Player Pathway Guidance for the Senior Academy Programme 2014/15 Season The Women’s Senior Academy Programme, which was introduced last year, will be starting again in October 2014. The programme is aimed at ambitious players who have the drive and commitment to be the best they can be. The major focus of the programme is on individual skill development and will allow talented players the opportunity to be part of a high intensity training and competition programme The programme consists of five training weekends along with three matches and summer camps for selected players. Running alongside the camps and matches will be a series of master classes that will have a National skill focus and all players within the academy programme will receive support and education in Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition and Lifestyle Management. There will be four senior academies running throughout the country based in the London, North, Midlands and the South West and the programmes will all be 12 months in length. Overall Vision of Academy Rugby To provide a challenging, high quality, performance environment within each Academy which enables effective individual player development and provides players who have potential, ambition and commitment to become the best they can be. Nomination of Players for the Senior Academy Programme This programme is a very important part of the RFU Women and Girls player pathway and the club and university coaches play a lead role in the nomination process. Potential academy players should be assessed during training and in matches and the nominations should be based around the core skill areas as identified on the next page. Whilst we are not expecting players nominated to be fully developed in all of the stated areas these guidelines should form the basis for your nominations. Players who have been involved and performed well in the Senior CB programme can of course be nominated for academy trials and CB coaches should liaise with club and university coaches to pass these player details on and to request any additional nominations should they have not already been made by the club or university. There is no limit on the number of players that can be nominated for the academy trials. However, coaches need to be objective in their nominations and must have a clear rationale and reasoning behind the players selected for the trials. The Divisional Talent Development Officers (DTDOs) are available as support in this process but the club and university coaches are expected to carry out the assessment and nomination process and forward it to the Event Support Officer (ESO) by Monday 8th September 2014. A standardised Nomination Form is attached for coaches, and once completed should be returned to Susan Murrin, who is the RFU Event Support Officer for Women’s Performance, at SusanMurrin@rfu.com. Should there be any new players who coaches feel are to the standard of an academy trial and they have not been nominated already then these players should be immediately highlighted to the appropriate DTDO and then they can be added to any potential trials list for September. All players that want to trial for an Academy must be involved in Club, College or University rugby. However should a player that is unable to participate in local rugby for a valid reason would like to be considered for an academy, they need to contact the appropriate DTDO for their area explaining their situation. No guarantees will be given to players, however previous background will be considered and players may be invited to the academy trials on an individual basis. The DTDOs lead and manage the Academy programme within each division and will review all nomination lists and make the final decision on which players are invited to trials in October. Please also note that, in a change from previous seasons, players will now not be asked to make a contribution payment for the programme.

Training camps will be based at two centres which will be located to provide, where possible, sensible travelling distances for all players. For the majority of the training camps the North and Midlands academies will be based at one location while London and South West train at another one. Attendance is compulsory for the training camps and matches. There is an expectation of players to maintain their commitment and maintain and improve performance throughout the programme. It is likely that the matches will all be held at Birmingham Exiles RFC, this will be confirmed in the autumn of 2014. Players will be expected to get themselves to all training and match locations and unless specified or agreed by the Player Development Manager (PDM) travelling expenses will not be paid. If a player is not selected for an academy then the DTDO and academy coaches will endeavour to keep in contact with the club/college/university to monitor their progress. Should there be injuries or players dropping out of an academy for any reason these non-selected players may get the chance to be able to be called back into the programme during the year. Any decision on a players call up will be made by the DTDO and PDM.
