6 August 2021 From the Principal’s Desk Kia ora katoa Winter sport is starting to wrap up as teams move into semi finals and finals. Regardless of results, our students playing winter sports have much to be proud of. I am always impressed by the qualities our students display against opponents. One example of this was the Senior Boys Basketball team on Wednesday evening playing Gore High School in the final. The Menzies team struggled to find five able bodied players to take the court, so the least injured played. It was a spectacular game. Menzies lost by 10 points, yet their teamwork, determination and sportsmanship won the admiration of everyone watching. Thank you to all the coaches, managers, administrators and supporters who have contributed to successful seasons for hockey, soccer, netball, rugby, basketball and shooting teams. JM Nunez & Peyton Dickson It was with much regret that the Board of Trustees accepted Marcia Kennedy’s resignation. Marcia has been teaching Outdoor Education on a part-time basis this year as well as organising and supporting camps. She is respected and trusted by students and colleagues and will be missed in the Outdoor Department. Marcia has promised to come back and do some relief teaching. We wish her well as she focuses on the family farming business and we welcome Hayley Clark to Menzies College who has kindly agreed to help out with some of the classes until seniors leave. We are getting closer to the delivery of school lunches with just the ovens to arrive. We are on track to start next Thursday 12 August. Students and staff are starting to adjust to the different times for interval and lunch. It has been brought to my attention that in a previous newsletter I said that only school lunches are to be eaten during the Whānau time set aside for school lunches. This was thoughtless. Obviously, I do not want to waste food and want students to try it but equally I do not want students to feel singled out if for some reason, they are not eating it. The Whānau time from 12.10pm until 12.25pm is for eating lunch regardless of who supplies it. In the holidays Alyssa Gauldie from Year 8 travelled to Auckland to compete in the National Gymnastics competition. Alyssa won an Overall Bronze medal competing in the Under 13 age group. Countless hours of hard work and many sacrifices have gone into Alyssa being competitive at the national level. We are all very proud of her achievements. continued over page Menzies College Information/Announcements are available on the Menzies College App Download SchoolAppsNZ from App Store or Google Play
Brianna Ferguson also competed with distinction in the Southland Under 18 Netball team that competed in the National Tournament in Rotorua in the holidays. The team finished 6th out of 38 teams. Brianna contributed significantly to this as a shoot and played every game. Finally, good luck to Peyton Dickson, Lucy Mann, Summer Edwards, Alexis Tahana-Payne, Nadine Wilson, Jante Henderson and Kaydin Gaffey-Mansfield who leave on Monday to participate in the Rangatahi O Te Moana science enrichment programme in Dunedin. By now you are probably aware that the PTA is up and running again. We had a very successful catering event and thank you to all those that made this successful. We provided dinner for the teachers during Whanau Conferences. Thanks to Totara house and the staff that had the meal ready when needed. The staff thought the food was fantastic and enjoyed sitting down to a hot meal together. We have approved the purchase of sports gear and games for the junior school and the game ‘Match Madness’ for the library. Careers Department/Transition Department Careers Fest On Thursday 29 July, 68 of our Year 11 and 12 students attended a Career Fest event held at Stadium Southland. Students had the opportunity to visit 65 exhibits and talk to people in the industry and get some ideas for their future career pathway options. Career Fest plays a key role in educating for employment by providing vital links with employers, industry experts, training organisations’ and tertiary institutions with the purpose of raising student awareness and encouraging them to make concrete career plans. Gauging by their comments on the day and survey forms returned, it was a very successful event which the students enjoyed. Thank you to Mr Bennett, Mrs Williams, Mrs McFadzien and Mrs Ritani for coming along and supervising on the day. Quade Ryan on a tractor simulator Lincoln Joyce Careers Support On Thursday 29 July the Year 11 and 12 students travelled by buses to Stadium Southland to participate in Careerfest. Careerfest is an annual event where career pathways can be explored. Exhibitors were education providers, local businesses, industrial training organisations and specialists who answered students’ questions about the careers they represented. Some highlights were the hands-on activities e.g. making non alcoholic cocktails, being able to talk face to face with the ‘experts’ and also the free items offered. Attending the Careerfest gave us career options that we haven’t thought about and informed us about subjects we need to take next year. Careerfest was a worthwhile experience. Thank you to the staff who organised for us to attend the event and those who accompanied us on the day. 103 English Class University Scholarships for Year 13 Students MoneyHub, a consumer finance website, has published a guide to hundreds of scholarships for any student planning to start University in 2022. Stuart Clark Careers/Transition Department Menzies College 50th Reunion Menzies College is having its 50th Reunion from the 4th-6th February, 2022. We would like to invite any former students, staff and friends of the school to return to Southland and see how much their school has grown over the past 50 years. You can email your interest to menzies50th@menzies.school.nz or go to https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/menzies-college-50th-reunion-registration-162501808283 Junior School Our Year 7 and 8 students have been busy since week four, term 2 working on different topics. Year 7 - Ancient Civilisation and Year 8 - Disasters in Social Science. They had to come up with a focus question or questions to help develop their understanding and report back on their findings. Each year level had a focus they had to concentrate on and demonstrate their understanding and knowledge they had acquired from the investigation. The Year 8 focus was on ‘How and Why’ but they also needed to explain effects from a disaster, after effects and then the ongoing effects. They then had to plan and design their board making sure they had all factors required for a board to be completed. Carl Lambert Head of Junior School
Community Notices Wyndham Pioneer Lions Club Recycling The Wyndham Pioneer Lions collect many things that raise money for the underprivileged and disadvantaged but we can do more with your help. • Bread tags raise funds for wheelchairs (if they are colour coded before they handed in that would be great). • Tear tabs from aluminium cans and wine bottle tops raise funds for ‘Kidney Kids’. • Glasses (both reading and sunglasses) and hearing aids are distributed in places like the Pacific Islands to improve the quality of lives who cannot afford such ‘extravagances’. • Aluminium cans and cardboard are collected by The Pakeke Lions in Gore. If you can help it would be appreciated if you could take them to Menzies College or contact Mrs C Garthwaite on (03) 206 6223.
