     THE MONKSTOWN EAGLE
Sean Desmond - King of the South

Monkstown’s Sean Desmond had an outstanding victory in capturing
the South of Ireland Championship at Lahinch on Sunday 28 July. For
a full report read Brian Keogh in the Irish Times. The South of Ireland
Championship along with the East, West and North of Ireland Cham-
pionships are the four majors that every amateur golfer strives to win.
Achieving such a win is very rare and Monkstown has to go back to
1962 when the great Tom Egan won the East of Ireland when he
spreadeagled the field in the third round with eight birdies in a row
from hole 2 to 9. Tom Egan was runner up in the South in 1951.
Paddy O’Sullivan who joined Monkstown 1960 won the South in that
same year but had declared for Kinsale prior to the championship.
Sean now joins an illustrious group of golfers who have won this
wonderful championship; John Burke (11 victories from 1928 to
   1946); Joe Carr (1948, 1966, 1969); John McHenry (1986); Darren
Clarke (1990); Paul McGinley (1991); David Higgins (1994); Graeme
McDowell (2000); James Sugrue (2017). Padraig Harrington was
runner up in 1994 and 1995. Our own Cian McNamara won in 2004.
The South is Sean’s second great win this year as in June last he cap-
tured the Munster Students Trophy at Tipperary - seen above with
Jim Long Chairman Munster Golf. All at Monkstown are delighted for
Sean and wish him con]nued success as he sets out on his golfing
   career.

The cup arrives in Monkstown 30 July

The 180 hole challenge.
Our manager Brian and professional Cian accom-
plished an extraordinary feat on Saturday 13 July
when they played 180 holes of golf to raise funds
for our teams. Guided by the torch light from
John Murphy’s mobile phone they hit the first ball
at 4.30 am and walked! off the 180th green at 9.30
pm. Much has been wrieen about this test of
endurance – see comprehensive report in Cork
Golf News but the following sta]s]cs also should
be noted.

1. Length traversed: 46.45 miles
2. 17 hours dura]on
3. Cian hit the ball 738 ]mes
4. Brian hit the ball 782 ]mes
Cian to Brian: “Please Brian - no more bright ideas”
5. They drank c.30 litres of water laced with salt
tables - thank you Dr Richardson for the advice.
6. And amazingly only ate:
    10 apples.
    4 hard boiled eggs
    4 sandwiches
    2 mars bars

Course Officer Update (Q3 2019)
The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in Monkstown.
Aside from the recent President’s Meitheal a number of
members have once again taken it upon themselves to do
some clean up around the course. Thanks to Jonathan Bar-
riscale, Mark O’Sullivan and Mick McGuire for their work
behind the 16th tee and the surrounding areas. I’d also like
to thank Peter Carr, Joe Murphy and Ken Healy for cleaning
the old Parkgariff Estate
entrance gate behind
the blue tee on the 1st.

As many of you will
know Parkgariff Estate
was the family resi-
dence of Charles Lynch,
one of Ireland’s leading
concert pianists over
many decades.

The original residence on the estate (which was located in
the vicinity of the current clubhouse) burnt down in 1956,
an event witnessed by some of our current members.
Charles Lynch himself died in somewhat ‘reduced’ circum-
stances in 1984 and is buried in Musician’s Corner in Saint
Finbarr’s Cemetery beside Aloys Fleischman and Joan
Denise Moriarty. If you want to know more about the histo-
ry of the course and the Club (and the ghosts) I can’t rec-
ommend highly enough the book by Alicia St. Leger
Monkstown Golf Club - A Centenary History 1908 to 2008.

History aside, you may have noted the recent rolled out
Adopt-A-Green ini]a]ve. We have terrific greens in
Monkstown and we’d like to keep them that way. The ini]a-
]ve is that every member is assigned a par]cular green
based on the first ini]al of their surname and we’d encour-
age everyone to make an extra effort in rela]on to repairing
pitch marks on their assigned green. (FC)
