Art of Elan and The San Diego Museum of Art Announce Two
  Upcoming Virtual SDMA+ Offerings

As 2021 kicks off, Art of Elan and The San Diego Museum of Art continue their
creative partnership and commitment to presenting musical interpretation of
works in the Museum collection. Originally conceived as live "pop-up" concerts,
both organizations worked to re-frame the presentations as part of the
  Museum's growing Virtual SDMA+ programming.

Virtual SDMA+ Art of Elan presents: "Identities"
  Jan 22, 7pm
  Video Premiere

PERFORMERS: Andrew Hayhurst (cello), Travis Maril (viola), Kate Hatmaker
  (violin)

The Virtual SDMA+ Art of Elan "Identities" video premiere will be shared on
Friday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m. PT on The San Diego Museum of Art
YouTube channel and is available for free streaming thereafter.

                                             Spanish multidisciplinary artist Ana de
                                             Alvear's contemporary work shifts
perceptions and perspectives in a way
                                             that's both subtle and transformative.
A search for identity pervades her
                                             multifaceted projects. Her work is
                                             explored through this engaging online
video performance by Art of Elan
Anna Thorvaldsdottir musicians, including Executive and
                                             Artistic Director Kate Hatmaker,
featuring the haunting "Spectra" for violin, viola, and cello by Icelandic
composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. This will be the San Diego premiere of this
TR/PR Public Relations & Marketing - Art Of Elan
atmospheric work, filmed safely at The San Diego Museum of Art.

"When I first listened to "Spectra," I was
thinking of the word spectral, meaning
ghosts, rather spectrum, as in a range of
things or band of colors. For me the
                                     piece is quite haunting," explained
Travis Maril (viola.) "There are places
where we are asked to make sounds
with our instruments that sound like a
                                     ghostly inhalation and exhalation, and
Travis Maril other icy and shivery sounds permeate
the work. Playing without an audience
and within the empty museum, these stark sounds of breathing are powerful.
That power is amplified when stepping back and resonating in the larger
background of our current COVID environment."

Virtual SDMA+ Art of Elan presents "Abstraction & Allegory"
Feb 19, 7pm
Video Premiere/Art of Elan Commission

Unsuk Chin, Advice from a Caterpillar (2007), from Alice in Wonderland
Andrea Isabel González, Jabberwocky (2021), World Premiere

PERFORMER: Joshua Rubin (bass clarinet)

The Virtual SDMA+ Art of Elan "Abstraction & Allegory" video premiere will be
shared on Friday, February 19 at 7:00 p.m. PT on The San Diego Museum
of Art YouTube channel and is available for free streaming thereafter.

This multi-media performance video takes its inspiration from the thoughtful
works of photographic art currently on display in Masters of Photography:
The Garner Collection at The San Diego Museum of Art, which features
iconic images by some of the most famous photographers from the 20th
century to the present.

                                             As a direct tie-in to the exhibit's
                                             "Manipulating Reality" theme, Art of
Elan takes a closer look at the
                                             power of transformation, featuring
                                             two incredibly compelling pieces of
                                             music for solo clarinet and
                                             multimedia: "Advice from a
                                             Caterpillar" for bass clarinet from
the opera "Alice in Wonderland" by
                 Unsuk Chin
                                             South Korean composer Unsuk
Chin, and "Jabberwocky" by Mexican composer Andrea González. This
colorful and fantastical online program, featuring internationally acclaimed
clarinetist Joshua Rubin, will be the world premiere performance of González's
work, which was inspired by the Lewis Carroll poem and was created for Art of
Elan as a companion piece for this special Virtual SDMA+ concert.

"This work has been really interesting to
make because it is the first time I made
TR/PR Public Relations & Marketing - Art Of Elan
this kind of project where I can include
                                     video, an instrument and electronics.
'Jabberwocky' is a nonsense poem that
leaves an open interpretation about what's
happening so that was what I wanted to
tell in this piece," said Andrea Gonzalez,
                                     a resident of Querétaro, México

"I'll be playing two pieces that were
inspired by the works of Lewis Carroll,
         Andrea González
whose ideas permeated the imagination of
so many artists in the 20th and 21st century," explained Joshua Rubin. "The
                                                notorious chapter where Alice
seeks advice from a caterpillar is
depicted by the bass clarinet in
her opera, and that's the scene
that I'll be playing. I'm an
                                                enormous fan of composer
                                                Andrea González's video
                                                pieces that create touching and
                                                dynamic sonic landscapes. For
Joshua Rubin this concert, she wrote a brand
new piece for bass clarinet and
video based on the Jabberwocky, the poem that somehow conjures so many
images while being built from nonsense."
