Message from the Chairman I hope you all enjoyed a happy Christmas and are settling in well to the New Year. It was a pleasure to meet and speak with many of you at The League’s Christmas lunch at the Vincent Rooms last month. The restaurant is operated by Westminster Kingsway College, and I think the student chefs deserve a resounding well done for the quality and quantity (!) of their numerous dishes. Our own student residents at Student House enjoyed a very festive Christmas party and Christmas Day meal complete, of course, with The Queen’s Speech, more of which on pages 6 and 7. Membership Update W ith deepest regret, we must announce the passing of Mr Robert Carrington, who had been a Life Member of The Victoria League. Since the autumn newsletter, we were very happy to welcome Ms Victoria Paton as our newest member. You’ll notice the standard array of activities found in this issue’s Diary of Events, in addition to a few new opportunities. One of which is an expected rare tour of Speaker’s House, nestled beneath Big Ben in the Palace of Westminster. Also new this year will be a tour of the State Rooms and garden at Buckingham Palace, in addition to a tour of the Imperial War Museum. Details for these and all other events can be found at the back of this issue. In December, twenty-eight League members, students, staff and guests enjoyed a superb Christmas luncheon at the Vincent Rooms at Westminster Kingsway College. We hope you enjoy having a look at some pictures from that afternoon! As always, please do tell family and friends about The League and encourage those interested to join. Winter 2019, The League | 5

From the Archives: Matron Dora Rhys Denese Wyatt South Australia T hese photographs are of my grandmother, Dora Rhys, treating a serviceman and of the dining room at The Victoria League Club in Great Cumberland Place during WWII. Dora was a matron at The Victoria League during this time. My mother Nona was a nurse at Middlesex Hospital, and she often stayed over with her mother in her quarters at The League. It was on one of these visits that she met my father Max Redden, an airman from Australia, who was convalescing after a ditching near Malta in which he was the sole survivor. They later married in London, and my brother was born in Wales very shortly before the war ended. They then moved to Australia, where I was born. My grandmother, Dora, eventually moved to Australia to be near her daughter, and she became the Matron at Kapara Repatriation Hospital at Somerton in Adelaide, South Australia.
