Valentine’s Day Parties With Valentine's Day approaching, we would like to share a few friendly reminders. If you have signed up to assist with the party, your child’s teacher will add your name to the Valentine Volunteer List available to all front office staff. When you arrive, will need to sign-in at the front office, receive your volunteer sticker and head to the classroom at 2:20 p.m. to help with the set-up. The party will begin at 2:30. Our volunteers are organizing wonderful activities along with special treats that comply with the wellness policy for our students. We kindly ask that students do not share food with one another at school. Candy attached to Valentine cards is fine, but these treats will need to be enjoyed at home. If a MHS volunteer has a student at Brady, he/she is permitted to join the parent volunteer in the assigned classroom only. Brady students will not be permitted to bring friends over to Moreland and must have a note to leave Brady to join Moreland. Upon arrival, Brady students will need to check in the front office, and must stay in the assigned classroom with his/her parent for the duration of the party. Brady students can plan to visit former teachers after dismissal only. _____________________________________________________________________________ School Dismissal Manager We greatly appreciate your effort and support for our implementation of the School Dismissal Manager program! School Health The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that children brush their teeth at least twice a day for two minutes with a soft bristled toothbrush to avoid tooth decay, also called cavities. Tooth decay is caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in the mouth, frequent snacking on foods with minimal nutritional value, sipping on sugary drinks, and not brushing teeth well. To reduce your child’s risk of tooth decay: ● Avoid excessive amounts of sugary foods and drinks. ● Limit between-meal snacks. If a snack is needed, offer nutritious foods. ● If your child chews gum, make it sugarless. ● Monitor beverage consumption and make healthy beverage choices such as water or milk. ● Schedule regular dental visits. Help your child develop good healthy brushing and flossing habits. Visit the ADA website for fun ways to encourage your child to brush their teeth. www.mouthhealthy.org/en/babies-and-kids/fun-ways-to-encourage-kids-to-brush _____________________________________________________________________________ Technology What is TikTok? TikTok is a social media app that gives users the opportunity to share up to 60 second videos with friends, family or the entire world. Currently, the app is available in 75 languages with 1 billion active users (December 2019). Like Musical.ly before it, it is most popular with children under 16. It has also now become the most downloaded app of 2019. What should parents be concerned about? When you download the app users can see all the content without creating an account. However, they are not able to post, like or share anything until they’ve set up an account on the app. You can set up an account using an existing Google, Facebook, Instagram account, via email or phone. By default all accounts are public so anyone on the app can see what your child shares. However, only approved followers can send them messages. Users can like or react to a video, follow an account or send messages to each other. There is the risk that strangers will be able to directly contact children on the app. Children may be tempted to take risks to get more of a following or likes on a video so it’s important to talk about what they share and with who. To delete an account you have to request a code from the app using a phone number. What age is appropriate? All major social networking sites, including TikTok, require that a user be at least 13 years of age in order to create an account. Children under the age of 13 should not have social networking accounts. Source: https://www.internetmatters.org/hub/esafety-news/tik-tok-app-safety-what-parents-need-to-know/

Participation is limited, so don't delay. SENG stands for Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (https://www.sengifted.org). SENG is a nonprofit organization that empowers families and communities to guide gifted and talented individuals to reach their goals: intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Orange City Schools will offer five free SENG Model Parent Groups (SMPGs) this spring for Orange City School parents interested in this opportunity. Each SMPG will bring together small groups of parents for (8) weekly meetings in which parents of gifted and talented children can receive support, guidance, and professional resources. Parents can connect with other parents and discuss topics such as motivation, discipline, stress management, and peer relationships. The trained SMPG co-facilitators do not attempt to give expert advice. Instead, their facilitation provides a non-judgmental and nurturing atmosphere. Additionally, the other participating parents are themselves a rich resource of information. Share your successes and concerns, joys and challenges of parenting your gifted child in a safe environment! (Please note: This is an adult group. Children should not attend. Childcare will not be provided.) Groups will meet weekly for eight sessions, and are structured around A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children, by James T. Webb, Janet L. Gore, Edward Amend, and Arlene DeVries (one book per family will be provided). Groups will need to have a minimum of six parents, and a maximum of ten parents. (Two parents/significant adults can attend each session per child or can alternate attendance. A significant adult includes, but is not limited to a stepparent, guardian, grandparent living in the home of the child, etc.) You will receive an email the week before the first session indicating when and where you can pick up your book, the first reading assignment, location of your sessions, and other important information from your facilitators. All meetings will take place on the Orange City Schools campus. Light refreshments will be provided at each meeting. Participation is on a first come, first serve basis. By signing up, you are committing to attending all eight meetings. Please do not sign-up if you are not able to attend the meetings, as your spot will no longer be available to someone else who may be able to attend. Future opportunities to participate in SENG Model Parent Groups will be offered through Orange Recreational Center (fees will apply). REGISTER WITH THIS LINK. (CLOSES FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2020)
