Stage 2 or Year 12 Stage 1 of the SACE is generally completed in Year 11. Stage 2 is generally completed in Year 12. This can vary between schools and students.
The final stage of the SACE Preparation and qualification for further learning – university and TAFE. Developing skills in self-directed learning, project management, analysing information. Opportunities to specialise and begin transition to work or further study.
Stage 2 requirements
Stage 2 requirements At least 60 credits of Stage 2 subjects or courses (and all other SACE requirements). Research Project (10 credits). A C- grade or higher for Stage 2 requirements. Most students complete more than 70 credits at Stage 2.
SACE credits
Stage 2 / Year 12 assessment Performance standards define the five grades of achievement from A to E. Performance standards at grade describe the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to demonstrate that level of learning. All SACE teachers and assessors mark with reference to the performance standards. Performance standards are listed in subject outlines on the SACE website.
Assessment In Stage 2 or Year 12, student work is graded from A+ to E- Teachers assess 70% of student work, and 30% is assessed by the SACE Board
School assessment – 70% A sample of student work from every school is sent to the SACE Board for checking. Assessment experts check to ensure grades are accurate, fair and comparable with other SACE students. Sometimes grades are adjusted through this process which is called ‘moderation’.
External assessment – 30% The SACE Board marks the externally assessed component of all subjects. These assessments can be written or oral examinations, investigations or performances. Most exams take place in October and November. The exam timetable is available on the SACE website early each year.
The Research Project All SACE students study the Research Project. A chance to investigate a topic of interest in depth. Students develop skills in planning, research, analysis, and communication. Tertiary-style study; skills valued by employers.
Other subjects and courses
Recognised learning The SACE recognises learning in and outside school, for example: vocational education and training courses (VET) university and TAFE courses community learning.
Community learning Students can count up to 90 credits of community learning at Stage 1 or Stage 2. Programs such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Country Fire Service Training, and Australian Music Exams are recognised. Students may also receive credits for playing sport at an elite level, acting as a carer, or gaining a pilot’s licence.
Results Year 12 results are usually available before Christmas – online and in the mail. Students need their PIN and SACE registration number to access their results on the Students Online section of the SACE website. Students should check they can log in, and check their address is up to date, prior to exams and final assessments.
Beyond school
Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) Measures a student’s overall achievement compared with other students. Used by universities to select students for university courses. Ranges from 0 to 99.95. Calculated from university aggregate – based on 90 credits of SACE Stage 2 for entry in 2018.
Applying for 2018 university entry To be eligible, students will need to have: completed the SACE with at least 90 credits at Stage 2 gained an ATAR gained a university aggregate met any prerequisite subject requirements complied with rules regarding subject combinations and counting restrictions.
Applying for TAFE SACE meets TAFE SA Course Admission Requirements for most courses. TAFE SA considers other qualifications and experiences.

VET at SMC Year 12 in 2019
What is VET? • Courses that act as a transition between school and work. They help to explore a career. • Most Vocational Courses start at the beginning of the year. They may run for a Term, a Semester or for the whole year. • And you get SACE Credits!
Students studying VET in SACE • In 2018, VET has continued to grow and a recent survey in SA revealed that around 40% of all students included a VET component in their SACE • These students undertook 385 qualifications, across 33 industry areas • More than 700 students completed a Certificate III or higher and had it verified within their SACE • Many students counted their Certificate III in their ATAR calculation and TAFE SA Selection Score
Which Courses? In many cases, students will continue with their current VET Course; eg • Electrical students continue their Certificate 2 at PEER • Doorways to Construction students begin a Certificate 3 at Rosewater BUT….there are many other Courses offered in I.T., Hospitality, Automotive, Metal Engineering, Hair and Beauty, Child Care, Business, Fitness, Aged/Disability Care, etc.
In Year 12, students can look at…….. • Automotive • Electro technology • Construction • Hospitality • Welding/Metal Engineering • Plumbing • Graphic Design • Music-Sound Engineering • Hairdressing/Makeup • Music-song writing • Business/Retail • Fashion Design • Aquaculture (fish industry) • Child, Disability or Aged Care • I.T. • Animal Studies • Public safety (Surf Life Saving) • Photography • Event Management • Fitness • Game Development • AFL Sport • Food Processing
Certificate III’s • Many current Year 11’s are completing a Certificate III now and will ‘bank’ it for next year’s ATAR calculation • In Year 12, students undertaking a Certificate II or an approved full Certificate III (NOT Certificate III Retail at McDonald’s, Copenhagen or KFC) may do so at the exclusion of another subject i.e. 3 subjects, VET and Research Project • Approved Certificate III’s can count towards a student’s ATAR in Year 12. The score is derived from the scaled scores of the best 3 subjects and the next best scaled score out of 10 (often the Research Project) • Many of these Certificate III Courses run after hours or Monday and/or Friday afternoons, with 85 Year 11 & 12’s participating this year.
In Year 12, we offer the following Certificate III Courses • Certificate III in Business (Tuesday 4-7 in the City) • Certificate III in Fitness (Monday pm, Friday pm at SMC) • Certificate III in Hospitality (Monday pm at SMC) • Certificate III IT (Thebarton Senior College Wed 4-7). • Certificate IV Photoimaging (photography) (various times for continuing students) • Certificate III in Child Care (Wed 4.00-7.30 in the City) • Certificate III in Individual Support…care worker (Tues 4.00-7.30 in the City) • Certificate III in Public Safety (Search and Rescue) various times • Certificate III In Sport (AFL). One day a week at Pt Adelaide Football Club • These are offered at a time to minimize conflicts with Academic work. Some Work Experience hours may be required.
Why do a Certificate III instead of a 4th Subject? • If vocational, a student may wish to do extra in that industry eg if interested in a Business career, a student may wish to do the Certificate III in Business, or undertake a Fitness Course if interested in Physio or Human Movement • Potential to lift ATAR, but vital that the other 3 subjects and Research Project are of a high standard. What about 4 subjects and a Certificate III? • Yes, can be done but concern about ‘overload’.
By the way, you can get SACE Credits for ‘Community Learning’….. • The 8 Areas of Community Activity are: Community Development eg Youth Parliament, Trees for Life Independent Living eg self management living skills Performance eg public speaking, public performance Recreation Skills and Management eg managing public events Self Development eg Duke of Edinburgh, Cadets, Surf Life Saving, Music exams Sports Skills and Management eg high level officiating, coaching, performance Volunteering eg caregiving, mentoring, Meals on Wheels Work Skills & Career Development taking leadership responsibilities in the workplace
How Much Does a VET Course Cost? • SMC pays 50% of the tuition cost (not material costs) • Parents will be invoiced for the remaining %. • Funding may be available through a Government initiative called Work Ready, 100% of Certificate II Courses and around 80% of Certificate 3 Courses.
School Based Apprenticeships • Identify a career path and find someone willing to take you on as an apprentice. • School studies, training and work all fit together. • You complete year 12, gain training via a VET pathway and get paid for your work. • A head start to an apprenticeship.
Keeping Up • Attending a VET Course is no excuse for not handing in work • Be proactive to keep up with any work missed • Communicate with teacher, especially if extra help is needed • Attend Maths Help on Thursday lunchtime or extra tutorials organised by teachers. • SEQTA • Have a friend collect any worksheets etc • Be organised and make use of study time
What to do now………. • Make sure a purple VET Expression of Interest form is filled out in the Subject selection pack, even if continuing from this year • I will make an appointment with each student to arrange enrolment forms once I receive the Form • Email me earlier if you need clarification on anything.
Thank you
