FIRE SCHOOL - MAY 30-JUNE 1, 2019 - LABETTE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
2.5 ATTACK AND THE UNDERSTAFFED ENGINE
This class will give the student multiple ways to stretch and flow a 2.5 attack
line as a single resource. We will spend most of the day stretching and flow-
ing and giving each student multiple opportunities to go from hose on the
rig to stretched out and flowing. There will be a short lecture in the morning
covering some techniques for the understaffed engine. Students will need
full bunker gear and I encourage an SCBA to practice how we play. The class
in the afternoon will last as long as the students want to keep flowing and
learning.

DRIVING SIMULATOR TRAINING
This training utilizes simulators to reinforce good driving skills and mediate
the correct response to a driving situation. Situations are repeatable until the
desired skill is learned without endangering students or damaging equip-
ment. The simulator contains all of the functions and controls needed for
conducting driver training. The training will be set up in 2 hour blocks with 4
students in each block; students must register for their day/time by going to
the KFRTI website as follows, as well as indicating on the LCC registration
form which class they want to take.
FIRE SCHOOL - MAY 30-JUNE 1, 2019 - LABETTE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
FIRE SERVICE INSTRUCTOR 1
(PART 1: SEMINAR - PART 2: FACE TO FACE)
This session is Part 2 of a blended learning format with a focus on short,
verbal presentations of assorted fire service topics by students participating
as group leaders in various classroom-based activities. Every participant is
required to perform the role of group leader in this training format. Addi-
tionally, all students are assigned a 15-minute presentation to deliver to the
class on the final day of the seminar. Note: All students must first complete
the online portion (Part 1) of the training before attending.

FIREFIGHTER SAFETY AND LINE OF DUTY DEATH
In Mrs. Davis’s lecture, she discusses her personal experience in dealing with
the Line of Duty Death of her first husband, Lt. Bryon Johnson of Sedgwick
County Fire District #1 in 2007. Mrs. Davis also discusses the importance of
firefighter health, safety and training.
Often, after a certain amount of time on department, firefighters become
complacent in their day to day routine. They make take their knowledge and
procedure training for granted. When these things come together, injury or
on the job death may occur. These two events cause tragedy not only to the
family of the fallen but to the department as well. Keeping health, safety and
training at the forefront of every day, every shift and every scene, is essential
for survival.

FIREGROUND PHYSICS
This class will provide the “why” and “how” of the skills and techniques we
use on the fireground. By having a basic understanding of the laws of physics
we can be more efficient with our fireground functions. We will go over the
basics of forces around us and how we apply them, body mechanics and the
use of the tools of the trade.
FIRE SCHOOL - MAY 30-JUNE 1, 2019 - LABETTE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
INTERIOR FIREFIGHTING
The Interior Firefighting Training
course is designed to prepare students
to operate as members of interior fire
attack teams. Students will extinguish
live fires under controlled conditions
in the KF&RTI’s interior fire prop.
They will advance active hose lines up
and down stairs to simulate basement
or below grade fires. This course
requires strenuous activity; there-
fore, only firefighters who have been
medically evaluated, mask fit tested, and have had their personal protective
clothing (including self-contained breathing apparatus) properly fitted by
their fire departments will be allowed to participate in the course.

LANDING ZONE CLASS
This is an hour long classroom with powerpoint style class followed by the
aircraft flying in to the LZ. We will have two crew members on the ground
doing the classroom work and will follow you to the LZ and three crew
members that will fly in with the aircraft.

LEADING WITH LADDERS, SEARCH, AND VENT
This class will teach and touch on many effective techniques on key fire
ground assignments that lead to success on the fire ground.
Ladders: understanding the parts and functions of all types of ladders.
Covering the different ways to carry ladders and throw ladders successfully
in every situation. Understanding techniques to effectively work on the roof
using roof ladders. Understanding the purpose of being aggressive in setting
ladders on the foreground scene.
Search: covering techniques and search methods that will give firefighters
the confidence to aggressively search houses , apartments, and commercial
buildings. Techniques for things to look for upon arrival and while searching.
Vent: this topic will cover the important of ventilation and why it is needed
on the fire ground and when it is needed on the fire ground. Covering topics
of cutting on residential, apartments, and commercial buildings. Ventilation
will also cover the different types of cuts on roofs and what saws you can use
on different roofs.
FIRE SCHOOL - MAY 30-JUNE 1, 2019 - LABETTE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
LIVE HOUSE BURN
Real experience, real fire conditions, real techniques and real fun. Come and
collaborate with experienced firemen that will share their knowledge to ben-
efit the most seasoned smoke diver to the newest rookie. This class is a hands
on, drag hose, spray water, ask questions course in full turnouts and SCBA.
Attendants must have a current FIT test, adequate turnouts and a desire to
do work and gain experience in interior firefighting.
There will be a $40 fee for this class in addition to the regular $20 registra-
tion fee. Space is limited to 20 participants per day so sign up early!
→ Full PPE & SCBA required

RAPID INTERVENTION
A downed firefighter is every department’s worst nightmare. One thing
history has taught us is that Rapid Intervention is not rapid, having crews
trained to accomplish this mission can be the difference between a close call
and tragedy. Rapid Intervention demands that your crews be proficient in ev-
ery aspect of firefighting, from thermal imager use, to proficient truck work,
to being able to think and improvise under pressure. This class will rotate
crews through several skill stations and culminate with a real time scenario
at the end to test your crew’s mettle.
→ Full structural turnout gear and SCBA required

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION
The topics will be health, safety and First Responder mental fitness. Tim
Millspaugh, Director of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network of Kansas,
will do a presentation on cancer and Chief Jim Bodenheimer will do one on
preparing personnel mentally for crisis situations, then the discussion will
proceed from there.
FIRE SCHOOL - MAY 30-JUNE 1, 2019 - LABETTE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
STRESS AWARENESS, MANAGEMENT &
MITIGATION TRAINING < This session is only for firefighters >
You have experienced a traumatic event or critical incident; even though the
event may be over, you may now be experiencing (or may experience later)
some strong emotional or physical reactions. It is very common, in fact quite
normal, for people to experience emotional aftershocks when they have
passed through a horrible event.
Sometimes the emotional aftershocks appear immediately after the event;
sometimes they may appear a few hours or a few days later. And in some
cases, weeks or months may pass before the stress reactions appear.
The signs and symptoms of a stress reaction may last a few days, a few weeks,
a few months or longer, depending on the severity of the traumatic event.
The understanding and support of loved ones usually cause the stress reac-
tions to pass more quickly. Occasionally, the event is so painful that profes-
sional assistance may be necessary; this simply indicates that the particular
event was too powerful for the person to manage by him or herself.

VEHICLE EXTRICATION
Course includes vehicle preparation, vehicle placement at the scene, extri-
cation techniques, gaining access, patient care, and disentanglement. Safety
will be stressed; students must wear full protective clothing in the training
area excluding SCBA. (Limit 15)
VES BEYOND THE BASICS
This Live Fire class will show you how aggressive tactics on a fireground can
and will impact the survivability rate of civilian lives. Whether you’re in a
small rural department or a large city department you will see the value and
the importance of the training and knowledge that you will receive. You will
learn to recognize the survivable space and how to utilize a tactic of entering
a structure through a non-traditional opening. This class with will build on
basic tactics of VES and develop them into advanced techniques. You will
hear about tips on Building Construction, 360’s size-up, critical Search and
Rescue techniques, victim removable and much more. If you want to make a
difference in community sign-up, bring Full PPE, SCBA and a SCBA bottle.
