FEATURE PROFILE – PIETER BLOEM man The behind the coffee With a passion for coffee and living his brand, Pieter The coffee shop hums with Bloem and his team are the activity. Businessmen pour Bootlegger Coffee Company. over their laptops, sipping on Americanos, while friends sitting in corners lean in animatedly, catching up over their cappuccinos. The original Bootlegger Coffee Shop in Regent Road, exquisitely decked out with polished wooden counters and doused in undeniable New York cool, has become something of a local institution. When I catch up with Pieter Bloem, the face and co- owner of the Bootlegger Coffee Company, he is chatting with patrons and staff, sharing a laugh and tending to business as usual. Pieter exudes friendliness and a casual air that extends to the brand that he and his partners have lovingly built up over nearly five years. Their own unique blend of coffee beans is roasted on site and comprises a combination of beans from Guatemala, Burundi and Costa Rica. With six Bootlegger branches now open, another branch opening in Bakoven, and plans to expand into London, it seems that Pieter, his wife, Olga Barrow, and business partners, Pieter at home with wife Olga, Antonie Basson and De Waal seven-month-old son, Petrus Basson, have hit on a winning John, and Boston Terrier, Dexter. formula.
