2021 ELECTRIC DISTRIBUTION UNDERGROUND WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 1 - 3, 2021 KMU TRAINING CENTER | 2090 EAST AVENUE A, MCPHERSON, KS Kansas Municipal Utilities is pleased to offer the 2021 Electric Distribution Underground Workshop. This year’s event will be held at the KMU Training Center in McPherson, KS. This event will be conducted primarily in the field, with underground distribution system operations and maintenance training provided. This workshop has something for all levels of lineworker, from apprentice to crew leader, and will provide a variety of hands-on, classroom and demonstration sessions for today’s electric distribution personnel. The number of registrants will be limited to 30 for this workshop. Participants will be grouped by experience level and assigned work tasks and sessions suited for that level. Please indicate years of underground experience, approximate number of underground work hours annually, and length of employment on registration form. WORKSHOP TOPICS CLASSROOM AND/OR HANDS-ON SESSIONS This workshop will include training sessions on the following topics. These sessions will follow simulated tasks in a serial order, allowing participants the opportunity to experience the training in a real-world simulated setting. Students will be divided based on skill and proficiency levels. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced groups will cover the same topics, but will be taught at the appropriate knowledge level for the student. • Cable preparation & terminating techniques • Pad mount transformer change outs • Fault locating & cable repair • Excavation & jobsite safety • URD switching procedures & best practices • Constructing URD circuits & installing equipment WHAT TO BRING Due to the courses and activities offered at this workshop, participants are required to bring their own personal tools and climbing gear (if climbing). In addition, participants must bring: • Personal hand tools & URD cable prep tools • Hard hat & safety glasses • Leather gloves • Work boots (no tennis shoes allowed) • Rubber gloves & sleeves • Body harness, lanyard & fall arrest (limited fall arrest available from KMU) • High visibility vest and/or jacket • Appropriate outerwear for the weather Wearing of PPE will be strictly enforced. Participants without proper PPE will not be allowed on the training field. The APPA Safety Rules will be in effect. THE INSTRUCTORS FOR THIS WORKSHOP will include KMU Training & Safety staff, members of the Lineworker Training Committee, as well as associate members.
GENERAL SESSIONS The general sessions are held on the first and last day of the workshop. Participants must attend both general sessions to receive full credit for the workshop hours. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 CABLE PREPARATION & TERMINATIONS This class will cover the proper techniques for preparing diverse types of cable for various connections, terminations and splices. Instructors will also demonstrate the steps for making cable repairs before moving to the field. FAULT LOCATING TECHNIQUES This class will cover the various methods and equipment used to locate faults in underground electrical lines. The instructors will discuss various methods used at utilities across Kansas and provide hands-on demonstrations of the various types of equipment available. The instructor will use real-world examples to demonstrate these concepts for better understanding by line personnel. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION ROUND-TABLE AND PANEL DISCUSSION Senior Members of the KMU Lineworker Committee will discuss the current issues facing their utilities. Panel members will field questions from the audience and engage the group on current trends and best practices in the operation and maintenance of underground electrical systems. A CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT will be sent to the utility managers of each participant. Hours of attendance acquired will be reflected on the certificate. A student registered in an apprenticeship program may be able to use the hours from this workshop toward a portion of the apprenticeship program completion. ROTATING CLASSES/HANDS-ON These sessions will be tailored for lineworkers of all experience levels, and will be included in the completion of a set of real world scenarios, enabling all participants the opportunity to receive various sets of hands-on training. The sessions will be held throughout the workshop. FAULT LOCATING & CABLE SPLICING Locating faulted underground lines can prove to be challenging at times, even for seasoned lineworkers. The class will provide an overview of the equipment and techniques used to locate faults. The hands-on session will consist of locating faults in both cables in conduit and direct bury using equipment provided by vendors. Participants will either pull a new cable or expose fault and make repair to the cable. CABLE PREPARATION & TERMINATIONS This class is the hands-on continuation of the classroom session for various connections, terminations and splices. Apprentices enrolled in KMU’s line apprenticeship program will be able to have their skill evaluations for these topics completed during the workshop. Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own cable prep tools for the hands-on segment of this class. PROPER CABLE IDENTIFICATION, TESTING AND GROUNDING PROCEDURES This class is designed to demonstrate proper safety and work procedures for high voltage and secondary underground cable, isolation, identification, verification, and grounding. Students will train and participate in the use of standard operating procedures, switching procedures, and proper personal equipment needed for the job. Also covered will be tailgate briefings, rubber cover-up, lock-out/tag-out, effective communication between coworkers and maintaining minimum approach distances. UNDERGROUND (SINGLE- AND 3Ø) SYSTEM MAINTENANCE & REPAIR Underground system maintenance and repair is the heartbeat of your utility. The expertise to find and replace damaged or suspected problems before that unplanned outage is of paramount importance with computers and other sensitive electronics throughout your neighborhoods and small/large companies alike. Topics for this class: • Proper isolating, testing and grounding • Appropriate methods when installing and removing elbow terminations • Tool selection for terminating cable • Switching procedure • Lockout/Tagout • Trench layout UNDERGROUND (SINGLE- AND 3Ø) CONSTRUCTION Participants will construct various URD circuits and associated equipment and is designed for both apprentice and journeyman lineworkers. Crews will be given design specs that will require participants to determine the most eective and safe way to complete tasks assigned. Tasks will include tying into the future substation and expansion of the electric training field.
