    Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
                                              June 6, 2021
Gathering
Our service begins with an instrumental piece of music, during which the congregation can prepare for worship.

Voluntary Improvisation on “AZMON” Mr. Carpenter

Welcome/The Life of Our Church Rev. Gelini
*Gathering Hymn 610 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing AZMON
We continue our worship as a gathered community by praising God in song.
Confession
God calls us to acknowledge our sin and celebrate our adoption as forgiven children.

Prayer of Confession

One Christ himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for
righteousness. Let us confess our sins to the One who gives life eternally.

All God gave us the covenant of the law
to guide us and help us live with our neighbors in love.
        When we break God’s law,
we leave our neighbors hurt and bruised.
God’s law is a gift to us,
showing us how to keep our part of the covenant.
Even through old pain and wounds,
may we embrace the new life that Christ can bring.

Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon

One May the God of the law guide us in living lives
that keep the covenant of love.
May Christ’s forgiveness grant us new life,
even when we break God’s law.
May the Holy Spirit of conviction lead us to confession and renewal.
May we respond in love to the God of covenant and change.
Friends, we are forgiven; Thanks be to God.

*Response We Are Forgiven Hal H. Hopson (1995)
                                                                                                        (b. 1933)
Proclaiming the Word
We encounter the Word by preaching and song as we interpret and expound scripture. An Old Testament (Hebrew Scripture) reading
are words that Jesus knew and from which he often referred or quoted. A psalm is a prayer that Jesus used and cover every mood of
humanity’s relationship with God and one another. A reading from the New Testament is typically a letter (epistle) to the early Church,
the Acts of the Apostles, or the Revelation of John. A Gospel reading— “Gospel means the good news of Jesus” — (Matthew, Mark,
Luke, and John) depicts the life, teachings, death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, and concludes the reading of
scripture. We remain seated for the Old Testament, Psalm, and New Testament readings, but we stand for the Gospel reading to show
the particular importance placed on Jesus’ words and actions. The sermon directly follows the reading because it is to be grounded in
scripture—it illuminates the scripture reading and relates it to daily life.

Hebrew Scripture Exodus 20:12

“Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God
   is giving you.”

       After the reading
One The Word of the Lord.
       All Thanks be to God.

Response Alleluia! Fintan O’Carroll (1981)
                                                                                                                    (1922-1981)
*The Gospel Lesson John 19:18-20, 25-27

There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them. Pilate
also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the
Jews.” Many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near
the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

And that is what the soldiers did.

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of
Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing
beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is
your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

        After the reading
One The Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to You, Lord Christ.

Sermon “How Do You Feel About Your Parents?” The Rev. F. Christopher Gelini

Our Response
We respond by singing and affirming our faith.

Affirmation of Faith (Apostles’ Creed)
One Let us affirm our faith together, saying:
All I believe in God, the Father almighty,
          creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
          He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
          was crucified, died, and was buried;
          he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
          He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
          the holy catholic church,
          the communion of saints,
          the forgiveness of sins,
          the resurrection of the body,
          and the life everlasting. Amen.
Thanksgiving
We gratefully offer back to God some of what God has given us presenting our offerings, setting the table, lifting prayers, and praising
the triune God. We pray for ourselves and particularly on behalf of others. In our prayers we pray for the for the Universal Church, the
nation and all who govern, the welfare of the world, the concerns of our community of faith—including those who are in need or suffer.
We are reminded in prayer that we are part of a larger fellowship—the Church—the Body of Christ.

Prayer of Great Thanksgiving/Prayers of the People

Our Lord’s Prayer
We pray together the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as
it is heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And
lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the
         glory, forever. Amen.
