THE SPIRIT OF FAITH & ZEAL

       Our Lasallian Ethos
LASALLIAN VALUES
• Faith

• Community
FAITH

Being in a Lasallian school is a call from God, a mission to grow to
   our fullest potential.
• We have faith in our ability as well as our peers’ ability to
grow individually as persons to learn according to our natural
ability and to act always with respect and responsibility.

• We have faith that the teachers and support staff have their
best interests at heart and will discharge their duties towards
us to the best of their ability.

• We have faith in God who has called us and has blessed us
with the necessary gifts to do our best.
SERVICE
Faith is lived out as Service
• As students/pupils we serve with zeal in whatever we do,
  always giving of our best.

• We pay special attention to the last, the lost and the least
(the marginalised and disadvantaged) both in our school
  community and outside it.
COMMUNITY
Faith calls us to build a fraternal community in which we
share a common mission and vision.

• We see our school mates as brothers and we see our
teachers as older brothers and sisters, all members of the
one Lasallian family here in our school.

• We carry out our mission "together and by
association" with our teachers and school mates.
OUR LASALLIAN MISSION

Enabling our children in a Lasallian
community,
     • to learn how to learn,
     • to learn how to live,

THE PSLE CHANGES ARE
PART OF A BIGGER STORY
Over the years, we have been fine-tuning
the education system to help our students
discover and develop their strengths and
interests while moving away from an
over-emphasis on academic results.

The changes to the PSLE scoring and S1 posting
are another step in this direction.

                                                 31
THE PSLE REMAINS
A USEFUL CHECKPOINT
It gauges the level of students’ learning
(in the key subjects) at the end of six years of
primary school and guides his future choices.

                                                   32
THE CHANGES TO THE PSLE SCORING
ARE MEANT TO REDUCE AN OVER-EMPHASIS
ON ACADEMIC RESULTS

By reducing fine By recognising a student’s
     differentiation at level of achievement,
a young age regardless of how his
                               peers have done

HOW PSLE
SCORING
WORKS
CURRENT SYSTEM

THE T-SCORE AGGREGATE
DETERMINES S1 POSTING
• It shows how well
a student has done SUBJECT GRADE
  compared to his cohort.
                             ENGLISH LANGUAGE A
• The T-score Aggregate
                             MOTHER TONGUE A
  largely determines which
  secondary school a MATHEMATICS A*
  student is posted to.
                             SCIENCE A*
• A student with ‘better’
                             T-SCORE AGGREGATE 244
  letter grades may have a
lower T-score Aggregate SECONDARY SCHOOL EXPRES
than a student with COURSE ELIGIBLE FOR S
  ‘poorer’ letter grades.

                                                           36
CURRENT SYSTEM

HOW THE T-SCORE AGGREGATE
AFFECTS STUDENTS
• It finely differentiates students.

• It shows how well students
have done relative to their peers.

                                                    37
WHY CHANGE?

WHAT THE NEW PSLE
SCORING SYSTEM AIMS TO DO
• Reduce fine differentiation of students at a
young age based on exam scores.
• Recognise a student’s level of achievement
in each subject, regardless of how his peers
  have done.

                                                               38
NEW SYSTEM

STUDENTS WITH SIMILAR SCORES
IN EACH SUBJECT WILL BE GROUPED
INTO ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS
                                                  PER SUBJECT
• There will be 8 Achievement Levels (ALs)
                                                      AL 1 (BEST)
  with AL1 being the best.
                                                     AL 2
• A student’s AL for each subject will reflect
                                                     AL 3
his level of achievement, rather than how
he has performed relative to his peers. AL 4

                                                     AL 5

                                                     AL 6

                                                     AL 7

                                                     AL 8

                                                 *PASS GRADE IS
                                                  AL7 OR BETTER

NEW SYSTEM

WHY 8 ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS?
• This offers a good balance. PER SUBJECT

• It reduces fine differentiation between AL 1 (BEST)

students while still giving parents and
                                                  AL 2
  educators a gauge of a student’s progress
at the end of primary school. AL 3

• Students can then be matched to suitable AL 4
  academic programmes in secondary schools.
                                                  AL 5

                                                  AL 6

                                                  AL 7

                                                  AL 8

                                              *PASS GRADE IS

FOUNDATION-LEVEL
SUBJECTS WILL BE SCORED
ON ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS
• Foundation-level subjects are designed

  Standard-level subjects.

• This enables them to focus on building
up strong fundamentals so that they are
  better prepared for secondary school.

• A student’s achievement in
  Foundation-level subjects will

  learning objectives of the curriculum.

HOW SEC 1 POSTING

• The T-score Aggregate is the

• Students are posted based on their

• If all the places in the first-choice
school have been filled, the school
that is second on the list will be
  considered.

• But the order in which a student
lists his schools does not give him

WHY CHANGE?

CHOICE ORDER OF SCHOOLS
TO MATTER MORE
WITH BROADER SCORING BANDS:
• More students will have the same
  PSLE Score.
• Schools will be less differentiated by
  cut-off points.

WHY CHOICE?
We recognise that families have different
considerations when choosing secondary
schools, for example, the school’s ethos,
culture, programmes and CCAs, as well as
distance between the school and home.

IN SUMMARY

Academic merit remains the first criterion
for secondary school posting. Choice order
will be a new tie-breaker.

NEW SYSTEM
• Choice order is introduced as a new
  tie-breaker to recognise the different
  considerations that families have in
  making school choices.
• To guide families, we will provide
  information on each school's
  unique programmes and indicative
  cut-off points.

                                                          56
IMPLEMENTATION
THE CHANGES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED FOR
THE 2021 PSLE COHORT (2016 Primary 1 cohort)
IN THE MEANTIME, WE WILL:

• Engage parents and other stakeholders
to help them understand the new system.

• Test the new PSLE scoring and posting
  systems thoroughly.

• Give schools time to familiarise themselves
  and support parents and students.

• Support secondary schools in further
  developing their distinctive programmes,
so students can choose schools that fit
their learning needs, interests and strengths.

                                                   58

LOOKING BEYOND ACADEMIC RESULTS
IN SUMMARY

REDUCE OVER-EMPHASIS ON
ACADEMIC RESULTS
• PSLE Scores replace T-score Aggregates,
  reducing fine differentiation.

• Achievement Levels will reflect student’s
level of achievement, regardless of how his
  peers have done.

• Choice order is a new tie-breaker to
  recognise the different considerations
that students and parents have in
  making school choices.

                                                             60
WE WANT OUR CHILDREN TO:
• Develop different aspects of
  their character.

• Know that there are different
  kinds of talents, academic
  and non-academic.

• Know that grades are just
                                  61
