Stratford High News June 2021 From The Principal's Desk Tēnā koutou e whanau mā o te Kura Tuarua o Whakaahurangi Naumai, haere mai koutou ki te kawepūrongo o Pipiri With the first days of winter comes the halfway point of the term. The temperature has dropped and has taken some time to adjust, but the snowcapped mountain looks a picture as a backdrop to our community. The introduction of the black ‘dress’ style trousers has been timely and most students are following the guidelines and wearing the correct trousers. Please support us here at school by ensuring your child leaves home with the correct uniform. The uniform flyer was in the last newsletter and is also on our website. Our ‘Bullyfree SHS’ campaign has begun and has been well supported. Pink shirt day was wonderful with staff and students supporting the cause, sending a powerful message that we won’t tolerate any form of bullying here at school. We understand that teenagers are at a stage of their lives where from time to time they say the wrong thing. However, having adults and students around them who are prepared to have a conversation about this is important. Being an upstander takes courage. Over the past 2-3 years there has been a significant review of NCEA. As a result of the review, the next 5 years will see a number of changes taking place, with some of the changes already in place. Our Teacher Only Day on Thursday the 20th May was an opportunity to learn more about these changes and how we as a school will implement these. This year there are two more teacher only days that provides us the opportunity to learn more and plan for the changes. Our Variety Concert was a brilliant night. Thanks must go to Mr Orr and Nancy Kirk, our Arts Captain, and all those other staff and students who helped pull the concert together. Thank you to the community who came and supported the evening. All proceeds are donated to Team Hope. In staff news, Mrs Fiona Dormer has resigned from her position as a Teacher Aide in Te Rangimarie. Fiona has been an integral part of Special Needs unit for many years and we thank her for her services to Stratford High School. Mr Michael Gaastra, our Drama Teacher, has resigned from his position. He will be missed by us all and our students have valued his gentle and supportive way in the classroom. Good luck to all students during our Senior Assessment Week next week. These assessments are a good opportunity to review how the academic year is going and make appropriate changes going forward. Tofa soifua, Cameron Stone, Principal
The pigs have arrived Just letting you know we now have two lovely little piglets in the new pig enclosure (next to the cricket pitch). You are welcome to go and visit them! They are just settling in so are still a bit shy but hopefully they will become more friendly over time. We have developed a NEW food management plan for form classes. The excess food from school lunches is being used to supplement the feed for the pigs. We have run a competition for naming the new additions! Watch the daily notices for their new names. SPONSORS FOR OPEN EVENING We are seeking sponsors for our advertising for the 2021 Open Evening. This event will be on Wednesday 7th July and the Stratford Press advertising will be on June 30th. Pink Shirt day - SHS Bully Free Project Pink shirt day was acknowledged on the 21st May, with the large majority of students and staff wearing pink. $640 was raised which is going to the Mental Health Foundation to support them in their work dealing with the harm bullying causes. Andrew Cowie from Netsafe enjoyed the day with our students. Along with the fundraising, form classes were asked to provide postive messages and a photo. Well done to Me form class for their great messages and we hope they enjoy the chocolate cake. Bully free Stratford High School project! On May 19th we launched a project aimed at dealing with bullying and its impact on our school. We wish to take a whole school approach with staff and student commitment and where we can, involve the wider community. The aim is to promote prosocial behaviour along with addressing bullying. Students have recently attended a Netsafe presentation looking at cyber safety and strategies to use when bullying occurs. Our first form class workshop was around building awareness of bullying behaviour focusing on the 3 P’s; purpose, pattern and power. Feedback from staff and students was positive. This week the students examined verbal bullying and should be able to describe the difference between banter and bullying. We want the students to take the skills and confidence they develop over the year and spread them more widely or use them to make a bigger impact next year. This is the concept of Whanaungatanga where there is a sense of belonging and connection and everyone feels included and safe.

Calling all old Mobile Phones A way to help Sustainable Coastlines look after NZ’s coastlines and waterways. It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy boxes and bring into school any unwanted mobile phones. These phones are collected to help reduce waste sent to landfills, save valuable materials and energy, and help look after New Zealand’s waterways. Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have into the reception office at school. Please remove the sim card and factory reset it before you drop it in. You can also include the charger. Have you heard of ‘Nangs’? It appears ‘Nangs’ have become a significant problem amongst our teenagers across New Zealand. The use of Nangs carries risk and is readily available for all ages to use. It is important we open up conversations about the use of dangerous substance and ensure our tamariki understand the risks involved. https://theconversation.com/explainer-what-is-nitrous-oxide-or-nangs-and-how-dangerous-is-it- 108019
