The Carbiner “For sport and for good fellowship” THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE CARBINE CLUB EDITION 3 of 2022- 2 February Tasmania – Special Test Cricket Event Queensland – Magic Millions Luncheon Coming Club Events The Carbine Club of Tasmania – Test Cricket Event Steve Adermann, Carbine Club of Tasmania President was quickly out of the blocks as soon as it was announced that the 5th Test would be played at Hobart’s Bellerive oval. Steve arranged an outstanding package for lucky Tas CC members and his report on the Club’s visit to the oval for Day One is below: Carbine Club Committee Member Simon Bevan and Guests at the Oval Carbine Club Tasmania members had the opportunity to attend the historic, first ever Ashes Test match played in Tasmania which began on Friday January 14, 2022. A total of 50 seats in the Cricket Tasmania Club House were made available to the Carbine Club Tasmania on Day One of the 5th Australian Men's Test Cricket Team's match against England at Blundstone Arena, Bellerive. All of the top flight corporate hospitality spots were snapped up within days amid a public scramble for general admission, reserved seating and members tickets which commenced the day Cricket Australia announced that Hobart would host the last Test match in the 2021/2022 Ashes series. The Carbine Club Tasmania corporate hospitality at the day/night game included a three course meal served in the function centre as well as ample finger food and grazing platters throughout the game. Guests also had access to reserved seats outside in the Ricky Ponting Stand which offered a great view of the entire ground, square of the wicket. A selection of beers, wines, ciders and soft drinks ensured that nobody went thirsty! Each of our 50 guests also received a special Gift Bag sponsored by Raine & Horne Real Estate courtesy of Carbine Club Tasmania member Ron Brooks. It included a number of items from Australian Cricket Test Team sponsors as well as a personalised commemorative stubby holder bearing the name of each guest.
CARBINER3-2022 During the dinner break, former Australian cricketer Simon Katich provided some insight to the day's play so far, which saw the Aussies in early trouble at 3/12. He was confident a revival was underway, and the home side would recover to amass 250+ in their first innings. Simon provided recollections from his time in the Australian Men's Cricket Test Team when he played 56 matches between 2001 & 2011. He also reflected on his career in the Sheffield Shield competition, India Premier League and English County Cricket. After a welcome from CCQ President Michael Robinson, the 19th Magic Millions Lunch got under way at The Star Casino, Gold Coast MC and CCQ member Alan Thomas was in superb form with his interviews of special guests Peter Gleeson [Sky News Presenter and racing enthusiast], Brae Sokolski [part owner Verry Elleegent, Incentivise &Coolangatta, 2022 Magic Millions winner] and noted Sydney trainer Adrian Bott. Alan Thomas was ‘Michael Parkinson like’ in his interviews, not holding back with his questions and keeping the 350 members and guests enthralled for the afternoon Vince Sorrenti, comedian, finalised a most enjoyable lunch with his humour and Covid jokes receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. 3
