From the Rector, Earlier this year Bishop Philip laid out his vision for the diocese in the coming years and beyond. Partly to share a new and exciting picture of the future of the Church, but also as a realistic response to the unique challenges caused by the global pandemic. In his statement the Bishop likens the Church to the Hebrew slaves emerging from slavery in Egypt but who, incredibly, also longed at times to return to the land of their captivity. Similarly, Bishop Philip cautions us about the pitfalls of thinking that once Covid-19 is ‘manageable’ that we can just ‘go back to normal’. The Bishop argues that life as we knew it may never be the same again, including the life of the Church. Instead, he paints a picture of a church that like the Hebrews, is encouraged to begin a new journey, to a new place and a different future. This new vision is called ‘On the Way’ and will be something we all become increasingly aware of in the months ahead. I have already started talking to our Pcc’s, about it, and you may also hear a reference to it in my sermons and talks. ‘On the Way’ as much as it is a vision for the future, may also turn out to be the greatest shake-up of the Church of England since the dissolution! For some, change is unwelcome and unsettling whilst for others it can be exciting and invigorating – whatever our perspective, ‘On the Way’ will be a challenge to us all. This may sound like idle speculation or hot air without any real substance, and there might be some truth in that, we will know more when our deanery begins the process with our appointed advisor later this month. One of the tasks we already know we will be asked to look at is creating a deanery plan for survival, which sounds drastic and perhaps a bit melodramatic, but is nevertheless the reality of the situation we face! I will be saying more about ‘On the Way’ as the journey unfolds and will of course share with you as much as I possibly can. In the meantime, I’m asking you to join me to pray for the process, our benefice, and the deanery as we begin to explore the way forward. I am also inviting our clergy, officers, and lay workers to join me in reforming our mission and ministry leadership team as our initial response to this challenge. Whatever the challenges and however difficult the outcomes, be assured of my support and companionship for as long as our journey together lasts…and best of all, God is with us! Revd. Paul
‘We are not safe until we are all safe’*, a reflection for September by Canon John Two years ago in the summer of 2019 the Rector and I were planning to mount a series of public lectures from Lent to Advent in the year to come. The idea was to engage churches and the local communities in mutual learning and conversations about climate change and sustainability. By Christmas we had an impressive list of speakers lined up ranging from a rain forest expert, a political geographer, a sea-level and flood researcher, a climate activist to a theologian. But it was not to be. A more immediate global crisis occurred: a deadly virus which first emerged in China at the turn of the year had, by Lent 2020, become pandemic. The virus became identified as Covid -19. Our lives were changed. Along with nearly every community in the world we had to adjust how we lived and most of our plans for the immediate future were put on hold. Plans for the long-term future could, from then on, only be provisional. Bridge articles from then on reflected this reality. Well, here we are in the late summer of 2021. In Cornwall we shan’t know for several months the public health effects of being a major tourist destination hosting millions of visitors, but one thing is certain -there will be a new variant of the virus emerging somewhere and sometime. We expect to have top-up, tailored vaccinations in the autumn. We have got used to the annual flu jabs so it just means an additional prick in the arm. Once again, the brilliant scientists who monitor pandemics and design vaccines for our safety alongside our remarkable NHS workers who deliver the goods will give us hope that most of us who have been vaccinated will come through. This can’t be said for the poorer countries of the world where vaccine supplies have been minimal. Globally the UN Covax scheme is enabling richer countries to pledge vaccine support for vaccine purchase, but it will be 2022 before basic immunity is achieved. Meanwhile, the UK has around 200 million surplus vaccines to hand and surely as a nation with an inherited Christian ethos we should be truly ‘world beating’ in generosity and pass them on to poorer countries. The scientists who worked sacrificially to deliver the Oxford/ AstraZeneca vaccine suggest that if every vaccine rich nation provided 10% of its stocks to rapidly support vaccination in transmission hotspots, it would have a phenomenal global effect on disease reduction. There is of course a view put about by some of the media that we should not give away anything, either cash or drugs, because our duty is to look after ourselves. But if the disease is running wild in other countries, we remain at risk from someone hopping on a ‘plane to the UK while unknowingly carrying an emergent Covid-19 variant. The popular political consensus may be that we are a multi-racial, pluralistic, post- Christian country but once again, like all overseas aid, the self-interested thing to do and the altruistic thing to do are the same. So not so far from the Biblical commandment to love one’s neighbour as oneself. Ah, ‘Who is my neighbour?’ asked the rich man of Jesus. He replied, ‘he who showed mercy’. No one is safe until we are all safe. Let us show mercy and true leadership. Tedros Ghebreyus, the director general of the World Health Organisation (WHO)
St Bartholomew’s News September 2021 Well at least we have had some lovely weather on and off, so the children can look forward to the return to school. I think Lostwithiel has mirrored what has happened generally in Cornwall, as the beach has been very busy and trying to find somewhere to park in town has been pretty hopeless. At least the mix of sun and rain has given us some lovely flowers and lots of Summer colour. Aren’t we all glad of the extra time we spent in the garden during Covid lockdown. We look forward to the Vintage Garden Party at the Rectory on Saturday 4th from 2 – 4.00. I’m sure some of us would like to dress suitably and have some fun. Let us hope the weather smiles down on Linda and Paul. The family service is the first Sunday and it will be interesting to see what Rev’d Sheila sets as the theme. We could wish that some youngsters from the town came along to join us in whatever Rev’d Sheila decides to do, and not leave it all to us ‘older kids’! Roger Smith continues to stream all the services and they can be accessed on Facebook. We are getting a good number of hits watching the services, but would be happier if some of these could come to the live services. We have a Scarecrow Festival at the end of the month for the children to show their expertise at these traditional figures, and they will be judged on Saturday 25th, before displaying in Church. We look forward to some interesting models. Our Archdeacon Kelly Betteridge, is coming to us for a quick visit on Tuesday 28th. She is keen to go round the deanery to get to know as many of the Church Officials from all the Benefices. The Spire Fund is increasing slowly, but we still have a long way to go. Thank you to everyone who has contributed in time and money. We still need volunteers to help with fundraising and also various jobs around the Church, so if you feel you could spare some time, please see the Churchwardens. Your help will be appreciated.
OLD LERRYN - BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT! Local historian Esthermary Todd worked for many years to piece together an understanding of the field layout and ownerships of Lerryn in times past. Unknown to any of us, her friend Liz, who lived just across the way, recreated Esthermary's work as a huge (46 x 35”) embroidered 'map' of the area. Liz took the embroidery with her when she moved away from the village and we knew nothing of it until after she died. Her daughter-in-law then contacted the hall and asked whether we would wish to be the custodians of this very remarkable piece of work. Of course we agreed, and the fabric, now safely framed, will be on display in the main hall from 10.30 to noon on Friday 10 September. After that it will be hung on the wall, but we thought people would like to get a closer look at it before then. Come and join us for coffee! Ann Henderson — For Lerryn Memorial Hall September Walks—Walk Talk Cornwall The Next walks are Wednesdays in September. Weds 1st, 8th and 15th 2.30pm at the Talbot walk to the Nursery for Coffee and Cake. Well behaved dogs and owners welcome, please ring Tabitha if you wish to attend. LOSTWITHIEL EDUCATIONAL TRUST The above Trust exists to benefit young people up to the age of 25 years old who live in the parishes of Lostwithiel and St Winnow. In the past we have helped with grants to large scale projects within the town of Lostwithiel e.g. skate park, children’s play areas, and with small groups such as guides/junior band. We also help individuals with various enterprises, including where the applicant shows promise in a particular area e.g. music, drama, sport, dance etc. Each application is discussed by the Trustees as to whether it falls within their remit and a decision is made at our quarterly meetings. Applications may be made at any time during the year by, or on behalf of, the young person, but for your information our next meeting is in February 2022. Application for grants should be made either by email to:- The Secretary Educational Trust, coffabridge3@yahoo.co.uk or edtrust@gmail.com or by mail, marked for the attention of Lostwithiel Educational Trust c/o Church Administration Office, St Bartholomew’s Church, Church Lane PL22 0EG.
Vintage Garden Party at the Rectory 2pm on Saturday 4th September 2021 Come and join us for a vintage afternoon tea with music, raffle, cake stall, tombola, plant swap, local produce and much more. Dress code – stylish, summer hat optional! (Prize for the best hat.) Free entry, all donations and proceeds in aid of the St Bartholomew’s church tower restoration fund. We’ll see you there! The Rectory, Springfield Close, Lostwithiel PL22 0RW 01208 592765 (If anyone has any donations for the raffle, tombola or any other stall, or can help out serving teas, please contact Linda Beynon.) Cynthia Stuart Smith - A Thanksgiving At St Winnow on the 15th September at 3pm there will be a short service of thanksgiving for the life of our old Lerryn friend before the committal of her ashes in the grave of her late husband Reg, who died in 2009. Cynthia died last year at the height of the Covid pandemic and the full solemnities could not be observed. Cynthia loved life in the community and was involved with the W I, The Produce Association, the Red Store Scrabble Club and she supported most aspects of village life. Her son Nick cordially invites all her friends to join him at St Winnow on the 15th September to pay tribute to her long and fruitful life and have tea together afterwards.
LERRYN & DISTRICT PRODUCE ASSOCIATION IN ASSOCIATION WITH LERRYN WOMEN'S INSTITUTE The year 2020 should have seen the 70th Lerryn Produce Show. Of course owing to the covid pandemic, it had to be cancelled and until July 2021 the committee were still unsure that we would be able to go ahead. We are delighted that with last minute arrangements put in place it was able to happen. Would anyone be able or want to bring exhibits to the show? Would anyone want to come this year? We needn't have worried. Locals and visitors alike made it a very special day and we all enjoyed being back together again in our lovely village hall with a wonderful display of high quality exhibits and 70th celebration cake which we all enjoyed after the prize giving at the end of the show. Our thanks go to Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Leslie who kindly opened the show but I would also like to thank everyone for showing that we are still a close community who knows how to pull together and enjoy ourselves. Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, is delighted to announce that its Moonlight Memory Walk will be returning to Falmouth on 2 October, and there will also be a virtual option for those to take part wherever they live. The Moonlight Memory Walk is a 5 mile evening sponsored walk held annually in Falmouth which has raised almost £300,000 for the children’s hospice charity since 2009. Last year the event was turned virtual and hundreds of people took part by completing their own sponsored memory walk in their local area. After months of lockdowns and restrictions having such an impact on fundraising, the team at Little Harbour are delighted to be able to be organising an event which will bring people together for a poignant evening walking in memory of their loved ones and raising vital funds. For those not able to make it to Falmouth on the evening the charity is still offering a virtual alternative where supporters can do their own sponsored memory walk and will have access to watch a live stream of the memory ceremony online. This year’s event is kindly being sponsored by National Friendly.
