VOL 1.9 MARCH 2020 Altarian the monthly newsletter of Altrincham Rotary President’s Letter Dear friends, Rotarians what an amazing month we have just experienced! First of all, this is an important date for us, February 23, 1905, Rotary Founder Paul Harris formed one of the world’s first service organisations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could contents exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships, since then, Rotary has continued its commitment to service by providing clean water, improving maternal health, awarding scholarships, fighting diseases, and 1- President’s letter improving lives around the world, as we do here at Altrincham Rotary! Great to see such a good turn out last night, thanks to Sudershan for arranging yet again an excellent speaker, Stephen Ablett who spoke to us about, “You won’t believe your eyes”. Furthermore, thanks to Robert for organising the Rotary Scholars Dinner which 2 - Club diary was very much enjoyed by all. Good to see so much support from Rotarians and friends from across our district including Cheadle, our District Governor Patrick Tyrrell and Saddleworth our District 1285 Rotary Foundation Committee Chairman Stan Bowes and their partners. Golborne & Lightshaw, Manchester 3 - Scholars Dinner Breakfast, Runcorn, Tameside & Ramsbottom some of which even brought their partners. Three of our own Honorary Members, June Bates, Margaret Curry and Rosemary Mincher. Some of our own members’ partners, Stephanie Besbrode, Trish Patrick and Caroline Strachan. Last but not least our Rotary Foundation Scholars, Mona Tamaru from Japan 4 - Health and Maddy Scholar from USA whom spoke about themselves, how they came to be studying in Manchester, their opinions of Manchester and the UK and of course what their aspirations are for the future. Thanks to all our own members for making all our guests feel so comfortable 5 - Charter news and making it such an enjoyable evening. Thank you Neil for a fun quiz night which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, including myself who somehow ended up with the lowest score! I think perhaps it might have been due to lack of experience, or was it somewhat challenging perhaps due to most of the question being before my time... I’m ready for the next one, bring it on! Happy Birthday Rotary! Here is to another 110 years of helping and sharing in fellowship! Jag 1

THE Inner Wheel Club of Altrincham has been supporting a little known charity SANDS (Stillbirth And Neonatal Death Support) by knitting baby blankets for bereaved parents and families who lose a child at birth Scholars’ Dinner Altrincham club hosted many visitors from our district to meet with two students on Rotary Mona is from Japan and is studying architecture. We were enthralled to hear her views on various structures and her plans for the future Maddy is from the wide open spaces in Georgia and comes from a family with great outdoor interests. She is interested in conflict resolution and this is the subject of her studies in the UK. We were all very impressed with both young ladies and their confidence to explain their background, home life and interests leading to their courses at university. These students were a great example of the educational benefit supported by international Rotary and the potential benefit to the world at large 3
•Wash your hands often with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. This is particularly important after taking public transport. • • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • If you feel unwell, stay at home, do not attend work or school. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin and wash hands with soap and water. • if you cannot reach your tissues cough or sneeze into your bent elbow • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home and work environment. • Use of facemasks is generally not recommended outside clinical settings. Should you decide to use a mask (or it is a requirement at your destination), you should ensure you continue to use all the recommended precautions in order to minimise the risk of transmission. • If you wear a facemask it may become damp on the outside from condensing breath. This wetness can carry infection so do not touch the outside of the mask unless you wash your hands well afterwards • When travelling away from your house, wearing disposable gloves can prevent you picking up infection from door handles, handrails and supermarket trolleys. If you are fit and well, with no symptoms, there is no evidence that wearing face masks as a general prevention measure is helpful. Public Health England advises against using masks outside clinical settings. If you decide to use a mask, remember to you should still follow all the • Check up to date travel health recommendations on information pages, and if you require further advice, speak to your GP, practice nurse, pharmacist or travel clinic. • If you are elderly or have pre-existing health issues, you should be aware that if you are infected with COVID-19 you could be at increased risk of severe infection. • Be aware of, and keep up to date with the latest official advice offered by the country you are departing from or travelling to during this COVID-19 outbreak. • If you are travelling from the UK, check the up to date guidance from gov.uk website and for information on any travel restrictions, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) foreign travel advice; (see the summary, health and entry requirements sections). You can also find general travel health advice for each destination on our Country Information pages. • Check the impact this outbreak may have on your travel insurance coverage, including medical repatriation costs in case of ill health or any new restrictions on travel.
