 July 2018 Share your experience of flu – how has it affected you? In preparation for this year’s flu vaccination process, the Occupational Health Team are working on ways to encourage staff to make sure they get their vaccine in time and help prevent a serious outbreak during the vital winter months. The team would like to hear from you if you have previously experienced flu and did not get vaccinated. What impact did it have on you? And would you consider getting vaccinated this year? By sharing your own experiences, we hope it will encourage others to get vaccinated when the time comes. If you would like to help by sharing your own story please contact Clare Hill, Occupational Health Manager clare.hill@mbht.nhs.uk Support for staff with needle phobia Occupational Health will be holding an awareness stand to support any members of staff who suffer with needle phobia (trypanophobia) to try and overcome their fears in a supportive, gentle, evidence-based approach. To find out more please come along to: RLI: 12.30-2pm, main entrance, Centenary building WGH: 12.30-2pm, main entrance FGH: 12.30-2pm, main entrance on level 4. Menopause course available from Occupational Health The Occupational Health team at the Trust offers a relaxed and supportive course offering practical help and advice for women who are going through the menopause. Senior Therapist Carole Richardson and Occupational Health Manager Clare Hill decided to devise the course after seeing more and more women who were presenting with at least 7+ symptoms. At the time there was very little support available for women of a certain age who were going through the menopause. Most of the time women were feeling that they were in the early stages of dementia, that their bodies had become radiators, that they were becoming irritable and snappy. Carole Richardson, Senior Therapist says; “It’s a real privilege to be in a roomful of hormonal women who come in feeling that they are losing the plot and leave knowing that the reason they are bonkers is all due to that rascal oestrogen. The course is relaxed, and uses real funny stories to put everyone at ease. This atmosphere allows the women to understand what is happening to them, look at what helps, and most important of all to share with other women who understand. The provision of chocolate biscuits also helps!” The courses run throughout the year at all three main hospital sites. The feedback is fantastic, so if you are suffering with menopause symptoms or worried about going through the menopause come and join us by booking via TMS. The NHS70 Parliamentary Awards, sponsored by IBM and Teva, were launched in February to recognise the massive contribution made by the individuals who work in and alongside the NHS. MPs in England were asked to nominate individuals and teams serving their constituents across ten categories. Regional champions were selected in May, with the national winners chosen by a panel of senior leaders representing staff and patients.
