about your hsa How a Health Savings Account works This plan is called a Health Savings Account (HSA) because you set up a special tax-free bank account, in your name, to pay your medical out-of-pocket expenses. You will receive a debit card, so when you need to pay a doctor’s bill, a prescription, or other covered expense, you will pay with your HSA card. Tax Savings • All contributions are tax-free. • You may contribute via payroll deduction, to a total limit of $3,550 for Single and $7,100 for Family. (Age 55+: extra $1,000 catch-up.) • Your payroll deduction contributions avoid Federal, State and FICA taxes. • Contributions made outside payroll don’t avoid FICA taxes. • Contribution dollars that you don’t spend during the year still avoid taxes. Rules • Your balance rolls over year to year so you can never lose your money. • You do not have commit to a certain dollar amount before the year begins. • You may start, stop or change contributions during the year, per your needs. • You may use your HSA dollars to pay dental and vision copays. • You may use your HSA dollars to pay dependent medical expenses. • You may not have an HSA if you are also covered by another health plan. 10
about your hsa Did you know? • Wilo USA deposits half their contribution in January and half in July. • You may also contribute your own dollars, tax-free, via payroll deduction. • All your unused money rolls over to the next year. • You receive a debit card. When you need to pay a doctor’s bill, a prescription or a hospital, pay with your HSA card, because… • If you pay a $100 medical bill using your HSA card, it’s like paying $70 because of the tax savings. • An HSA often beats a co-pay plan. For example, if you had surgery and owed $2,000, when you pay with your HSA card will save about $600 to $700 in taxes. • Would you like to pre-fund more of your deductible? Set up a tax-free payroll deduction into your HSA, up to the legal limits. IRS Rules for persons age 65 or older regarding HSA plans 1. To receive or make tax-free HSA contributions after age 65, you may not be enrolled in Medicare Part A, B, C, or D. 2. If you delay drawing Social Security until after your normal retirement age and you have been on an HSA plan, you should not accept a lump sum offer from Social Security. 3. If you are concerned about these IRS rules, you may: • forgo the HSA contribution • select the Copay Plan • go on Medicare and select a Medicare supplement and Part D drug card. Text us at 229-448-4777 and we will send you the details. 11
