8 February 2019 KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL Newsletter Dear Parents It has been wonderful to enjoy the celebrations of the 10th Anniversary of our Nursery this week. As I said last week, our Year 7 and Year 8 boys who were in the first cohort have given assemblies where they shared their memories and on Wednesday morning these boys went across to the Nursery to join the current Butterflies for some activities. They did a singing session and then all enjoyed a birthday tea. Later on in the evening we had an event with former and current governors and staff, parents from the first ever cohort and some local supporters. It was lovely at this event to reflect on the success of the Nursery over its ten years. Last year’s Year 8, as you may remember, were extremely successful in gaining awards in a range of disciplines so I am delighted to be able to let you know that Miles has been awarded a Drama Scholarship by Brighton College. Those who have seen Miles’s performances in plays will not be surprised – well done Miles. On Wednesday afternoon, the SD Dining Hall was transformed into the Great Hall at Hogwarts for our Harry Potter evening. The Year 4 and 5 boys who took part in the event really got into it – and with help from some older boys too – completed quizzes and activities. They were also on the hunt for an escaped wizard who bore a striking resemblance to the Headmaster of King's House School! Many thanks to Mrs Wilkins, our librarian, who organised this event. Future Schools Evening – thank you to all who attended this on Monday evening. There is a copy of the slides available if you missed it. Also, please do let us have any feedback on the event. A reminder that today is a Mufti Day and that there is no school next Friday 15 February – as it is a staff training day. Mark Turner Egyptian death masks title page By Alistair - 5S Page 1

Henry brought in some special gifts for all of his friends in Caterpillar Class, red envelopes filled with chocolate coins. Thank you Henry! We were thrilled to welcome back the current Year 7 and our 8 boys who attended Nursery for our 10th Birthday Party on Wednesday. The boys joined our Butterfly Class for a music and movement lesson with Mrs Murray and Birthday Teddies it was lovely to see our youngest and oldest children in the school, singing and dancing together. Then they the all sat down for party food and of course a slice of birthday cake. A huge thank you to Mrs Smart for the incredible birthday cake, which was almost too beautiful to cut! The children then when home with party bags filled with a little teddy, wearing a smock! The celebrations continued into the evening with friends, parents and governors who were there at the very beginning. Where did those ten years go? Goodie Bag Jane O’Brien Page 2
King’s House School Newsletter 8 February 2019 Notes from the Junior Department Dear Parents It has been a super week with visiting speakers, school trips and a regulatory compliance inspection thrown in for good measure! We started on Monday with Mrs McCormick and Mrs Vasquez, who came in to talk to the boys about the recent ‘Tough Guy’ challenge they completed. This was an eight mile course through mud and over all sorts of ridiculously challenging obstacles. Using the PLAN approach they taught the boys about the importance of careful Preparation, Listening to advice, taking Action and Never giving up. Our school inspection kicked off on Wednesday with an observation of Mr Green’s singing assembly, which literally raised the roof! The boys threw themselves into the songs, showing what enjoyment and pleasure they derive from being part of the school community. Then Year 2 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith. They participated in three different workshops: drama, dance and crafts all based on their topic of Knights and Castles. In the drama session they took on the role of Knights of Hammersmith and Pimlico and used their best acting to convince the Queen of their values and worth. In the dance session they were taught how to use movement in a battle set up – there was climbing, diving, jousting and they even created drawbridges through movement. Finally in the arts and crafts session they made creative shields which had their own herald symbols to represent the Knight’s different personalities. Chinese New Year has been high on the agenda and the Reception boys were lucky enough to have Dylan's mummy come in and share her traditional stories, Chinese writing, popular foods and how to say ‘Happy New Year’ in Chinese! In Year 1, Ethan’s daddy told them about the legend of Nian – a monster who was scared away by loud noises and the colour red and why these are significant to how Chinese New Year is celebrated today. Tim’s Mummy also came in to share some pictures and gave out some beautiful lanterns. 1B performed an amazing assembly about Apollo 11. They have been learning about space and retold the story of Buzz Aldrin and Louis Armstrong's journey to the moon in 1969. The boys also reflected on how they would feel about going to the moon. Well done 1B - a truly entertaining assembly! Simon Gower House Points: 1st Nelson 251, 2nd Raleigh 246, 3rd Drake 236, 4th Churchill 231 Page 3

King’s House School Newsletter 8 February 2019 Sport News Fixture Addition U11ABCD will play Danes Hill on Tuesday 12 February at KHSG, kick off at 2.45pm The U13A B and C teams all had a tough set of fixtures against Shrewsbury House on Monday. The boys battled hard, especially the A and B teams who fought back from slow starts in their games to put in much better performances in the second half. Yesterday then saw all the U13 teams play again against Rokeby. The A team played some exciting rugby to run in 7 tries, the B team again fought back well in the second half of their game and the C team ran in 11 tries in their match! The U12s also had fixtures against Shrewsbury House and Rokeby this week. On both days only 2 sides played. Against Shrewsbury House the A and B teams put in their best performances of the season to run in 12 tries between them. Yesterday’s Rokeby fixtures saw the A team run in 4 tries, whilst the C team fought well to get themselves over the line a few times against Rokeby’s B team. Finally, the U11s played a triangular fixture on Tuesday against Cranmore and KCJS. With 16 boys missing from the year group for interviews, a makeshift set of teams took to the field and performed superbly. The boys learnt with every half of rugby played and put in improved performances as the afternoon went on. King’s King’sHouse HouseSchool SchoolNewsletter Newsletter 25 May 2018 8 February 2019 Year 6 Trip to Hindu Neasden Temple On Tuesday 5 February, Year 6 visited the Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Neasden. We arrived at the temple around 10.30 and were amazed at the external beauty of the intricately carved building. Once inside, we met our hosts and were invited to watch a short film about the origins of the temple. We then visited the main prayer hall and walked around the beautiful gilt statues and high, vaulted ceilings. Many of the gods and rituals that we have learnt about in class were evident and the temple was busy with worshippers. Shortly afterwards, the boys were able to explore the origins of the Hindu faith, in a fascinating exhibition on the ground floor of the temple. The religion’s contribution to science, medicine and meditation was exhibited through pictures, statues and film. Finally, the most exciting part of the visit was an invitation for us to join the daily ceremony, conducted by the temple’s priests. With music, chanting and prayer, we were transported into the heart of the Hindu faith and it was a truly memorable experience for the boys. A huge thank you to the accompanying staff, who gave their valuable time, during a very busy week at King’s House. Thank you to: Mr Cheetham, Mr Brett, Miss McKoy and Miss Bell. Miss K Walters.
