Te Pia The Flyer This Term’s Focus: Te papatai me te tangongitanga Inquiry and Innovation August 04 2021 Kia ora te whānau Term 3 Issue 8 Term Three is a critical one for our NCEA students as it is the last full term to ensure ACCORD Day all course requirements are submitted and met. This does continue into Term Four Next Wednesday 11 but only for a few weeks before students move into eaxm prep, so this term is the August. There will be last sustainable opportunity. One of the advantages of our smaller numbers is that NO school for students our students can access 1:1 support from their teacher if they are needing deeper clarification and guidance. I don’t believe all of our students take this opportunity on this day. to engage 1:1 with their teacher and I would encourage them to do so this term. Teachers are on site from 8am to 3.45pm Monday to Thursday and I know they Thursday Fundraisers make themselves available at lunchtimes as well. Our Senior School Teachers are Te Kuruwaka (Room working very hard to try and get all of our students up to the standard and we want 2) will continue selling to encourage our Year 11 -13 students to take advantage of this. hot chocolate outside the Staffroom from Our Primary School have begun their Term Three Integrated Unit, “Saving CAS in 8.30 am each Thursday Perpetuity”. Nationals Report - Lilly Bain In the holidays Momoti, Natalie, Ben, Bianca and I went to Dunedin for Nationals. I was lucky enough to be a selected player for Football, Netball B and Ki-O-Rahi at Nationals to represent the Top of the South Island team this year. Once we were down in Dunedin, after the pōwhiri, the sports began. It was a tiring three days of sports playing a game of football, netball and ki o rahi one after the other, but it was amazing to see all the selected players from Area Schools around New Zealand come together to challenge other teams on the fields or courts. I loved playing these games at such a hard level and also loved the competition everyone brought. After the three days of sports was complete, I was selected for the Netball B and Ki o Rahi South Island team which then takes on the North Island team. These games were very tough but a great opportunity to learn new tactics and to display these on court while working as a team. I really loved my week down there, even though it was a bit chilly and I was privileged enough to have made the New Zealand Ki-O-Rahi Team which was a wicked achievement to take away from the week. Big thanks to Lorna, Sam and Tracey as well as all the coaches. Ngā mihi, Lilly Together we ride the wave of life long success | Creative, Collaborative, Connected, Confident
Introducing Pip Brake I have been living in Melbourne, Australia for the past fourteen years and teaching at Caulfield Grammar School. Before that I lived in London and enjoyed travelling all around the world. I have visited over fifty six countries but with the recent global events feel incredibly blessed that I can come home to NZ. I especially love to visit countries in Asia as I love the food, history and culture, although I also have a slight obsession with visiting castles in Europe. I love old ‘stuff’. I brought my dog Bella with me, she is twelve years old and a Hungarian Vizsla. I am looking forward to refreshing my cultural understanding in my home country and eventually hope to be living on a farm as I am over the ‘city life’. While I am originally from Whakatane, I have friends and family in Takaka and Nelson so this is a wonderful opportunity for me and I am very appreciative. We hope you are all enjoying the Olympics - we have an eye-catching display in our foyer about Japan and NZ’s 100 Year attendance at the Olympics (The first NZ team was sent to Antwerp Belgium in 1920). Before that we joined with Australia in 1908 to compete. I read a thought provoking article from the USA (Post & Courier) from a University Professor & Administrator (Solomon Stevens) about today’s students inability to critically and deeply read articles and books which has lead to the erosion of democracy, it is worth reading the whole article but one part partly sums it up ….. “Young people today may be technically literate, but they are just not interested in doing any kind of sustained, complicated reading. And when they do read anything longer than a meme on social media, they have trouble understanding what they have read.” We need our citizens to understand that….. “In democracies, people need to prepare themselves to vote and to hold their government accountable and not be susceptible to propaganda.” Let’s keep up that reading guys, adults and youngsters alike, it might make the world a better place. Good luck, Diane & Donna Together we ride the wave of life long success | Creative, Collaborative, Connected, Confident
