     SMP Holiday Celebrations
J umping into January after the holidays, the NYAC’s Saturday Morning Program at the City House continues to combine world class
coaching in a variety of sports with a focus on developing teamwork skills for children from ages six to 16. The SMP held its annual
holiday lunch in mid-December and is now focused on the New Year. However, echoes of the Weekend of Champions and the US
Olympic Committee’s social media truck back in November remain. An upcoming events calendar is below, but be sure to see additional

 NYAC Employee of the Year
hroughout each year, the Club’s senior management selects an Employee of the Month. As you may imagine, this is not an

T easy task given the number of NYAC employees - both at the City House and Travers Island - and the diversity of their
responsibilities. All the more difficult is the task of selecting the NYAC Employee of the Year. The announcement is traditional-
ly made at the annual staff Holiday Party, this year held on Tuesday, December 18th, and is always a source of enormous anticipa-
tion. After much deliberation, the 2018 NYAC Employee of the Year was announced as Carlos Rivera, a 20 year member of the
Club’s City House Lobby staff. Carlos started working as a bellman in September 1998 and is universally acknowledged as a popular,
gracious and diligent member of the NYAC team. Congratulations to Carlos and thanks for his many years of exemplary service. s

Held and Meili Strike Gold in China
he 2018 FINA Short Course World Championships held in Hangzhou,

T China from December 11th to 16th proved to be a

spectacular success for NYAC swimmers Katie

Meili and Ryan Held. The venue was the

Tennis Centre at the Hangzhou Olympic

& International Expo Center which boasted a brand

new Myrtha pool. With the pressure at peak intensity,

Meili and Held came away with gold medals that

were made all the sweeter by their American and

     world records.

Meili helped the United States secure a gold medal

and a new world record in the 4x50m medley relay,

tackling the breaststroke leg. The time of 1:42.38 blew

away the previous record, set by the United States in 2016.

Meili also walked away with a silver medal in the 100m breast-

stroke, recording a time of 1:03.63. She took two additional gold

medals as a member of the women’s 4×100m medley relay and

     mixed 4×50m medley relay.

Ryan Held also enjoyed a golden championship. A 2016 Rio Olympian,

Held was a part of six relay finals in Hangzhou, setting an American Record in a

prelim of the 4x100m freestyle relay. Over the course of the Championship, Held

claimed five medals: 4x100m freestyle relay (gold); mixed 4x50m freestyle relay (gold,

world record); 4x50m freestyle relay (gold); 4x50m medley relay (silver); 4x100m medley

relay (gold). He also secured a fourth place finish with the team in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Held’s finest accomplishment may have been his individual American record posted on the

opening leg in the morning prelim of the men’s 4x100 meter freestyle relay. Held clocked 45.82 seconds

on the opening segment to claim the American record. In the final that evening, teammate Caleb Dressel

handled lead-off duties and broke Held’s brand new mark with a time of 45.66. There was consolation for the

NYAC man, however, as the combination of he, Dressel, Michael Chadwick and Blake Pieroni was sufficiently

powerful to take the gold medal, setting a world record of 3:03.03. - Rachel Flinn
