July 2021 The Carlton Monthly Celebrating the Fourth of July in Memory Care Love Honor Provide by Brooke DeNisco Many holidays are a mixed blessing in memory care communities. Plenty of people with memory loss still remember holidays and enjoy the special events and decorations that go with them. Others can feel over- whelmed and displaced. Social distancing and other safety measures will likely be in place on this July 4, so it is likely to be more “low-key” than usual. Here are some other things to keep in mind for the holiday. Decorations Put up the red, white, and blue streamers and flags no earlier than July 3, and take them down no later than July 5. People with memory loss are often looking to the environment for clues. If they see American flags and red, white, and blue bunting, there is a good chance they’ll recognize it’s the Fourth of July. If it’s actual- ly only July 1, you’ll spend many days explaining that July 4 is in a few days. Correcting people and telling them that what they are observing in their environment is not accurate is easy to avoid by keeping decora- tions brief. Anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Approximately one in five veterans suffers from PTSD. As more veterans of the Korean and Vietnam Wars enter old age, the percentage will likely rise. Whether someone has PTSD or not, the loud, gun-like sound of fireworks can be very startling, especially when they are at random intervals. Keep the windows closed and play some music if people in the neighborhood are setting off firecrackers or fireworks. Display images of fireworks or live firework shows on your community television(s). A visual allows people to as- sociate the sounds they hear with a picture of something that is non-threatening and even enjoyable to watch. PBS broadcasts and streams fireworks from several locations. Their website also includes quizzes, trivia, and behind-the-scenes extras from fireworks displays. The Macy’s fireworks in New York City (still taking place this year) are on TV at 8 p.m. EDT (or 5 p.m. PDT) on the Fourth. There are plenty of DVDs featuring fireworks and music and free streaming sources. Routine Don’t ditch all your usual activities because it’s a holiday. Routine is an anchor that will enable people to en- MC joy theTheme of This holiday more. theyear, Month: the Fourth falls on a Saturday. TAKING YOUR BODY WHERE YOUR MIND WANTS TO GO Staying Active Promotes Independence Regular exercise can help seniors remain healthier and more independent as they age. Studies have shown that seniors who exercise regularly have longer life expectancies, remain independent longer, and improve both physically and psy- chologically. Balance decreases as we age, and more importantly, falling is a major problem. According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of every three Americans over the age of 65 falls each year, and among individuals 65-84, falls account for 87% of all fractures and are the second leading cause of spinal cord and brain injuries. Many seniors believe that walking is enough exercise to stay fit and healthy but, accord- ing to Dr. Robert Sweezy, renowned osteoporosis expert, walking is not enough to increase muscle and bone density, a key component in remaining SAN JOSE independent. “Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states.” ~ Carol Welch The Live 2B Healthy program is proven to increase balance, mobility and strength - directly reducing falls and injuries that could hamper senior mobility and hasten health decline. That keeps seniors vital and independent for much longer allowing them to participate in the activities they truly enjoy. In fitness tests, after working with participants for three months, balance had improved by over 250% and cardiovascular function by over 80% by doing regular strength training, three times per week. Regular exercise keeps seniors independent by improving their balance and endurance to prevent falls, injuries, as well as physical and cognitive decline. It’s never too late to start an exercise regimen and get moving. Many seniors in their eighties and nineties who have never exercised in their lives are now enjoying the benefits of participating in Live 2B Healthy’s fitness program. Live 2B Healthy is coming soon to Carlton Senior Living Orangevale! Live2BHealthy.com
