Grand Knight - Fred Anderson Dear Brother Knights, We are now entering our second year of lockdown. Let’s pray the vaccinations con- tinue and we can return to a new normal soon. I hope you and your families had a safe and meaningful Easter season. Call for ,ominations: April is normally the month we have nominations for next year’s executive. In the in- terest of retaining some normalcy, we are calling for nominations at our next meeting April 13. Please refer to pages 6 and 7 in this newsletter setting out the descriptions for each of the positions – thanks Ron for that. As I mentioned at our last meeting, over 30% of our current members are Life or Hon- orary Life members – which requires a member be over 70 years old. Almost all of our executive consists of this age group. To maintain the work and success of your Council, we need some younger members to step forward and to become more active. Please take some time and consider whether you can step up your involvement in our Council. Council news: At our last meeting we approved $2,000 for upgrades to the sound equipment used in the online streaming of mass and other functions at the church. This means that we have essentially funded the cost of the entire livestreaming equipment in use at Good Shepherd. Great work brothers! Scholarship applications are currently available either in this newsletter (pages 4 and 5) or from DGK Ron Barnhard. Stay safe and, if you are able, help those in need. Continue to pray for those who are sick and in harm’s way. "Vivat Jesus" Fred Anderson - GK Page 2
Deputy Grand Knight - Ron Barnhard Hello Brother Knights, Some activity has taken place in our council is spite of the COVID-19 restrictions: - Our Grand Knight was approached by the staff of our parish with a request to deliver the approximately 100 offertory envelope boxes that had not been picked up due to covid. We agreed to take on the project but when the time came to pick up the boxes there were close to 400. Luckily for me we had an excellent crew of members volunteer to help make the deliveries. I thank the following members who made this project an easy one: Vule Babic Piero Bachetti Ron Barnhard Rene Bedard John Chenier Frank Chelsea Jerry Deck Douglas Fuerth Robert T. Kane Paul Loebach Stan Lovecky Dan Marentette Jack Regnier Stan Rychel Don Seguin George Thakidiyil Mike Trepanier - Our Scholarship program can’t be stopped by Covid. We are starting to see applications coming in for this year. Please see applica- tion forms and instructions in this newsletter. - At this point we are considering carrying forward our current executive for another year since our current team really hasn’t had an opportunity to make much progress in advancing the principles and good works of our council. If, however you are interested in joining our executive team please let us know. You will find a list of responsibilities for each elected position in our council. We are encouraging new members on our executive team with new ideas to help advance the fine works that our council have been known for. Hoping to see you back at our masses in the near future. Ron Barnhard, Deputy Grand Knight Page 3
Duties of Our Elected Knights of Columbus Council Executive Officers The following is a description for each elected member of the executive officers of our Council: Grand Knight The grand knight is responsible for the welfare of the council. He presides over council meetings, acts as an ex-officio member of all committees, appoints a membership and programming director, convenes officers for a monthly meet- ing, and ensures all necessary reports are submitted to the state and Supreme Council. He should also be aware of the council’s financial status and ensure that his signature appears on all checks drawn. Deputy Grand Knight The deputy grand knight is second in command. He assists the grand knight with council affairs and fulfills all duties assigned to him by the grand knight. Should the grand knight be absent from a council meeting, the deputy grand knight will preside. He is chairman of the council’s retention committee Chancellor The chancellor has a variety of responsibilities. Primarily, he assists the grand knight and the deputy grand knight in the execution of their duties and oversees the council in both their absences. He is charged with strengthening the mem- bers’ interests in council activities. The chancellor is chairman of the admission committee Recorder The recorder is similar to a court reporter or a secretary. He is responsible for Page 6
maintaining a true record of all actions of the council and it’s correspondence. A Recorder’s Minute Book (#1403) is available from the Knights of Columbus Sup- ply Department for keeping a record of council meetings. Treasurer The treasurer is responsible for the safekeeping and maintaining records of all council funds and accounts. He is responsible for depositing money into the coun- cil’s accounts and provides a certificate of such monies to the grand knight. He is also responsible for payment of all expenses. Advocate The advocate is the legal representative of the council and serves as the council’s attorney at trials and investigations of any interest to the council. While he does not need to be a member of the legal profession, he should be familiar with the council by-laws, the Order’s Charter, Constitution and Laws (#30), Methods of Conducting a Council Meeting (#1937), and Robert’s Rules of Order. Warden The warden is the ‘watchdog’ for council property and degree paraphernalia, ex- cept the property of the financial secretary, treasurer and recorder. He is also re- sponsible for setting up the council chambers for meetings and ceremonial work. During ceremonial exemplifications, he will appoint and supervise guards. Inside & Outside Guards The guards have similar responsibilities, but distinct differences. The outside guard tends to the outer door admitting visitors and members to the inner door. Once at the inner door, the inside guard checks to make sure that their member- ship cards are current. Trustees The board of trustees consists of three members elected by the council and the grand knight, who serves as chairman of the board. They oversee the work of the financial secretary and treasurer, and with the deputy grand knight serve on the Page 7
