It will Feature Teacher By Marilyn Hein Students of Betty Piley describe her as “encouraging, friendly and al- ways having something good to say about their work, and offering uplift- ing critiques.” Betty has been teaching watercolor classes at the Hemet Art Association for some years now. She is an avid baker who loves to bake and bring treats to class for her student’s enjoyment! Lucky stu- dents! Born in Jefferson Texas, Betty moved with her family to National City in San Diego when she was 7 years old. She fondly remembers her mother encouraging her creativity with a paper bag and homemade art supplies. Betty was always sketching and came to the attention of the Lakeside Baptist Church for her artistic ability. She was asked to help with church bulletins, mu- rals, backdrops for plays and anything else artistic they needed. She also was in charge of Sunday school and children’s programs. As a self-taught artist, Betty did not formally take art lessons until she moved to Hemet and took classes from Jerry Regur. Betty made such an impression on Regur that she took Betty’s artwork to show at the Brandon Gallery in Fallbrook. Betty who was a stay at home mother raising her two children has taken adult education classes over the years in floral arrangement, cake decorating and tailoring. She has come to love watercol- or because of “the freshness of it.” After moving to Hemet, Betty decided to take some time for her- self and dedicate her time to her artwork. Betty and her husband lived on 5 acres in Homeland, which backed up to 400 acres of open land. After being widowed she moved into a smaller home with a very small yard. She misses the bobcats and coyotes that would frequent her property, but is enjoying having less yard to take care of. Betty feels she learns as much from her students as she teaches them and is just a step ahead of them in learning. She has taken classes from Robert Willis at Dorland Arts Colony and is inspired by Wins- low Homer for his shapes and values, John Senior Sargent for his use of light and Edgar Whitney for his composition. Betty shares her faith with her students and credits her artistic ability as a God given gift. Her stu- dents and members of the art association appreciate her encouragement and uplifting spirit. Betty demonstrates at Evening of Art and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Bettys work is excep- tional and her students benefit from her personality and talent. Thank you Betty for all you do for the Art Association!
