Bach Prélude Allemande Courante Sarabande Menuets I & II Gigue Suite for solo cello Gaspar Cassadó Preludio—Fantasia Sardana Intermezzo e Danza Finale Stoke Newington Early Music Festival is generously sponsored by
Cello Suites by JS Bach and Gaspar Cassadó Johann Sebastian Bach and his seminal cello suites need little intro- duction. Gaspar Cassadó was active as both a cellist and composer in the 20th century. His musical pedigree includes studying the cello with Pablo Casals, and composition with Manuel De Falla and Maurice Ravel. Although very separate from each other in terms of the time and place of their composition, Bach and Cassadó’s respective cello suites both have dance at their heart. Both works begin with a Prel- ude, an introduction to the work with an improvised flavour. Then we move into the world of dance, Bach using courtly dances such as Allemandes and Minuets, Cassadó using Spanish folk dances such as the Sardaña and the Jota. Bach’s writing employs frequent double stops and chords, giving the impression of more than one line of music going on despite the single instrument. Cassadó also uses these techniques as well as harmonics and left hand pizzicato to create a whole pallet of sounds and colours. J S Bach Suite in D minor for solo cello This work begins with a soulful and searching Prélude, followed by a stately and serious Allemande. The following Courante is lively and capricious ,moving in running semiquavers throughout. The Sara- bande uses rich chords to create a deep sonority and is the emotional heart of this work. The two Minuets are graceful and light and the rambunctious Gigue that follows brings the work to an energetic con- clusion. Gaspar Cassadó Suite for solo cello Cassado’s Prélude is quite different, a bold and assertive opening gives way later to more tender colours. The following Sardaña begins with very high, flute-like harmonics, before moving into an infectious- ly rhythmical dance. The last movement begins with a turbulent inter- mezzo, shifting between emotional outpouring and more intimate pizzicato chords, also eventually moving into a lively dance bringing the work to a close. © Josh Salter 2021

About Stoke Newington Early Music Festival Stoke Newington Early Music Festival, founded by Vanessa Coode, is a community event that has brought the finest Mediaeval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical music to Stoke Newing- ton for a quarter of a century. The Festival’s ‘home’ is The Old Church next to Clissold Park. Built in 1563, this is the only Elizabethan church in London.
