Robert has completed his tractors and trailers—they look so colourful— and fun! You are so very talented Robert. Have you lost any clothing? You will find lost items of clothing in the Activities room of the Resthome, or in the CCW main lounge. The Wood were very kindly donated these colourful bedsocks, knitted by the Nellie Knitters Knitting Group. Have you noticed the wonderful mural that Victoria, one of our talented Wellness Partners is painting on the wall in the Kauri Lounge? An autumn tree full of New Zealand native birds. The Wood Garden It’s been a very busy and productive Winter in our garden, with some plants bursting into Spring growth already. The annual load of 10m³ of compost is now on all of the gardens, with a big helping hand from the rain to water it all in. All of the roses have been pruned and they are budding up and producing leaves already. Our Mandarins at the front entrance (Satsuma) have had a great crop this year, given that the trees are still very young. Our two-year-old Mandarin Burgess Scarlett in the CCW fountain courtyard area has fruited for the first time this year. Our Coffee trees (Coffea Arabica) continue to do well and have survived Winter so far. I just need to remember that they are sub-tropical plants and not to overwater them. I have planted more edibles, amongst the flowering shrubs. There are small groups of Blueberry Centurion and Blueberry Tifblue in the main garden and Strawberry Camarosa at the front entrance under the Mandarin trees. Blueberry Centurion has firm, dark blueberries and Blueberry Tifblue has light blue fruit. Both are rabbit eye varieties and do well when planted together. The Camellias, Rhododendrons, Pieris (Lily of the Valley) and Azaleas are bursting into flower now. Take a walk around the Village, there’s a great variety of colour including some beautiful dark coloured Rhodos and Camellias in the CCW gardens. The Spring bulbs have started flowering, with the lime green Gladioli first to flower, followed closely by the Daffodils. The Crocus’, Muscari, and Freesias are up and ready to flower and the Bluebells (Scilla) will flower last. We’re currently doing a trial with Neem granules under our Viburnum hedges. Neem granules are the residue left from the first extraction process, after the Neem seed kernels are crushed to extract oil. Neem granules are a natural insecticide and soil conditioner and we are using them to deter thrip infestations in our Viburnum hedges during Summer. Lastly and not least – our worm populations in the gardens have increased tenfold in the last year all around the Village. We now have a healthy number of soil worms and a range of different species, all working hard in all of our gardens. Enjoy! Louise the Gardener Page 7 August 2021 www.thewood.co.nz
