“Learned Institutions ought to be favorite objects with every free people. They throw that light over the public mind which is the best security against crafty and dangerous encroachments on the public liberty.” —James Madison in a letter to William T. Barry, 4 Aug. 1822, DLC: Madison Papers The official seal of James Madison University is based upon the baronial 13th-century coat of arms of the Madison family. The shape of the shield signifies its historic periods and the symbols are original. The mantling and insignia are black upon a silver shield with two black chevrons, each charged with a golden star. The torch in the crest position signifies enlightenment, and the motto, "Knowledge is Liberty," is derived from quotations by James Madison. HONORING James Madison University is the only university named for James Madison, the Father of the U.S. Constitution and fourth president of the United States. In many ways the connection to Mr. Madison’s legacy is much deeper than the name only. As we celebrate commencement, it is important for us to bring Mr. Madison to life for our university community. Acknowledging Madison is not intended as a history lesson. We believe that understanding Madison and his achievements is understanding liberty and its foundations. If each graduate can leave this university with that awareness crowning their outstanding JMU education, then liberty can be multiplied wherever they may go. James Madison University will proudly send nearly 4,500 agents of liberty and social harmony to the Commonwealth of Virginia and throughout the world. 2 0 2 1 M AY C O M M E N C E M E N T 3
FO U N D I N G JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY James Madison University was founded on March 14, 1908, when Virginia Gov. Claude A. Swanson signed the legislation creating the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. Early in the 20th century, the General Assembly, responding to a growing interest in public higher education in Virginia, authorized the establishment of a new normal school for the education of women teachers. (“Normal” schools were so named because they were supposed to set the standard — or “norm” — for excellence.) The idea of a new college was highly attractive to communities throughout the commonwealth. There was widespread competition in the state with 28 cities and towns making a case to be the site for the new school. State Sen. George B. Keezell and Del. P.B.F. Good of Rockingham County led the efforts for Harrisonburg in the State Senate and House of Delegates. The school began classes on Sept. 30, 1909, with an enrollment of 150 students and 15 faculty members in two buildings on a 50-acre campus. Today’s James Madison University has over 22,000 students, more than 2,500 faculty and staff, and a 785-acre campus with more than 130 buildings. 4 JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

THE UNDERGRADUATE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER DR. JOANNE V. GABBIN A professor of English at James Madison University, Joanne V. Gabbin was the director of the JMU Honors Program when she hosted the premier Furious Flower Poetry Conference in 1994, which was the first academic conference on Black poetry. She continued to invite Black poets and other scholars to the JMU campus under the auspices of the Honors Program (calling these guest lectures and readings Furious Flower events) and in 2005, after the grand success of another major Furious Flower Poetry Conference in 2004, JMU formally established the Furious Flower Poetry Center, the first and at the time only academic center devoted to Black poetry. Dr. Gabbin left her beloved position with the Honors Program to become executive director of the new center. Since then, Dr. Gabbin has served as a visionary leader, building key relationships with scholars, poets and corporate partners, as well as conceiving, overseeing and fundraising for special projects and events. The Furious Flower Archive is now a permanent and valued part of the JMU Libraries. She is the author of Sterling A. Brown: Building the Black Aesthetic Tradition, editor of Furious Flower: African American Poetry from the Black Arts Movement to the Present and The Furious Flowering of African American Poetry, and executive producer of the Furious Flower video and DVD series. She is also founder and organizer of the Wintergreen Women Writers’ Collective and as editor of Shaping Memories: Reflections of African American Women Writers collected their stories. Among other book projects, she authored the children’s book, I Bet She Called Me Sugar Plum. A dedicated teacher and scholar, Dr. Gabbin has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and scholarship. Among them are the College Language Association Creative Scholarship Award for her book Sterling A. Brown (1986), the James Madison University Faculty Women’s Caucus and Women’s Resource Network for Scholarship (1988), and the Outstanding Faculty Award, Virginia State Council of Higher Education in 1993. Dr. Gabbin was the recipient of the George Kent Award from the Gwendolyn Brooks Center at Chicago State University in 1994, the JMU Provost’s Award for Distinguished Service and the JMU Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award. In 2005, Dr. Gabbin was inducted into the International Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent. In the fall of 2016, the JMU Office of Sponsored Programs recognized her success with external funders with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Gabbin’s career has afforded her an opportunity to support, encourage and promote the work of poets, artists and her students. In her 50 years of teaching at colleges and universities around the country, Dr. Gabbin has built an award-winning honors program at JMU, curated a fine arts gallery in Harrisonburg, and established the Furious Flower Poetry Center, the first academic center devoted to Black poetry in the United States. Her growing legacy includes the honor of the first named professorship in the Honors College—Dr. Joanne Gabbin Professorship—endowed by Sean (’92) and Michele Tobin—and the naming of an historic building on the Quad— Joanne V. and Alexander Gabbin Hall—in recognition of her and her husband’s longtime dedication as members of the JMU faculty. 2 0 2 1 M AY C O M M E N C E M E N T 11

COL L E G E OF BUSINESS The focal point of the flag is a globe in motion, propelled by energy as suggested by the design around it. The facets of the globe symbolize the complex and inter-connected aspects of the global business environment and the many disciplines taught within the College of Business. The energy and movement portrayed symbolize the college’s influence and impact through preparing students to engage with the business world as principled leaders and professionals. Use of the academic color for business as the background anchors all in the context of business education. F R I D AY, M AY 7 , 2 0 2 1 • 3 P.
