Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School’s (STS’s) summer camp programs offer a wide variety of amazing experiences that are sure to have children ages 4 to 17 excited, engaged, and energized over the summer months. Whether it is exploring the outdoors on our beautiful 220-acre campus, or creating, imagining, and inventing in the Innovation Lab, or honing sports skills in the Sports Centre, there is an enriched learning experience for everyone to “say yes” to! Our Summer Camps mirror STS’s focus on inspiring compassionate, curious, and creative global citizens who lead with courage. In our natural setting and state-of-the-art facilities, young campers will learn to embrace challenges with curiosity, and will be able to pursue their passions while enjoying all that our incredible campus has to offer. Join us in this camp that merges classic fables with modern education. Students will read a fable per day, understand the take home message and develop one project based on the fable using iSTEAM. Technology use will include Ozobots, Scratch Jr, MakeyMakey and Lego Educational. Scratch Coding – Animation and Game Creation (ages 7-8) – Coded Minds Learn the basics of coding while creating simple video games, stories, and even art. Scratch block coding allows all of that and more! Campers will develop a minimum of one animation and one video game. Complexity of both activities will depend on the children's interest and skills. Loops, variables, conditional statements and user interface commands, and more will, will be taught. Technology use will include Scratch coding and MakeyMakey. STS Summer Camps 2022 7
Introduction to Roblox Coding & 3D Design (ages 9-10) – Coded Minds Roblox is currently one of the most played games by children. Its complexity comes from the highly customizable engine, allowing children to create virtually anything they want! This introductory camp aims to teach the basics of Roblox, from playing the game to 3D designing along with the basics of Roblox coding. Minecraft Educational Mastery (ages 11-14) – Coded Minds Minecraft Education is a powerful tool to merge educational concepts while playing a fun game. This camp will teach children several aspects of Minecraft world creation, using tools such as design thinking, block coding and resource use. The goal is to use design thinking to plan children's world creation, while integrating block coding with a minimum of 1 project a day. The complexity of projects will vary depending on the children's skills in Minecraft. The Alberta Education curriculum will be integrated where possible. High Performance Golf Camp (ages 12-17) – Pivot Pointe This half-day high performance golf program (12:45 to 3:45 pm) is designed for campers between the ages of 12 and 17. The staff is on hand to provide campers with top quality instruction each day. This golf camp is for students who already have golf experience and is designed with a high-performance focus in mind. We can accommodate the middle and high school player trying to move up on the team, and the tournament level junior looking to improve his or her tournament results. Upon arrival, all participants are evaluated by the staff so that their own instructional needs can be addressed throughout the week. Step into the adventure at Blue Devil Golf Course! Hidden away in the secluded Chaparral Valley, 15 minutes from the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir campus, we offer the convenience of an urban location surrounded in natural beauty. All students will have access to the TaylorMade Performance Centre and have access to equipment for those that do not have equipment to use. Each student will have access to the Lil’Devil Golf Course to take what they learned and apply it to the golf course each day after instruction. Brock Balog, Camp Director, is a PGA of Canada Class A Professional at TaylorMade Golf Canada, and serves as the camp director for the Pivot Pointe Sports Junior Golf Camps. Drawing on thirty- six seasons as a PGA of Canada instructor, including time spent as a coach with the Mount Royal University, Team Canada and recognized as the PGA of Canada Junior Coach of the Year, and builder of Golf Canada Future Links Program. Week 2: July 4-8, 2022 Full Day Programs 9:00 am to 3:45 pm Camps Offered by Coded Minds, NBC Camps, Fuse33, Film Camp in a Box, MiniPreneursYYC, HooStrength and Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) CAMPS OFFERED Jr Robotics (ages 4-6) – Coded Minds Robots are everywhere! They have different shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common- they are codable. This camp aims to show students several different types of robots while explaining how robots think and act to help humankind. Campers will code at least two different types of robots to beat an engineering challenge, learn the basics or robotics and engage in at least 1 project creating an interaction between robots. Technology use will include Ozobots, Scratch Jr., Lego WeDo and Spheros. Sphero BOLT Fantasia (ages 7-8) – Coded Minds Sphero BOLTs are complex robots that are codable, having several sensors, able to move in different conditions (i.e. wet surfaces, sand and grass) and have a unique motor that works like a gyroscope. This camp will give children several opportunities to play with BOLTs while exploring many of its functionalities while learning about robotics. Campers will STS Summer Camps 2022 8
complete 1 engineer challenge per day, learn the basics of BOLT coding and create collaborative projects between campers (involving story telling and role playing). The difficulty and number of challenges will depend on the number of children and their skill set. Roblox Game Design (ages 9-10) – Coded Minds Roblox is an overly complex game with an embedded game creator called Roblox Studio. It allows children to create 3D designs while coding every element of their creation. The game itself might look simple, but there is a lot of learning on the backend of it. This camp is great for children with some Roblox creation skills. Campers will create at least two Roblox games while going through the design thinking process, collaborating with friends and coding several aspects of the game. Codes such as loops, conditional statements and variables will be used. Arduino Robotics (ages 11-14) – Coded Minds Arduino is a great entry point for children interested in complex robots, engineering challenges and circuitry mastery! Arduino is a kit with over 100 pieces that can mimic several aspects of working with electronics – from power circuits to mobile boards. Put that together with its coding capability, and you have a plate full of learning for children. Campers will develop at least two projects using Arduino (using servos, breadboards, LED bulbs, sensors, and more). The group will also code and/or modify codes to fit it for a purpose as well as learn the basics of electricity and how it behaves on cables and cords. Basketball Camp (ages 9-13) – NBC Camps This four-day Complete Skills Basketball Day Camp is the perfect mixture of fun and games with outstanding skill development and hard work. NBC Camps offers training in all aspects of the sport including leadership and confidence training. NBC's Complete Skills basketball curriculum is all-encompassing to help athletes develop and master skills to play the game of basketball with excellence. STS Keepin’ It Crafty Camp (ages 4-8) Do you love building, creating, crafting and painting? Do you get excited to make new things and share them with others? Do you love creating different types of art with bright and beautiful colours and crazy cool materials? Well get ready to create some gorgeous masterpieces this summer with Ms. Forgay. This club will make you smile, the techniques will improve your creative skills, the colours will awe and the results will drop your jaw! Hope to see you there! Program founder Kim Forgay is a passionate elementary educator with over 8 years of experience in the field. Having completed her Masters of Arts in Learning and Technology, she is a big advocate for incorporating technology purposefully into the classroom. She loves crafting, cats and enjoy putting a sparkly twist on the lessons that are created. Lego/Clay Stop Motion Animation Camp – Film Camp in a Box (ages 7-12) Film Camp in a Box delivers the excitement of Hollywood to campers with a blockbuster week packed with action, adventure, mystery and a lot comedy. Mentored by master filmmakers, campers will engage in hands on exploration of the stop motion animation process, including pre-production, production and post production. Working in small crews, they will learn about stop motion animation, set design, script writing and editing. Campers will then create their own stop motion animation and edit a short film and movie trailer. Each film crew will use a Mac Book, and HD stop motion camera under the guidance of their own film maker. All arts supplies are provided. Entrepreneur Camp – MiniPreneursYYC (ages 7-12) Hey BizKids! Ready for a fun competition? While working in teams to compete for the best-selling product, kids learn the basics of entrepreneurship and business in the most fun ways! From idea generation, to branding, to innovating vs inventing, to making sense of their financials, to marketing, to customer service and sales, the skills learned and practiced are useful in oh so many aspects of everyday life. Over the course of the camp, kids will work toward the final challenge which will be held on Friday. Using iSTEAM (innovation, science, technology, engineering, arts and math), campers will learn the fundamentals of electrical circuits and coding! This camp is great for those who love to be creative and tinker with technology. Campers will merge art and tech in at least two projects while learning art and coding concepts. Technology use will include Ozobots and Scratch Jr. Jr Engineering Academy – Exploring the Universe (ages 7-8) – Coded Minds Get your child ready for a space travel on this camp filled with wonders from the universe! From planets to black holes, this camp teaches several astronomy concepts to get children excited about space! Concepts such as supernovas, big bang, black holes, space travel will be covered while blending it with storytelling, design, coding and robotics. Technology use includes block coding, Lego Educational, Ozobots and Spheros. Minecraft Clash (ages 9-10) – Coded Minds Get ready for a camp full of friendly competition and collaboration! Campers will create teams and clash on several challenges using creativity, design and coding! To provide a daily challenge for campers while explaining concepts of design thinking, coding and research! Challenges complexity will vary depending on campers Minecraft Skills. Technology use will include Minecraft Educational Education and MakeyMakey. 3D & Virtual Reality Design (ages 11-14) – Coded Minds The design industry is changing tools faster than ever. With the advent of user friend tools, Virtual Reality (VR) is becoming the best tool to design anything, from chairs to cars! This camp aims to navigate students to several aspects of 3D design – from software to VR. Campers will develop two computer and two VR projects using their own interests while blending several artistic concepts such as primitive shapes, color balance and perspectives. Technology use will include TinkerCad and Gravity Sketch from Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets. Disclaimer: Extensive use of VR can be damaging to children's eyes and VR time will be based on each child's comfort level. Volleyball Camp (ages 11-14) – NBC Camps The Complete Skills Volleyball Day Camp is the perfect mixture of fun and games with outstanding skill development and hard work. NBC Camps offers training in all aspects of the game including leadership and confidence training. NBC's Complete Skills volleyball curriculum is all-encompassing to help athletes develop and master skills to play the game of volleyball with excellence. Film Making Workshop (ages 9-13) – Film Camp in a Box Film Camp in a Box delivers the excitement of Hollywood to your campers with a blockbuster week packed with action, adventure, mystery and a lot comedy. Mentored by master filmmakers, campers will engage in hands on exploration of the film making process, including pre-production, production and post production. Working in small crews, they will learn about cinematography, script writing and editing. Campers will then create, act in and edit a short film and movie trailer. Each film crew will use a Mac Book, HD camera, tripod, green screen, and boom mic under the guidance of their own STS Summer Camps 2022 10

Calgary Junior Polo Camp (ages 10-15) – Calgary Polo Club In this half-day camp (9:00 am to 12:00 noon), participants learn how to ride a polo pony, hit the ball, and play in a real live polo match. Students are mounted on safe, experienced polo ponies for approximately 1 hour per day for riding instruction, polo drills, and practice games. Participants will be required to have 1-year of riding experience. Other activities include hitting cage practice (on a wooden horse), mechanical horse practice, rules and game strategy ‘chalk talk’, and foot mallet polo. There is a wind-up tournament game on the final day of camp (prizes provided), which parents are invited to attend. Financial Literacy Camp (ages 9-14) – MiniPreneursYYC Ever imagined that learning about and being smart with money would be fun? We’ve got you covered. Are your children prepared to handle their hard-earned money wisely? Your kids have made some money over the years. Now it’s time to ensure they have a solid foundation of smart, time-tested financial beliefs, habits and information to make sure they grow into financially savvy adults. Kids will learn, through fun and experiential games, conversations, role-playing, activities, and other fun processes, how their career and life choices influence their financial outcomes. Basketball (ages 12-18) – HoopStrength HoopStrength Summer Camps are BACK! We offer Basketball camps for players of all skill levels. Coaches will be instructing and teaching players how to improve in all aspects of the game. HoopStrength's goal is to grow the players skills while building up the player individually. No-Sew Stuffy Sweetness Camp (ages 7-12) - STS Do you love collecting stuffed animals and is your bedroom full of adorably cute friends you take on adventures when you play? In this exciting No-Sew Stuffy Sweetness club, you will join Ms. Forgay for the week as we work together to make some of our very own adorably sweet stuffed animals for you to snuggle and enjoy. We will engage in storytelling to learn about our new fabulous friends and work collaboratively to create individual personalities for each of them. Having completed her Masters of Arts in Learning and Technology, she is a big advocate for incorporating technology purposefully into the classroom. Art-A-Palooza Camp (ages 11-14) New to the STS summer camp line up is an exciting combination of art making in clay (hand building and wheel work) along with in explorations in drawing, painting, 3D work and fibre arts with a few of our STS faculty members. A mixed media “palooza” of fun while developing skills and passion for the visual arts. Instructors Debra Carlson Prior to 28 years teaching experience at STS, Ms Carlson taught at ACAD and other public schools. Passionate about art education as a literacy itself, Ms Carlson encourages exploration without fear, supporting imagination and skill development in an inclusive classroom. CAMPS OFFERED Coding and Storytelling for Kids (ages 4-6) – Coded Minds Digital storytelling is an imaginative and engaging way for kids to share ideas and experiences. Students first create characters, themes, and digital backgrounds using various tools. Participants will then utilize a visual programming language to create their own interactive stories and animation through code. Campers will create at least two stories while teaching storytelling concepts such as genre, climax, escalation and more. Stories might be interactive and their complexity will vary based on children’s creativity and coding/storytelling skills. Technology use will include Ozobots and Scratch Jr. Jr Robotics Engineering (ages 7-8) – Coded Minds Robots have made humankind life easier. But does your child know how and why? Bring them to this camp to learn a bit about the history of robots along with how and why we build them. Campers will be introduced to at least three different types of robots while learning how to code each one of them. Technology use will include Lego Educational, Ozobots, Spheros, Scratch, MakeyMakey, and MicroBit. Virtual Reality 101 (ages 9-10) – Coded Minds We are fast approaching the Virtual Reality (VR) frontier and all the wonders it has. Several industries have immersed themselves in VR technology, using it for designing, meetings and even conferences. This camp aims to give children a taste of VR while getting used to their own body in VR worlds. Campers will learn how to design a gallery on VR using pictures, videos, webpages as well as animated 3D objects. The gallery theme will be based on the child’s interest and the complexity based on how much time and effort they will put in it. Technology use will include the programs - First Steps and Spatial in Oculus Quest 2. Disclaimer: Extensive use of VR can be damaging to children's eyes and VR time will be based on student comfort. Mobile App Development (ages 11-14) – Coded Minds Let’s face it, we cannot live our lives without our apps anymore. Thus, why not teach our children how to develop apps? This camp aims to navigate children through the process of developing an app, from conceptualization to delivering to customers. Concepts of user interface and user experience will be introduced while preparing campers to think like users. Other campers will act as customers during app showcase. Campers will learn app development while using block coding and may develop several apps depending on their interest. Technology use will include MIT App Development and block coding. SUNS Basketball / Rising Stars Volleyball (ages 6-13) – Stryker Sports SUNS Basketball/STARS Volleyball fundamental skills two-sport co-ed camp for children ages 6 to 13. This camp is ideal for players who have limited or no experience in either sport or who just want a chance to try both sports. The camp features three hours of basketball fundamental skills development in the morning and three hours of volleyball fundamental skills development in the afternoons split by age groups on separate courts, ages 6 to 9 on court one and ages 10 to 13 on court two. Week 5 - August 8-12, 2022 Overnight Program Camp Offered by: Coded Minds, Fuse33, Stryker Sports Development, Film Camp in a Box, Code Ninjas, Ares and Okotoks Fencing Club, University of Calgary Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Ten Peaks and STS CAMP OFFERED Magic Makers (ages 4-6) – Coded Minds Does your child love magic? Campers will learn the science behind some of our favorite magic tricks and get the opportunity to experiment and create their own. Campers will explain and experiment with at least one magic trick per day while allowing them to modify or create their own version of the trick. Technology use will include MakeyMakey, Ozobots, and Scratch Jr. Game Creation Lab (ages 7-8) – Coded Minds Against popular belief, creating a game is very easy and the concept used on simple games is just improved/expanded on more complex games. This camp aims to give children the basic graphs on how to create games, make them appealing and challenging, much needed basic concepts to become a successful game creator. Campers will be able to explain the basics of game creation while allowing the children to create at least 1 game per day. Coding concepts such as loops, conditional statements, variables and user input will be explained. Technology use will include Scratch and MakeyMakey. Becoming a YouTuber (ages 9-10) – Coded Minds Becoming a YouTuber is no easy job. It requires a lot of creativity, planning and skills like video editing and design. Storytelling is a must as only good stories are heard. This camp brings all these skills to life while allowing children to create their own videos that can be used to start their own YouTube channel. Campers will learn about the different types of videos that can be created, different tools and how to engage with their audience. Concepts of storytelling will be presented while creating the videos. Technology use will include different types of cameras, lighting poles, and video editing software (based on children's needs). Python & Pygame: Game Development Projects (ages 11-14) – Coded Minds Python is the most used coding language nowadays and for good reason – it is color coded, easy to master and very intuitive. This camp will navigate students through several aspects of Python coding, allowing them to merge projects with Pygame while creating their own games. Syntaxes like loops, if then else, while loops and more will be taught. No previous experience with Python is required for this camp. Campers will develop at least two games using different libraries and syntaxes from Python. Complexity of the games and projects will vary based on children’s coding skills. Technology use will include Python and Pygame. Wearable Tech Camp (ages 8-12) – Fuse33 Makerspace / MakeFashion EDU Fuse33 in partnership with MakeFashion EDU will offer this full-day STEAM camp. This camp offers a unique learning experience designed to introduce participants to the design learning process in a collaborative and supportive environment. Participants will explore where design and technology intersect as they jump into the world of wearable technology. This activity offers hands-on experience designing and creating a wearable tech garment from start to finish. Students will have the opportunity to create light-up garments, using technology from the designs seen internationally on the MakeFashion runway or movie props as seen in Ghostbusters and Last of Us. The focus of the workshop will be on creativity and storytelling through fashion-tech design. conveyed through a proposal, and practical experience going from a design to a physical garment. This workshop will be with an instructor from Fuse33 and a PhD student from the University of Calgary. Become a Roblox Developer (ages 9-13) – Code Ninjas Ninjas will learn the basics of game building and creative development in Roblox: an exciting, user-generated online gaming platform similar to Minecraft®. You will use Roblox to create much more than just a game! Open to all levels of experience, this camp will teach you how to plan, design and build your own 3D world. Potential UNLOCKED: It is a hands-on, fully guided experience led by our awesome team of Code Senseis. Outdoor Education (OE) Camp (ages 8-12) – STS Experience one of STS’s flagship programs - outdoor education. During this full-day camp, participants will explore the 220-acre STS campus and enjoy hiking on the trails, canoeing on the pond, navigating orienteering courses, and trying out the 25-foot indoor climbing wall. This is a great way to introduce your children to a number of outdoor recreation activities including: canoeing, indoor rock climbing, navigating with a map and compass, and day hiking. Woven throughout all of these activities in this four-day program (starting on a Tuesday) will be safety management strategies and practices. Aside from learning new skills and being active, this camp will introduce campers to peers who share an interest in exploring new opportunities outdoors. Activities will be instructed and supervised by professionals from the STS outdoor education program. SUNS Basketball / Rising Stars Volleyball (full day) (ages 10-13) – Stryker Sports SUNS Basketball/STARS Volleyball fundamental skills two-sport co-ed camp for children ages 10 to 13. This camp is ideal for players who have limited or no experience in either sport or who just want a chance to try both sports. Road to Research (R2R) Camp (ages 14-17) – STS The STS Road to Research (R2R) is the first program of its kind in Alberta education’s curriculum, providing high- school students a platform to broaden their academic knowledge and get ahead of the curve. R2R will help students gain an in-depth understanding behind research, theory of knowledge, general sciences and technology. Creating and executing their own research studies, students will gain first-hand research experience and be introduced to the vast career opportunities within and outside of research. The R2R offers students a research certificate and can develop the skills that may also support the completion of IB program components. Within this unique program, students will develop the necessary skillsets to pursue laboratory work experience while in high-school and through university. With the one-week program, students will learn the basic principles of research, how and where to collect information and data, and ethical and confidentiality of research and that may also be linked to the field of medicine. Participating students can choose their research study from the list of project ideas provided or create their own. Students in the IB Programme have the option to get a head start on their upcoming requirements. In addition to learning the basic principles of research, students may apply some of this knowledge and understanding to their Grade 10 Personal Project, Extended Essay, and/or Internal Assessment task. Catering to their academic and vocational interests, this program will help prepare students for their future research endeavours. Critical thinking, collaboration, and scientific writing skillsets will be further developed while students execute research projects within and outside the academic curriculum. (Common requirements for medical school applications) Road to Research Instructor Adrianna Giuffre STS is very fortunate to have Ms. Adrianna Giuffre join us as a guest researcher and whose area of expertise is in Neuroscience. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario. Adrianna is currently working on her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Calgary and has also been able to work on a collaborative project at Oxford University. She will have the opportunity to complete a Post-Doctoral fellowship at Oxford moving forward. Fencing Camp (ages 9-12) – Okotoks Fencing Club & Ares Pentathlon & Fencing Club (APFC) Fencing is one of the original Olympic sports and one that individuals of all ages can practice. This fencing camp provides an exciting and inclusive opportunity for youth to try the sport. Fencing is a fun activity for developing physical literacy skills like agility, balance, and coordination. Students will receive an introduction to the sport - teaching footwork, technique, and giving an opportunity for bouting. University of Calgary Hunter Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation / Ten Peaks – Entrepreneurial Thinking in Action Camp (ages 14-17) The Introduction to Entrepreneurial Thinking in Action Camp offers a unique hands-on learning experience for students entering grades nine through twelve.
