S U N D A Y, J A N U A R Y 1 S T, 2 0 2 3 STAFF DIRECTORY Fr. Matthew Fish Pastor CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (CCD): Dear Church, Contact Mary Ellen Heinze, DRE at It’s great to be back “home” in Newport! As you know, I was away this Christmas with my parents 301-934-4352 in my hometown of Tacoma in Washington state. Thank you for all the prayers: my mother is doing well, all things considered. My parents and I had some nice, quiet time together, had some good SECRETARY; BULLETIN EDITOR: chats, did a bit of travel, but best of all spent Christmas Eve and Day together. I enjoyed spending a Contact Angela Lindsay lot of time walking around my hometown on this trip (at least until all that bad weather came!), and at 301-934-8825 did a bit of hiking in the ever-green outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. I was able to celebrate Mass several times at the parish I grew up in, in my hometown, the same parish both my parents were baptized in and where they were married (St. Patrick’s). I had time to see some old friends and some SCHOOL: relatives as well. What was impressed on my mind as I left my hometown to come back home to Archbishop Neale School (PK-8) Maryland was the importance of “gratitude.” In so many ways, doesn’t this best summarize the 105 Port Tobacco Road meaning of Christmas? Certainly, we can focus in on the stupendous mystery of the Incarnation— La Plata, Maryland 20646 how amazing that the almighty Lord has taken on human flesh and was born in the humblest and Phone: 301-934-9595 most ordinary of settings, hidden and obscure. And we can remember again why our Savior was born for us: to save us from our sins. We can be drawn each year to the words of the angel to the shepherds in the field, announcing the news that the Lord has fulfilled his promises that night: “Do SACRAMENTS not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For MATRIMONY: today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.” Contact the Pastor six months before the anticipated day. But I do not think it obscures the centrality of Christ in Christmas to say that the deeper meaning behind all of this is still “gratitude.” If the Son of God became man to save sinners, we might reflect how sin began with that forgetfulness of ingratitude: rather than remembering how everything they BAPTISM: had was a gift from the Father, Adam and Eve wanted something for themselves, independent of that Arrangements are made at the need to recognize one’s debt of gratitude. It’s humbling to have to say thank you, especially when it Rectory. At least one of the is about necessary things, things we cannot go without. It’s a common idea, that we should be able to sponsors must be a practicing provide the essentials for ourselves, and not have to rely on the generosity of others. But while it is Catholic. good to discover and strengthen our own abilities, I think it’s even more important to come to a deeper realization of that truth, put so well by St. Paul: “What do you possess that you have not CEMETERY: received?” Jesus, the Son of God made man, the eternal Word of the Father, the Second Person of Those who wish to purchase plots the Holy Trinity, he has nothing that he did not receive. What he is from all eternity is the Son, the should call Catholic Cemeteries at one who has received everything from the Father, just as the Father from all eternity is the one who 301-932-1766. has given everything he has to the Son. From all eternity, the Son knows that he has nothing of his own, but that everything is a gift: and this recognition always already overflows into unending COLLECTIONS gratitude: the Son knows that he has always been loved, and he rejoices to ever praise the Father who has always loved him. The Son knows who he is and his identity is so secure that he can, as Scripture says, “empty himself”: he can imitate the love of the Father who gives everything he has December 18 Collection $2756 by giving everything he has, the obedient and humble Lamb of God that takes away our sins, that December 25 collection will be in reverses that ancient sin of pride by entrusting himself completely to the love of the Father who will next weeks bulletin not abandon him even on the cross. The foundation of our spiritual life must be gratitude: to remember that at every moment we are and have been loved by the Father, and to respond by proclaiming that debt by our praise and desire to love him completely in return. For me, reconnecting with my home and family reminds me of how much I have to be thankful for: of how the Lord has always been there, especially through the tough times and struggles, never forgetting me but always calling and leading me. The past is only a prelude of the glory to come, just as it is “not even past,” to quote a great author. Everything has been a gift, and when I recognize the many great gifts in my life I once again realize the amazing faithfulness of our Savior and Redeemer: every day he comes to be born again in our lives, even in the humblest and poorest of circumstances, to bring the great news of hope, the victory of our King. Even when I forget him, he never forgets me: he continues to call and lead me. And when I do remember him, and thank him again, as I should, I see how all of this has been a part of a plan so amazing, to restore and redeem all things in my life. Merry Christmas! And I pray that this new year will be a privileged time to remember all that the Lord has done and is doing for us, and to return thanks to him with all our hearts for the great love he has given us. God bless you, Fr Matt
