Letter FromTHE PRESIDENT In This I JUST RETURNED FROM MILLS RIVER, NC, home of Sierra Nevada’s east coast brewery and site of their bi-annual ISSUE distributor meeting. I’ve been a huge fan of Sierra for 25 years and it was one of the brands that I was extremely excited for us to take on last year. Delivering the Taste of Excellence 1 The brewery is truly spectacular and while it is not easy to get to Mills River, it is well worth the effort. The facility combines Cover Story 2 efficiency, sustainability and beauty. Sierra Mark Kramer with the Grossman family Nevada is owned and operated by two generations of the Grossman family. Ken Brewer Highlight 4 founded the brewery in Chico, CA over 38 years ago and he works alongside his son, Brian and daughter, Sierra. Working in a family business can be challenging, but it appears that Ken has a Super Buy-Rite 5 great relationship with Brian and Sierra, much like I am fortunate to have with my father, Charles. Ken is truly a pioneer and legend in craft beer. When he founded Chickie’s and Pete’s the brewery in 1980, there were 40 breweries in the US. Today there are close to 7,000. Yet, 38 years later they remain true to their values and make some of the Marlton 6 best beer in the country. They have always let their beer do the talking, but I was very excited to hear at New Products 7 the meeting that they will be embarking on their first national media campaign under the theme “Enjoy Outdoors”. There will be commercials, print ads, billboards and a large digital campaign. With the connection to the Sierra Nevada Seasonal Selections 9 Mountains, the outdoor theme is a perfect fit and an ideal antidote to digital overload that so many of us have. Programs 17 With the explosion of craft breweries, you don’t have to travel far to find one wherever you live. But as Ken said in his remarks, “local doesn’t necessarily mean good.” We have all seen the desire of many consumers to always want to try the The Craft Corner 25 latest beer. There is even a term that has been coined in the on-premise known as “Rotation Nation”, which reflects the constant changes of draught beer offerings. While variety is often a good thing, it isn’t always, especially when it comes at the expense of legendary brands introduced by true visionaries when the US beer industry was in a much different position. The good news is that it is not an either/or proposition. There is room for both legendary brands and the newest craft brewery. Specific to Sierra Nevada, they continue to innovate and bring exciting new brands to the market. In fact, they have the number one new craft brand this year with Hazy Little Thing. It is a fantastic representation of the New England style IPA. Without question, the craft explosion has brought excitement to the beer industry. It has also added complexity, as we try to manage all the new brands and packages. The constant rotation has made inventory management a moving target. Ultimately, Heady Times is published five times a year, courtesy the consumer will decide where the path will lead us. Still, there will always be a of Kramer Beverage. place for legendary brands like Sierra Nevada and I think it is a great reminder for all of us to keep it as a permanent fixture in our bars and stores. BrewerHIGHLIGHT Jersey Girl Brewing Company T HEY’RE NOT ABOUT A GIRL, AND NOT ABOUT BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN (although a fan). Jersey Girl Brewing Company is about beer and proudly stands by the sentiment, “Don’t assume they are all the same. No two Jersey girls are alike, just as no two craft beers are.” Based in Hackettstown, NJ, Jersey Girl was founded in October 2014 by friends Charles (Chuck) Aaron and Mike Bigger out of their love for craft beer and the rich beer culture in New Jersey. Four years later, they’ve grown to become a 15-employee sample room and brewery with distribution in 21 counties across the state. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint, as we know there are other beer choices,” says Chuck. “What we’re trying to do at Jersey Girl is build brands that are memorable, Owner Chuck Aaron behind the bar at the brewey in nearby Hackettstown, NJ. refreshing, and enjoyed by consumers.” Jersey Girl sits within three miles of two other breweries making the area a destination for out-of-towners who love tasty beer.
