“Peace be with you.” This past weekend was Divine Mercy Sunday, and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has remarked that “In our time, humanity needs a strong proclamation and witness of God’s mercy.” Mercy is at the center of our Gospel message and, with this in mind, is how I approached my homily this past weekend. When Christ breathed the Spirit into the Apostles, He gave them the power to forgive sins. Who among us can say that they are free from sin and does not need God’s mercy? It was Pope John Paul II who instituted Divine Mercy Sunday to be the second Sunday of Easter because it was the Lord’s wish to thwart the ideologies of evil, nazism and communism. As He expressed it to St. Faustina Kowalska. Jesus instructed her to promote veneration of the image of Him as painted by Eugeniusz Kazimirowski which was displayed at the Shrine of Our Lady of Ostrabrama in Vilnius, Lithuania on April 26-28, 1935. The painting was later kept at St. Michael’s Church in Vilnius, until the Soviets closed the church in 1948. It was later hidden at Vilnius’ Dominican church, then in a church in Belarus. It was returned to Lithuania and to the public view as communism was falling. The words “Jesus I trust in You” was Jesus’s signature on it, and for anyone who venerated this image, Jesus promised that they will not perish. We actually have this image in our Church at St. Elizabeth's! In Baptism, we become children of God and heirs to the kingdom. But it is through the sacrament of Penance that we receive God’s mercy and complete forgiveness of sins. Pope Francis has said, “Everything is revealed in mercy; everything is resolved in the merciful love of the Father.” If we can grow in joy of the Sacraments, then nothing will ever be the same for those who experience the embrace of God’s joy. Amen Seminarian Robert Food bags: Brown bags will be available after all Masses this weekend.
