The Field Trials Spring Newsletter 2019 AV Spaniel (Except Spaniel [Cocker]) Cocker Spaniel Championship IGL Retriever Championship Championship The Kennel Club Cocker Spaniel Championship By Jon Kean provide a successful Championship. This was the team’s eleventh Cocker Championship and they could not do without the valuable assistance of many other Cocker enthusiasts and volunteers who freely give their time to assist in producing an event of this scale. The 2019 Championship was massive by any standards, attracting spectators from a number of European countries, including Norway, Finland and Sweden. One of the spectators, Hywel Blake, President of the Sporting Spaniel Association of New South Wales in Australia told me: “The dog work has been of exceptional quality. I couldn’t believe the amount of game in the fields. I’ve been wanting to come to this event for 15 years. I’m almost speechless!” The judges – Peter Avery, Andrew Robinson, Adrian Slater and Wes Cocker Spaniel Championship Trophies © Kate Broers Thomas, did a superb job of managing this trial; every Cocker was given a thorough test. The guns, consisting of Garry Allan, Kim Cooper, Craig Dickman, Martin Edgar, Jamie Smith and Doug Tait did an outstanding job The popularity of Working Cocker Spaniels continues with unrelenting pace. over the course of the two days. Yet again the 89th Kennel Club Cocker Spaniel Championship was proof Continued on page 2 of the pudding. 43 Cockers qualified for this prestigious event, all of which took to the field for the coveted title of 2019 Champion of Champions. The Championship was held at Tollishill and Longcroft in the Scottish Borders. The host of this year’s championship was Eskdale Shooting Services. Eskdale shooting is a family business started by Wilson Young Snr in the late 1970s with Wilson Young Jnr joining the company in 1988. For over 30 years Eskdale has been specialising in providing clients with the highest quality 5 star driven Partridge and Pheasant shooting. It has entertained guests from all over the world, many of whom have been returning for over 25 years. Specialising in high-quality driven Pheasant and Partridge shooting, Eskdale was one of the first to develop Partridge shooting over valleys on the edge of the grouse moor. Put simply, the ground chosen for this year’s Championship was outstanding. I personally have done many days’ double gun loading on the ground and Eskdale Shooting Services is justifiably recognised as one of the premier institutions for challenging sport shooting within Scotland and the United Kingdom. This year’s Championship attracted new sponsorship from Skinner’s Field and Trial. The grounds chosen for the Championship – Tollishill and Longcroft – were specially prepared by Headkeeper Chris Hemingway. Chris moved to the Scottish Borders about 12 years ago and became Head of Pheasants at Eskdale Shooting Services in 2017. Chris loves all the seasons around keepering – from rearing through to shoot days, conservation and encouraging the younger generation of keepers. The Kennel Club Working Party charged with organising the event: John Dickson, Davy Dunn, Jon Bailey and myself as Chairman, worked Winner Steve Winspear and Skinner’s representative Pete Hanna © Kate Broers closely with Chris to ensure that every detail had been taken care of to

Report IGL Retriever Championship By Clare Wood Held at Packington Hall, West Midlands by kind permission of The Lord and Lady of Guernsey on 3, 4 & 5 December. The judges were Mark Bettinson, Jim Gale, Les McLean and Barry Taylor and the steward of the beat was Matt Nesbitt, Head Keeper. Billy Steel Jnr, handling FTCh Harperrig Breac, won The Retriever Trials Championship Challenge Cup for the third time to ensure his place in the pantheon of trialling greats. He had won previously in 1996 with FTCh Linksview Jet and in 2000 with FTCh Bracken of Berrybrae. In total, Billy has qualified to run in the Championship on 23 occasions; he has been placed 2nd and 4th and been awarded two Diplomas of Merit (including one with FTCh Leadburn Mist, sire of FTCh Harperrig Breac, in 2013). Billy Steel Jnr with FTCh Harperring Breac ©Clare Wood FTCh Harperrig Breac consistently demonstrated pace, style and drive in his work over the three days of the Championship. He showed that he has a nose and game finding ability second to none, picking two outstanding runners on the third day. This is a dog that any shoot would strive to have in its picking up team as the bag would most certainly be increased at the end of each day.
