PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 Hi everyone It seems like only a few weeks ago that I wrote my report for the last Newsletter before Finally thanks to Michael Cheyne and John Billing our Honorary Accountant and Reviewer who Christmas and what has changed? Well, the weather for one thing with the whole country do such a good job on our accounts each year. John sent me an email today in part saying the enjoying or suffering from the heat wave generated by hot weather flying across the Tasman from following: Australia. “I have just completed my review of the 2018 accounts. Mary and Michael have done a fine job Many local rivers in Hawkes Bay are almost dry in places and the same is happening I once again and everything is very much in order. Very few organisations would have their annual understand in the South Island with some big fish being caught. All this time the trusty Tongariro accounts prepared and reviewed within a month of the end of the financial year”. continues to flow, albeit at a slower pace, into Lake Taupo and there is plenty of fishing in other Tight Lines lakes and smaller streams in our region. What a wonderful place to have a facility such as ours!! Ken Haines As I have mentioned before we developed our TALTAC Operating Plan in 2016 in an effort to President 2018-2019 provide the committee with hard facts and figures upon which we could make short and long term decisions for the betterment (and continued existence) of the club for our 500+ members from NZ and overseas. A huge amount of work went into it from several committee members and it is an excellent Plan by anyone’s standards. One of the outstanding facts is that apart from the peak months of August, September and October (when it is 84-90%) cabin utilisation is less than 50% and in the summer months it is well down on that. Even April and May bed- night occupancy can be as low as 20-30%. In other words the club is largely unoccupied for several months of the year and does not generate income. In the meantime costs are increasing, maintenance work still has to be done (although we believe we have finished of our major projects on the cottage, re-roofing part of the lodge, upgrading showers, replacing some wall cladding on the lodge and most recently painting a fair proportion of the lodge and cottage). How do we overcome that problem? Enrol new members? Increase annual subs? Increase accommodation fees? Encourage more members to bring their families to the club in the quieter times? We have money in the bank but some of that needs to be retained “for a rainy day” or rather a “disastrous day” to cover insurance excesses should we be badly affected by a natural disaster and also as a reserve for any major works we suddenly have to do. As you know from my previous reports your committee is working on a plan to bring more people to the club in the quiet times and many of you have agreed with me that the provision of a storage building for bikes (especially) would encourage them to come more frequently in the summer with their families. I know some of you disagree but times have changed and we have to look to the future to both grow our membership and increase our income without increasing subs and accommodation fees. We’re still working on that and looking for the best deal. I would like the thank Mary for the sterling work she has done yet again over the last twelve months. Mary, you are an amazing person as the manager of the club, your knowledge of members is second to none and you are great to work with as President. Along with Mary the committee members use their own skills in helping to run the club and you should all be very grateful for the work they do. Let’s also thank Helen Swetman and Ian Merson for their continued great work and Jim Allison who does so many things around the club that most of us don’t know about. We will have a special way of thanking Russell Bee at our AGM later this month. photo John Morgan 04 TALTAC NEWSLETTER- FEBRUARY 2019 Email: taltac@xtra.co.nz TALTAC NEWSLETTER- FEBRUARY 2019 Email: taltac@xtra.co.nz 05
