Dear Parents, We have experienced some extremes of temperature this week as Cross Curricular, Hot and Cold fever has taken over the Junior School. From the igloo in 4U to the fires in Forest School the children have enthusiastically embraced another innovative and exciting learning week. I have just removed my Penguin Costume having spent a magical time with the ‘waddle’ in Year 1 as they recited some of their Hot and Cold Action Poetry to the largest waddle of penguins I have seen outside of Antarctica. A truly inspirational learning experience that has been mirrored across the school all week. My thanks to all the children for embracing the theme and to the staff for all the effort into making education so much fun. Monday night saw an excited band of supporters venture forth to the wilds of Milton Keynes Dons to support the 1 st XI Football Team in the Boodles ISFA U18 Cup Final. A repeat of the 2017 final saw us pitted against the might of Millfield School and, after a tense and thrilling match, the boys were victorious 2-1 to bring home the Cup for the second time in 3 years. The second Cup Final in a week took place on Thursday for the U15s and it was wonderful to see some ex-Junior School pupils playing in the team. Unfortunately they lost 1-2 to a very strong Aldenham team, however we hope to see some of them representing the 1st XI in years to come. Please can I remind all parents that pupils for Breakfast Club must not be left unattended at school before 7.45am as there is nobody to supervise them at this time. This time next week Disco fever will be upon us and we are all looking forward to the debut performance from our guest DJ. Don’t forget there is plenty of merchandise on sale during next week to light up the dance floor. Mr Evans spent another exciting day in the Junior School on Wednesday and he will be back again later in the term for Open Day. Thank you to all those who have given him such a warm welcome so far as he starts his journey towards becoming a fully fledged member of the Royal Russell community. The week was rounded off in magical fashion by Zoe and Molly singing for us in assembly this afternoon. Thank you girls for a wonderful performance. Have a great weekend. Mr James C Thompson Junior School Headmaster

Junior School Sports The Under 7 football team represented Royal Russell superbly well at the weekend at the annual Hawthorns football tournament. After two good draws to start with against Elmhurst and Solefield, the team came up against some strong opposition but never gave up and stayed positive throughout. A special mention to William in goal who was absolutely superb!
Mitchell, Max & Alister travelled to Cannock at the weekend for the Nationals, having already qualified through 2 rounds this was it! They started the competition with great set routines followed by strong voluntaries. The boys finished in a brilliant 4th place. They have worked so hard for the finals it was lovely to see how much their routines had improved. A fantastic weekend for our first boys team to reach the National Schools finals!
We hosted a great afternoon of Netball on Tuesday with 8 teams attempting to secure 2 places at the Croydon Schools Tournament finals. The U11B squad put in a solid performance against 3 A teams, winning 3-0 to Forest and 2 close losses, the girls worked hard despite some last minute changes and improved every game. The A team continued their successful run with 5 wins out of 5 to win the tournament. They played some superb netball with great shooting and awesome defence. They now qualify through to the finals. Well done girls a fab afternoon.
The Under 9 hockey team performed admirably at the Parkside tournament on Tuesday afternoon. In a very strong group, the team suffered tight losses against St George’s, St Andrews and Hoe Bridge. They then picked up their work rate, picking up an impressive draw against Barrow Hills before going one better in beating Lambrook. Special mention must go to Jojo in goal who received many compliments from the other coaches.
Many Junior School pupils made the journey up to Milton Keynes on Monday night to watch the Royal Russell 1st XI in the ISFA Boodles Cup final. A thrilling game saw Royal Russell come out as 2-1 winners and there is no doubt that the travelling fans played a very important part in this. Here’s hoping that the current Junior School pupils will get to experience a similar final in a few years!

In order to inspire them we are looking for parents who are willing to speak to Year 6 about their successes and challenges in creating their own business. We would be extremely grateful for the expertise and knowledge you would be able to provide. If you would like to speak to Year 6 as part of our inspiration day, even if your child is not in that year group at that moment, please contact: cking@royalrussell.co.uk Date: Monday 29th April at 9.30am.

Iam currently working on the seventh series of Child Genius and we are looking for parents with high-achieving children aged 8-12 year olds who might potentially be interested in hearing more about it. My reason for getting in touch in to see if you might be able to circulate the attached flyer to parents of children that might want to apply. You could attach it to a newsletter, put it on a noticeboard, post it on your website or social media feeds or if you’d rather hardcopies we can arrange this for you. Alternatively, follow this link to be taken to application form: https://www.walltowall.co.uk/casting/child-genius-2019_612.aspx Additionally We will be holding an Open Day on Saturday 4th May in London for lots of children and their families to attend, with no obligation to take part in the series. It is a fun day, offering parents and children a chance to find out more about the show, plus an opportunity to meet other like-minded children, and take part in a series of fun challenges and games. I can send you a flyer for this nearer the time, but anyone potentially interested can get in touch for further details if they wish. The new series of Child Genius is on every night this week at 8pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on Saturday. Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from you. Best Wishes, Hayley

We are super cautious on behalf of our children with allergies, and as such are a nut free school. We won’t risk cakes and sweets being brought in from home, so when it’s a child’s birthday, we encourage the donation of a book instead. An inscription with your child’s name will go into the book to mark the special occasion.
