Your first weeks in Germany Creating trust - building relationships Role of the guest mother perceive/accept habits learn the language quickly (Rosetta Stone) talk to guest parents in case of start-up difficulties
In the host family: suggestions: • Live in and with your host family - then you will feel good faster • don't encapsulate - don't be too reserved (Computer, facebook, contact to home) • be active, be interested in the activities of the family • try new food and give your opinion, criticism about it needs to be well considered • get yourself into the family: Offer help • keep rooms clean, possibly wash your own clothes • discuss health problems with host mother • Family dispute - do not take sides under any circumstances • be tolerant of other views, accept other behaviors • no jealousy of host siblings • Change in up to 3 - 4 host families during the year is normal
Dealing with people and culture • adapt to habits • Pay attention to sensitivities regarding flags • Avoid criticism: host country, the people, the schools, the politics of the host country • I will not show contempt. Your host country is unusual, foreign, different • Beware of foreign food/beverages • be nice to people you don't like, too. • Perceive cultural differences, pay attention to them and treat them respectfully
Rotary in host country • Contact the counselor • Participation in meetings (club activities, district conferences, orientations, etc.) • Clothing for official occasions: Rotary blazer, no T-shirt, no sneakers • Club Presentations: Asking Expectations • Immediately notify address changes such as changes to mobile phone number or e-mail address without being requested to do so • Counselor always needs to know where you are. • Maintaining My Account in the Applicant Database • quarterly reports (reporting obligation) to Kay Timm on time! Reports will be treated confidentially!
New friends and contacts • do not encapsulate - do not be too reserved • quickly find new friends • sports club, music groups • not only keep in contact with other exchange students • not only friends of the same age / older friends • introduce, give business cards, reverse host address, phone number • no contacts to people who are rejected by your host parents • speaking at school and other organizations
Behaviour • feel not only enthusiasm - show them • be untiring • try to be balanced • Dealing with homesickness (contacts, distraction) • tell the truth - even if it's hard. Rotary Travel Rules • I sent them via e-mail: – To you – To your Host-Families – To your counsellor – To your YEO • 3 Kategorien / 3 categories: – Erlaubte Fahrten / permitted journeys – Fahrten, für die Du eine Erlaubnis erbitten kannst / journeys you may get an approval for – Verbotene Fahrten / prohibited journeys
Erlaubte Reisen / permitted journeys: • In Begleitung eines • Accompanied Mitglieds von Rotary by a Rotarian, • Mit Rotex • with Rotex, • Mit der Schule • with school, • Mit Verein, Kirche o.ä. • with a Club /church or alike, • Tagesreisen ohne • one-day-journeys without Übernachtung, nach an overnight-stay after Absprache mit Gasteltern, having consulted your die ggf. abholen müssen hostparents (that have to innerhalb des Distrikts pick you up at any place 1800 within the District 1800 in case of an emergency)
