Thank you for all your kind generosity and gifts at the end of last term. Since writing this newsletter, following recent government announcements, school is now closed to all children except those who are vulnerable or who have critical worker parents/carers. Home learning is being provided via Tapestry/Seesaw for all children at home. STAFF NEWS We said our fond farewells to Mr Graham Hayden at the end of term, as he embarks on his retirement after 13 tireless years of work as our school caretaker at Pound Pill. We are therefore delighted to welcome Mr Chris Morris to the team as our new caretaker. Chris is looking forward to getting to know the team and utilising his trusty tool kit on all of the jobs around the school. Additionally we are pleased to welcome Mr Richard Davies to the school as our new Facilities Manager. Rich is a former parent and governor of Corsham Primary, who will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and health and safety of the school buildings. We hope both Rich and Chris will be very happy with us. We have said goodbye to Mrs Lisa Griffin who joined us as a TA for a brief time in the Foundation Stage. She is off to pastures new and we send our very best wishes.
What is Enquiry Led Learning? In a nutshell, enquiry-led learning provides learners with key questions that are too big to answer in one go, but not so conceptually large that they do not understand. The purpose is to guide pupils to answer these questions in a scaffolded process, allowing them to ‘know more’ and ‘remember more’ about their learning along the way. We use 4 types of enquiry questions across the school; ‘what’, ‘how’, ‘why’ and ‘if’, starting with ‘what’ questions in FS2 and KS1 and moving towards ‘if’ questions in year 6. Below is a mini enquiry, taken from our A-Z of Curiosity, that you could try at home for fun.
Ivern’s Reading Page At Corsham Primary we recognise the importance of encouraging children to read widely, both at school and at home. With this in mind, we are keen to celebrate children for any reading, not just for reading books issued at school to an adult. Therefore, any evidence of 10 minutes daily reading can be celebrated/ recorded within the home school reading diaries. This could include: • Reading any book (fiction or non fiction) from home • Reading magazines, comics, newspapers etc • Reading independently to themselves • Having a conversation with an adult about a book they are reading • Listening to a story as it is read to them by a parent/carer • Reading out loud to a sibling or even to a teddy • Reading an ebook • Listening to an audiobook Did you know that ‘Audible’ are currently allowing children to stream a collection of stories for free on desktops, laptops, tablets aor phones. YEAR 6 JANUARY NEWSLETTER—BY 6B Dromaeosauridae- facts about this group of dinosaurs By Edward W The Dromaeosaridae was a very interesting group as there has been many adaptations to how these “raptors”would look. They were bidepal bird- hipped carnivorous theropods that flourished mainly in the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic. • These were most likely feathered. Including the legendary velociraptor from Jurassic park in its ranks surprisingly the creatures from Jurassic park were highly inaccurate. They were much smaller in real life and highly feathered. In conclusion the creatures were much more like not-feathered deinonychus another type of dromaeosaur. • A lot of dromaeosaurs had huge sickle shaped claws on there feet to rip open flesh, sharp teeth, and forward facing eyes suggesting binocular vision. • Dromaeosaurs had a wide range of sizes ranging from 0.7 metres to 6 metre. Some of the biggest include Dakotaraptor Utahraptor and achillabator. • Dromaeosaurs seem to have maybe been able to glide. These creatures being, rahovanis, microraptor, chagyuraptor, deinonychus and zhenyuanglong. • The sinornithosaurus was found with traces of feather and it makes it one of the most important specimens found because it supports the idea of dinosaurs covered in feathers. Phobias and Fears By Theo S Hi, I’m Theo and I’d like to talk to you about the many unique phobias. A phobia is a strong and irrational fear of something. Pyrophobia is a fear of fire. Out of 356 people, only around 2 people would have this fear. It is thought that 1 in 7 people have an irrational fear of something; small spaces (claustrophobia), heights, reptiles or even long words! Moving on, we have Megalophobia, meaning a fear of big things. Fun fact: I am terrified of being near tall buildings! Out of 980 people, around 4 might have this fear. An- other interesting fear is Xenophobia. This is the fear of unknown things.
