1. Overview OBJECTIVES About the Scholarships Consumers of Mental Health WA (CoMHWA) is pleased to offer up to twenty scholarships to assist with completion of the CHC43515 Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work Qualification in 2019. Scholarships have been funded by the Mental Health Commission of Western Australia in order to build capacity of the peer workforce and contribute to improved employment outcomes for peer workers. Up to 20 scholarships will be awarded up to $1250 to students towards the costs of the qualification for students to undertake the qualification on campus with North Metropolitan TAFE (12 months part-time commencing July 2019). Indicative total course fees for 2019 are $3469.60 for full-fee and $1243.15 for concession. It is important to note that the scholarship may not cover the full cost of your fees, but will heavily contribute to the majority of the final amount, depending on your eligibility for a concession. About the Course The CHC43515 Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work is a recognised national qualification for people with lived experience as an individual with mental health issues, or a carer or family member, who work in lived experience roles. The course is offered in several modes of study, including Campus mode (classroom based), Traineeship or Recognition of Prior Learning pathways. Scholarships are available for Campus mode only. Attendance & Study Requirements The course is delivered at Leederville campus (public transport accessible) as a full-time, 12 month program commencing of the week of 29th July 2019. It involves: Attending classes 2 days a week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) over 4 school based terms Completion of study and assessments in your own time 80 hours of practical work placement Page 1 of 5
Eligibility To be eligible to apply for a scholarship you must meet the following criteria: (1) You have a lived experience of mental or emotional distress or issues (individual, carer or family experience. CoMHWA welcomes applications erom people with additional liee experiences relevant to mental health (e.g. experiences oe homelessness or substance use) and erom people with diverse backgrounds (e.g. oe culture, ability, gender/sexuality, age. (2) You are seeking to enter the Peer Workforce, or are currently working in a Peer Workforce role (e.g. in the mental health, alcohol and other drug, support group or other sectors). (3) You can meet the attendance, study and fee requirements for completion of the course. Note: Applicants must be able to commence the course on the week commencing 29th July 2019. (4) You are willing to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy test as part of the application process. (5) You are not engaged with a Disability Support employment organisation where funding is otherwise available to meet full or partial course costs. (6) You are willing to participate in evaluation of the course. How to Apply Complete and submit your Application Form. The Application Process Applicants are assessed by experienced peer workers on their attributes and readiness for peer work and formal studies via their written application process and group interviews. Shortlisted applicants must be available to attend a group interview, to be held between Monday 17th and Friday 21st June, and will be notified of the outcome of their application by Friday 28th June. Once a scholarship is awarded, students will be provided with further information and assistance to enrol and commence the course. Page 2 of 5
2. Frequently Asked Questions Q1. What is Peer Work? Peer Work is a specialist area in which a person must have lived experience to perform their role and utilise this experience in their work. In mental health, the person must have lived experience of mental health issues and recovery. Peer Workers use their lived experience to support others to achieve recovery and wellbeing. They may do this through peer support (directly supporting others through individual or group support), education, advocacy or advisory roles. Q2. What can I achieve from this qualification? The qualification is the nationally recognised qualification for paid peer work and equips people to work in paid roles using their lived experience of mental health issues to support others with lived experience. Examples of paid roles include Peer Support Workers, Peer Educators, Consumer and Carer Consultants, Representatives and Advisors. The course provides graduates with an equivalent employable skill level to other Cert IV qualifications and has some units in common with the Cert IV Mental Health. Q3. Can I enrol in the course without applying for a scholarship? No, all places in the course are reserved for scholarship recipients. Q4. What is the cost of the course? TAFE’s estimated costs are indicative only- prices will be confirmed by TAFE when they have set all course fees in July. The estimated costs are $3469.60 full fee and $1243.15 concession. Final course fees will be released in July. Payment plan options are available. The final awarded scholarship amount may slightly vary dependent on final course fees and the subsidy needs of the overall student cohort, in order to ensure that all scholarship recipients receive adequate financial support to complete the course. Q5. Are there other study options apart from attending campus? Please note the scholarships are only for campus based study. For prospective student and employer enquiries about the Recognition of Prior Learning or Traineeship options please contact TAFE via the contact details provided. Q6. If there are some units I could RPL for but would need to attend the course for other units, can I apply for a scholarship? The scholarships are for enrolment in face to face delivery, but you can still apply if you are eligible for RPL of some of the course units. Page 3 of 5
Q7. Can I apply for a government loan to complete the course? VET Student Loans (previously Vert Fee-Help) is not available for Cert IV level qualifications. The following units will be completed over the 12 month timeframe: Apply peer practices in the mental health sector Work legally and ethically Work with diversity Participate in WHS Facilitate self-directed recovery relationships Apply lived experience in mental health peer work Promote and facilitate self-advocacy Work effectively in trauma informed care Assess and promote social, emotional and physical wellbeing Increase safety of individuals at risk of suicide Provide services to people with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drug issues Provide loss and grief support Manage personal stressors in the work environment Contribute to the continuous improvement of mental health services Provide first aid Supervised field work (a minimum of 80 hours to be worked in a mental health service agency). NM TAFE sources field placement opportunities for students. Q9. How long does the course run for? The course will run for 12 months, from July 2019 to July 2020, however there has been an extension period granted until December 2020. Successful students will have the options of: Completing class-based study and work placement hours within the 12 month timeframe Completing class-based study in the 12 month timeframe and then completing your work placement in semester 2, 2020 (July – December).
