Students from Taiwan Visit MV Mt. Vernon High School welcomed 16 students and 2 staff members from Neihu High School in Taipei, Taiwan, this past week. Families from around the MV community served as hosts, and the visiting students were able to experience our culture both within the school as well as through visits to the Children’s Museum, a Pacers game, and Ball State University. Not only were the visitors able to experience our culture, but they were able to share their own culture with the students and staff of MV. Many of these MV students who helped by serving as hosts will also be traveling in June of 2020 to visit Neihu High School so they will get to see these new friends’ homes! MVHS Girls Soccer Wins Team Pinnacle Award The Lady Marauders Soccer Team has been awarded the Team Pinnacle Award by the United Soccer Coaches association. This award recognizes teams that have earned distinction for their ethics and sportsmanship, achieved a High School Academic Award, and have a winning percentage of 75% or higher during the season. Congratulations to all the ladies and coaches for their hard work that led to this award!
English Academic Team Callout Do you enjoy reading? How about the 1920's? Then consider joining the English Academic Super Bowl Team. The theme for Academic Super Bowl this year is the Roaring Twenties. We will be studying The Great Gatsby and five poems. If you are interested in joining the team (and weren't on it last year) email Mrs. Zelencik ( alyson.zelencik@mvcsc.k12.in.us ) by 11/21/19 for an outline and more information. MV Reads: News From the Library "I touch the future. I teach." - Christa McAuliffe This week I would like to spotlight MVHS English teacher and Staff Reader, Mrs. Schiller. She is married with two children, teaches several different courses (including two AP courses), and sponsors the school newspaper. Even with this busy life, she finds a way to make reading a priority. Here’s what she had to say about her love of reading: “I can't remember a time I "fell in love" with books because I have always loved them. My earliest memories are of curling up in my mom's lap and reading together. Growing up we lived in Southern California and for awhile we only had one car, so we'd take the city bus to the library and spend hours there. They had a playhouse filled with cushions and I'd lay back on one and read until it was time to go home. That love of books has never left me. Reading is a priority for me and I do it every single day. I am always in the middle of at least four books. I have my classroom book for silent reading time, my bedside book which I read each night, my audiobook that I listen to during my long commute to school, and a non-fiction book I pick up whenever the mood hits me. I'm part of a school book club and participate in at least three reading challenges each year. My first one was the Rosie book challenge. I still have two left on the Pop Sugar book challenge. And, I am proud to say my goal of reading 125 books this year was completed in September. I'm currently at book 145 and I still have seven weeks to go! My kids are also HUGE readers and there is little I love more than curling up with them and reading. In fact, my son and I have read the entire Harry Potter series together. He starts one page and I read the next. Now I am working through them with my daughter. She gets book 4 for her 10th birthday in March. Books are the reason I became an English teacher and one of the many reasons I love my job!” #BelikeShannon #PerfectReadingRoleModel #MVReads Your librarians, Alyson Zelencik and Dana Hochstedler
