Ruth Robinson of The Wheel Ewe, Lock Spinning Art Yarns. I totally love the curls of sheep’s wool. In this class, we will be looking at different ways of spinning up locks to keep the curls and to make beautiful use- able yarns. We will be trying different types of locks, fibres, lengths, crimp and spinning methods. After choosing your favourite method, the afternoon will be spent spinning, to practice the techniques learnt. There will be some knitting patterns and creations made with locks to inspire you in your creativity, and give you something to work towards.. Sue Macniven www.handspun-exotics.co.uk English Longdraw Sue uses a very traditional English Longdraw, paying particular atten- tion to the quality of fibre and its preparation, and the technical as- pects of twist development for different fibres and how to adjust the wheel for good control. Sampling for thickness and twist ratios to produce a light lofty yarn suitable for knitting. She will give you tips and tricks she uses to minimise lumps and unevenness so often seen in woollen spun yarn. We will go through which sheep fleeces are best for longdraw. Spend time learning how to use hand carders to make rolags from the washed fleece. Then to spin up your rolags along with commercial fibre, using this English Longdraw method.
Rachel Richardson From Scotland English Longwools The English Longwools are an amazing group of sheep, encompassing some of our very favourite breeds to some much less known. We will look at the differences in the lock characteristics of the members of this group and discuss possible uses. We will then work with a couple of these Longwools, preparing the locks and spinning the yarn. This will encompass combing and using a diz to make a hand pulled roving. I want to encourage the use of breed specific fibre. With the English Longwools we have an exceptional palette to pick from. Jennie Howes www.skybluepink-designs.com Supercoiled Yarns In this class we will start with spin- ning a core yarn which will be the foundation of our super coil; then spinning another yarn to wrap around it. The core will be an even textured yarn and a wild textured one spun for the wrap. With free spinning bobbins, lazy kates and feet treadling …. sounds like there’s a lot going on, but we will make steady progress, building on techniques as we go and before you know it you will be wearing a beautiful super coil necklace. Nicky Hossack Jewellery Studio No 5 Art Yarn Jewellery Ruth will be taking the first half of this class, where she will be showing a new technique to make metre long lengths of amazing chunky and subtle art yarns using fleece, combed tops, silks and wool locks. It is such a fun, quick and easy way to produce an amazing yarn. With that yarn, Nicky will demonstrate and help you to add the clasping's and beads, using her knowledge as a jewellery designer, to create beautiful bracelets and necklaces.
