THE RIPPLE Orewa Surf Life Saving Club Newsletter February 2019 Northern Region Junior Champs Orewa Juniors had a successful weekend at the Northern Region Junior Championships held at Omaha SLSC on the 2nd and 3rd of February. Overall 25 competitors from the B Group and 18 from the C Group raced hard on the beach and in the surf over two long days. Their efforts awarded the team a 3rd place finish in the Northern Region for the Cath & Eddie Millar Cup. Individually, the team had over 40 top-10 finishes and was awarded 22 medals. Many of these kids will now head to Oceans 2019 at Mount Maunganui to compete in the National Junior Championships. We wish them all good luck!
Survey Team at Orewa Beach SLSNR are currently supporting the development of a beach hazard predictive model for the Safeswim website. The project outputs include : A public facing rip current hazard index for Auckland region beaches (through the Safeswim website) Forecast tool for managers, Duty Officers and clubs to ensure effective resourcing of patrols A positive learning experience for lifeguards - the ‘science of waves and rips’ Potential for beach safety and rip awareness campaigns to be promoted at the launch and represented on the Safeswim platform The development of the model includes a fieldwork component which is being run by Coastal Marine Applied Research (Plymouth, UK), the University of Canterbury and SLSNR. The fieldwork ran between 28th Jan – 16th February 2019 and involved measuring nearshore currents on both the East and West coasts. The 2 locations decided upon by the team were Orewa and Muriwai, as these beaches best represent the majority of Safeswim sites on each respective coast. Survey team about to put out floating current measuring devices at Orewa. Sponsored by
Orewa SLSC supported Advanced Lifeguard Award by by Sam Reinen (photos courtesy of SLSNZ) In December, I was fortunate enough to be selected as one the 20 candidates from New Zealand, to attend the National Lifeguard School, achieving my Advanced Lifeguard Award. Strict criteria included that candidates must be: Over 17 years of age; Have at least 3 years life guarding experience; Have their IRB Drivers; Patrol Captains; First Aid level 1 & 2; Senior Lifeguard Award; C.I.M.S 2. Pre-course physical tests ensured we were able to swim 800m in under 14 minutes and run 3km in under 20 minutes. I was absolutely ecstatic to be selected! Before the course began, all candidates had to complete a workbook covering the topics we would look at on the course. These included spotting drowning; IRB operations; helicopter operations and first aid. Candidates were required to get 100% on this workbook. The course itself was an adrenaline filled rush from beginning to end. We received training aimed at driving in the surf; advanced first aid; search and rescue; leadership skills; inter-agency operations with Police; night operations and helicopter operations. Despite delays due to a mission, we were lucky enough to have the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter attend so that we could train setting up a landing site and jumping from the helicopter into the water. This was an absolute rush, definitely the highlight of the course.
The final day was test day and all the candidates had to complete a timed Orewa SLSC supported by 800m run swim run and a written test to complete the award. The course was challenging both physically and mentally, but 100% worth it. I met some amazing people, learnt an incredible amount and came out with an amazing life experience. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who can do it. You Travel Orewa Surfs Up fundraiser is on now.
