Alexander Zverev stuns Novak
Djokovic to win the 2018 ATP
Finals
There is no doubt that the trio ofRafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have ruled the tennis world for more than
a decade. Many have come and beaten these legends but few have survived and none have actually made their mark for
their name to be taken alongside these legends.

Maybe that’s destined to change. Germany’s Alexander Zverev stunned not just 20-time Grand Slam Champion Roger
Federer but also current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to win the year ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.

What do you think these three were chatting about…? #NittoATPFinals pic.twitter.com/qCsIMvp1Cj

Zverev first best Roger Federer in the semifinals and then went on to beat the Serbian Superstar Djokovic in straight sets to
capture his maiden ATP world tour Finals crown. With ought to doubt it’s the biggest win for Zverev’s career who has never
gone past the quarterfinals stage in any grand slam.

There was no doubting the fact that Zverev had talent but with 2 major back to back upsets, the 21 year old has signaled his
entry in the top flight of men’s tennis.

Today, Saturday September 8, 2018, is the Women’s Singles finals.

Who is playing? Serena Williams, USA vs. Naomi Osaka, Japan.

We know Serena – she is the powerhouse who has rocked Women’s tennis for a couple of decades now. Yes, we said
decades! She won her first Grand Slam title in 1999. It was the US Open. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles in her
career, and currently stands second to Margaret Court in terms of number of major wins. If she wins today, she will tie with
Margaret Court, and will seal her spot at the top of the charts.

36 year-old Serena is up against 20 year-old Naomi Osaka from Japan. This is Naomi’s first Grand Slam final, and this is part
of what the New York Times says she had to say about it: “Even when I was a little kid, I always dreamed that I would play
Serena in a final of a Grand Slam. Just the fact that it is happening, I’m very happy about it.”

The Men’s Singles Finals will be held tomorrow, Sunday, September 9, 2018.

Who is playing? Novak Djokovic, Serbia, vs. Juan Martin del Potro, Argentina.

What happened to Federer? The crushing heat at this year’s US Open was too much for him to handle and he lost to John
Millman. Where is Rafael Nadal? He suffered an injury and had to bow out of the tournament. Who will win tomorrow? Let’s
just wait and see!

Roger Federer: The Business of a
Brand
Roger Federer is a tennis legend and his on-court rivalry with Rafael Nadal has made watching tennis on
television supremely exciting! He is the most popular tennis player the world has ever seen and this great
fame has brought large endorsement opportunities.

What are endorsements? They are a form of advertising, usually made by famous people like sports or TV personalities,
who hold a certain level of trust and respect with the public. They lend their names to a product or brand they are
‘endorsing’ (saying it’s totally awesome!) in exchange for a sum of money. If Roger Federer uses a particular brand of gear,
then that must be the brand to have, right?!

Nike RF logo.

Federer and Nike: Federer endorsed Nike for 24 years. In exchange, he was paid $7.5 million annually. In 2010, Nike
created a personalised logo “RF”, which became world famous and earned both Nike and Federer a lot of money. Nike owns
the logo.

As a brand Nike made sense for Federer’s image when he was an upcoming star and in his prime.

Federer and Uniqlo: A few weeks ago, Federer left sports giant Nike, and cut a deal with a Japanese clothing brand called
Uniqlo. They are not as well known for their sportswear. They will pay him $30 million annually for the next ten years —
amounting to $300 million. Woah! That’s a lot of money! This is more than triple what he earned with Nike. The high
price tag has definitely grabbed the world’s attention and spurred some debate.

OK let’s put this in perspective: How much does Federer make by playing tennis? CNBC reports that he has made
$118 million in prize money in his career. They also say that he made $58 million in 2016 off-court – in appearances at

events, and endorsements, and such. That’s a lot of money that is made off-court, and that’s the strength of the brand that
he has built!

Why did he switch? In an interview with the Wall Street
Journal, Federer said: “What really resonated with me when
we were speaking to Uniqlo was that they respected me not
just as an athlete but also as a person with interests and
passions beyond the sport. I have to eventually think about
life after tennis and Uniqlo was a great match for that.”

So what’s the debate? For one, Uniqlo is not known as a sports brand, and two, it’s a pretty hefty sum to pay for a sports
personality who is fairly close to retirement. Federer is still winning grand slams and made quite the come back after his
back injury last year, when he beat Nadal at the 2017 Australian Open. It was truly a remarkable achievement and that too
at the age of 36, as the average age of retirement in tennis is 30. However he has now lost Wimbledon and the US Open. As
much as it breaks our hearts to say this, he is aging, and thus the debate.

What’s the value of a brand? Well, it’s what we perceive it to be. Federer stands for reliability, perfection, dedication,
good humour, effortless talent, determination, and he is just so very likeable! Let’s see what he is able to do for Uniqlo.

Ownership: Nike however, still owns the rights to the “RF” logo, which Federer hopes he can get back by working out a deal
with them. There has been no comment from Nike about the matter. Federer made his Uniqlo debut at Wimbledon 2018 in
July. What did he wear? Uniqlo clothing, however since the Japanese brand does not make shoes, he wore his personalized
Nike shoes with the “RF” brand. How will they work it out? We will just have to wait and see.

The US Open Tennis Tournament
2018
Women’s Singles: 6-time US Open Champion, Serena Williams is once again the favourite to win the last Grand Slam of
the year. Serena who turns 37 soon, missed last year’s tournament due to injury. She is seeded 17th in the list which is
headed by Simona Halep. Halep is the top seed after she won the French Open earlier this year and will also be a strong
contender for the title. Local favourite & Defending Champion Sloane Stephens along with Former World No. 1 Caroline
Wozniacki are also the big names in the seeding list.

In the Men’s Singles category, Rafael Nadal is the Number 1 seed ahead of 5-time US Open Champion Roger Federer. The
3rd seed is awarded to 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro the rising star of Men’s tennis Alexander Zverev is seeded
4th.

Rafa, the winner of 17 Grand Slam titles, is the top seed but there is no clear favourite in the men’s draw. The ‘BIG THREE’
of the men’s tennis – Nadal, Federer & Djokovic are all in contention to win at Flushing Meadows. Interestingly, the three
have a total of 50 Grand Slam Singles Titles in between them. While Nadal recently won the Roger’s Cup in Toronto, Federer
& Djokovic are also in fine form and it’s tough to pick a favourite. One can never rule out the ‘DJOKER’. The Serbian
Superstar Novak Djokovic won the Wimbledon this year and also captured the ATP 10000 title in Cincinnati ahead of the final
Grand Slam of the year.

The possibility of a Federer vs Nadal final is alive as the top 2 seeds will be looking to avoid any hiccups till the last round.
Interestingly, in the last 5 meetings between the two legends, Federer has prevailed on every occasion since 2014.

What a weekend this has been for sports enthusiasts around the world. Saturday saw Angelique Kerber beat Serena Williams
to bag her first Wimbledon title, 6-3, 6-3. Sunday saw Novak Djokovic beat Kevin Anderson to win his 13th Grand Slam title
and 4th Wimbledon title. And then there’s football! The World Cup is over and there’s a new World Champion in France!

Let’s talk about the tennis:

Women’s Singles Finals: The crowd was rooting for Serena Williams as this was her first big tournament since she had her
baby 10 months ago. Alas, it was not her day, and Angelique Kerber played amazingly well and won in 2 straight sets, 6-3,
6-3. This is now the first time that a German has won the Women’s Singles title since Steffi Graf won last in 1996!

What was Djokovic so excited about? He was delighted that his little 3 year old son Stefan was allowed to come in and
watch him get his trophy. He said this is the first major tournament that he has played where he had a special fan yelling
‘Daddy, daddy!’ out to him!

Every coach says, “Play to your strengths.” That’s exactly what Rafael Nadal is doing. The Spanish superstar loves the clay
court and he made a wise decision by missing a few masters tournaments to get ready for the clay season. The clay season
started with a bang as Rafa captured 3 titles in 4 outings in Europe. The stage was set and it was only Rafa or his injuries
which could stop the world number 1 from winning his 11th French Open title. He only dropped 1 set en route to the final
where he was up against the “Prince of Clay” Dominic Thiem. The Austrian was the only one who had beaten Rafa on clay
this year but no one was ready to bet against the Spaniard. A straight sets win for Rafael Nadal in the final at Paris got him
to title number 16 and is still 4 Slams behind Roger Federer. Just like Federer, Rafa had cracked the code. Playing selective
tennis and choosing tournaments wisely was the key to his success.

Dominic Thiem came in with a plan.

Rafael Nadal had one of his own.

Just like Federer, Nadal has won it all but the only thing that possibly keeps the 32-year-old going is his determination to go
past Fedex when it comes to the number of Grand Slam titles. He is 4 years younger than Federer and has just 3 Grand
Slams less than the Swiss-Maestro. But with the way things are going for both Nadal and Federer, tennis fans like you and
me are assured of some old-school rivalry for a few more years.
