Bring your bags to the youth football building with you. DO NOT leave anything in the locker room. - You will need to be picked up in front of the high school at 5:00. You may not enter the high school or wander the school grounds. You can get physical forms from the office or from your doctor. - Emergency form - Co-curricular policy - Concussion form - NON-REFUNDABLE $80/$40 pay-to-play fee and form ($20 for 6th graders) (checks payable to BCMS) - Permanent bus pass request Remind.com Parents are required to sign Remind.com to receive quick reminders and announcements from the coaches. Runners who have a phone should also sign up. Text @19bctrack to 81010 or go to to rmd.at/19bctrack to join. Team information/schedule changes/cancellations The coaches will send out weekly announcements via e-mail. However, last minute schedule changes and cancellations will be communicated as soon as possible via Remind.com.
Dual-sport athletes: You may participate in track if you play other sports like soccer, softball, or baseball as long as you can attend MOST track practices and meets. If you are going to be absent for another sport, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE YOUR ABSENCES GET ENTERED INTO THE ABSENCE DOCUMENT AHEAD OF TIME. 6 th Graders For the first time, the Tri-Valley Conference is allowing 6th graders to complete in track, but ONLY if a team has fewer than 25 7th/8th grade boys and girls each. Coaches will not be allowed to bench a 7th or 8th grader in favor of a 6th grader. Our team numbers are typically above 25 boys and girls each, so we anticipate that our 6th graders will not be allowed to compete at TVC meets. However, we would like to invite serious 6th graders to practice with us and learn all about track and field. Sixth grade runners will need to turn in the same paperwork, follow the same team expectations, and attend all practices. However, 6th graders will have a reduced fee of $20 instead of the standard $80/$40. Sixth grade runners will not receive a uniform. At the end of the season, 6th graders will be able to participate in our intersquad meet on Thursday, May 23. Sixth graders who are disruptive to practice or refuse to make an effort will be asked to leave the team. Required items for practice: - Running/athletic clothes (no jeans, pajama pants, street shoes) - Sweats/warm-ups (tops and bottoms required every day for all possible weather) - Supportive/athletic undergarments - Running shoes and socks - LARGE reusable water bottle WITH YOUR NAME ON IT (ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED EVERY DAY) - Healthy pre-practice snack - Failure to dress properly for practice will result in an unexcused absence Attendance: You are excused from practice if you were not at school that day. If you were at school that day, then you are expected to be at practice. If you have two unexcused practices, you will not be able to participate in the next meet. If you have three or more unexcused practices, you may be dismissed from the team. We will keep track of excused absences on a shared Google Doc. We will e-mail this to all parents and athletes at the beginning of the season. If you need to miss practice or a meet for an appointment or other conflict, YOU OR A PARENT MUST ENTER YOUR ABSENCE INTO THE ABSENCE DOCUMENT BEFORE PRACTICE STARTS. DO NOT just tell a coach. DO NOT send a friend to tell the coach that you are going to miss practice. If you are late to school or absent on the day of a meet, you MAY NOT COMPETE at the meet unless you have a doctor’s note. This is a strict office rule.
Practice expectations: - Arrive to practice on time and prepared. - Dress for all types of weather. Bring a sweatshirt and pants EVERY DAY. - Go to the bathroom, FILL YOUR WATER BOTTLE , and eat your snack BEFORE you head for the track. - DO NOT TALK while coaches are giving instructions. - Absolutely no swearing or inappropriate language at any time or place - WATCH OUT FOR OTHER RUNNERS WHENEVER ON THE TRACK. Most high school runners are bigger and faster than you are, so get out of their way. - No cell phones out during practice unless you are contacting your parents or using it as a timer. - Be respectful to all coaches, teammates, and equipment. - Always give your best effort and complete the entire workout. - Report serious injuries to your coach. - Do not create drama at practice. - Encourage your teammates. - Keep negative comments to yourself. - Do not leave the track area without telling your coach. - Put all equipment back in its proper location. - Clean up all trash and belongings when you leave. Academics: Athletes will need to maintain passing grades in four out of six classes in order to be a part of the track and field team. The office will check your grades throughout the season on FRIDAYS. If you are failing more than two classes, you will be suspended from the team until you can show proof of passing. Uniforms: You will be issued a team jersey and shorts. You are required to wear these to compete in meets. You are allowed to wear undershirts or leggings/tights under your uniform. THESE SHOULD BE A SOLID, NON-DISTRACTING COLOR LIKE BLACK or WHITE. Please do not wear jewelry, watches, sunglasses, or hats during events. Shoes: You running shoes should be designed for running and be fairly new. Worn out shoes or shoes designed for other sports can cause injury. You can learn more about which running shoes are best for you by visiting the Runners store on the corner of Wackerly and Jefferson in Midland. Spikes: You are not required to have track spikes for meets. However, if you are serious, competitive athlete who plans to stick with track for a few years, you should look into purchasing track spikes. Track spikes are for competing at meets and for time trials. DO NOT wear them at practice unless requested by a coach. If you are a casual athlete or do not plan to run track in the future, you do not need spikes.
Injuries: You can expect to be sore after the practices or difficult workouts, especially if you have not been active during the winter. Soreness does not count as an injury and you should still practice. However, you should report any long-term sharp or extreme pain that is affecting your running stride. If the pain persists for several days, you should make plans to see a doctor or trainer on your own. The middle school team does not have access to an athletic trainer. If you are injured, it is your responsibility to take care of your injuries (ice, stretching, pain reliever, etc.). If you are unable to run, it is very important that you continue to stay active with ab work, stretching, swimming, biking, etc. You will also be expected to help out the coaches as needed. Use your best judgment when it comes to illness. You are expected to practice if you have a minor headache, minor stomachache, minor cramps, or a minor cold. You should not come to practice if you have a migraine, vomiting, fever, or major intestinal distress. Number of events: Middle school track athletes can enter a maximum of three events per meet. You may not enter running events that are back-to-back in the order of events unless there are special circumstances. Be willing to try new events or events that might not be your first choice if it is needed for the team. We will do our best to put you in events you want, but it is also important to make sure we do what is best to score points for our team. Types of meets: All eligible, healthy 7th and 8th grade runners are guaranteed participation in our four double-dual TVC meets. At double-dual meets, everyone can compete in up to three events. We will compete against two other TVC schools at double-dual meets. For Invitationals, we are limited to the “A” relay teams and a limited number of the top athletes per individual event. In an invitational, you might only participate in one or two events so we can take as many athletes at possible. Invitationals may have anywhere from 4-20 different teams from around the area. Athletes can earn medals for top finishes and the top teams will receive trophies. For the TVC Championships, we are limited to the “A” relay teams and two of the top athletes per individual event. In a championship meet, you might only participate in one or two events so we can take as many athletes as possible. The TVC Championships will have 8-10 TVC teams. Athletes can earn medals for top finishes. The Intersquad meet will be a fun, relaxed meet at home against your own teammates. Athletes will be split at random into two different teams. Everyone 6th-8th can participate. Stay tuned for more fun details! For the Megastar meet, you must rank in the top 16 individual times or the top 12 relays out of 70+ teams across the state. It is very tough to qualify for the Megastar meet. The coaches will share rankings throughout the season. Top athletes at the Megastar meet can earn medals.
