Ruptures and Utopia in Present Societies Modern societies are in crisis. Within growing parts of the population, IPU Summer School 2020 confidence in democratic institutions is seemingly eroding and the political discourse is increasingly characterised by emotionality. However, “Ruptures and Utopia in Present Societies: these cracks and divisions in the political sphere are not only of destructive nature, but possess a utopian potential as well. Emerging Psychanalytic Perspectives and Social Critique” protest movements, such as “Fridays for Future”, point in this direction. What exactly divides modern societies? What is the function of these cracks? What utopian potential do they foster? The IPU Summer School 2020 addresses these questions from sociological, psychological and psychoanalytic perspectives. In a multifaceted program, international scholars and students engage with the following three topics: 1. Antisemitism and Identity Politics 2. Authoritarianism 3. Generational breaks Intercultural reflection groups offer the opportunity to pursue own experiences with the treated contents. The additional module of Video July 5 – 17, 2020 Documentation expects all participants to discuss, process and spread these contents in a digital manner.
