This means a lot because our whole family has been through so much and she in particular has been through some stuff that no 15-year-old should have to go through. Our success in regional communities has involved developing community-based trainers who provide a wonderful connection in their community and give us the capacity to serve larger numbers of young people. Strong results in regional areas are a testament to the belief of the school leadership teams and the community business leaders who share this vision and have readily promoted Youth Opportunities in their communities, especially Port Augusta and Whyalla, to raise additional funding. Strong and consistent financial supporters are vital to our work and we wish to recognise particularly the significant and sustained contributions of board members Melanie Champion de Crespigny Matthew Rowe Andrew Reilly and Graham Hobbs. WHY Young people in South Australia face an increasing number of challenges as they transition into adulthood. These challenges if not addressed often lead to disengagement OUR PROGRAM from school, a negative self image and the IS NEEDED potential to fall into a cycle of disadvantage. (and where it’s delivered) Vulnerable young people often have weak family support, suffer emotional or physical abuse, and see little positive in their futures. 60 hours of our Personal Leadership Training changes lives. It gives young people an alternative path to avoid or overcome seriously negative impacts like bullying, depression, alcohol and substance abuse, and not completing their school education. We work in schools with higher levels of social and economic disadvantage, giving their young people the opportunity to believe in themselves. In 2012/13 we celebrated working 10 or more years with five secondary OUR schools: Craigmore, Le Fevre, Salisbury, Seaford and Woodville.
