Beckenham Primary School Independent Public School 386 Railway Parade BECKENHAM WA 6107 Phone: 9458 4666 www.beckenhamps.wa.edu.au Absentee line: 0409 687 220 Dear Parents / Carers It’s been a busy fortnight and hard to believe that we are almost at the end of Week 5. School Musical/Drama production The school Musical/Drama production is fast approaching and students have been practicing for the big event. ‘The Planet Report #ICURAM8’ will commence at 4:30pm Week 5 Term 3 2018 on Thursday 6th September. Mrs Driscoll will be holding an exhibition of student artworks in the undercover area from 4pm. It is hoped that we will see many of you there on the night to watch your child/ren perform. If you’re unsure what your child needs to wear for the performance please speak to class teachers. Thank you to all families who have paid the $20.00 fee so far. If you haven’t made payment yet, you can do so in the school office. Student Representative Councillors All students in Pre-Primary to Year 6 participated in Student Council elections last week. Congratulations to all students who were elected for Semester 2. Thank you to Mrs Newsletter Hearman for organising the elections. Councillors will be presented with their badges at next week’s formal assembly (Friday 24th August). Parents are welcome to attend to watch their child/ren receive their badges. School Uniform Update At last week’s school board meeting the following changes to the school uniform policy were endorsed. Wide brimmed, bucket or legionnaire style hats are encouraged for sun protection. Beanies/caps/novelty hats are NOT part of the school dress code. No novelty footwear to be worn – roller or flashing shoes. No novelty hats. Shoes, sneakers or plain low sandals, strapped to the foot are considered appropriate. Flat shoes for girls are acceptable. Safety is important. Thongs or slip on footwear are inappropriate for school. No novelty footwear including lights or wheels are permitted. The school board supports our efforts to have all students in school uniform colours. Students will be given a verbal reminder about the correct uniform attire but if students continue to not wear school uniform minor behaviour incident reports will be issued which could lead to students missing out on Mega Play events. Your support in encouraging your child/ren to wear correct school uniform would be greatly appreciated. For further information you can refer to the parent handbook on the schools’ website. Drainage Problem After the recent rain parts of the oval and playground areas were subject to extensive flooding. This was partly because the street drains were blocked. The City of Gosnells cleaned the drains and the water started to subside quickly. The other contributing factor was damage to a drain that runs across the oval. This was unfortunately damaged during the installation of the new reticulation system. This was repaired on Monday after most of the water had drained away. It is hoped that we can now do line marking in preparation for the Faction Athletics Carnival on Friday 31 st August. NAIDOC Mural Unveiling I was honoured to unveil the Mural last Friday after the Formal Assembly. Joining me were Dana Anaru (artist) Margaret Colbung,(aboriginal elder and school board member) City of Gosnells Councillor – Olwen Searle, Vanessa Codner Chair of the School Board and parents. The Mural was created to celebrate this year’s theme of ‘Because of Her,
We Can. ’The mural tells the story of the importance of the Canning River to the aboriginal people. It provided an abundance of food and was a place of importance for families, particularly women who gave birth in the area. It still remains an important place of recreation for the local community. The mural is titled ‘Place of Abundance’. I wish to thank Dana for creating such a magnificent artworks and Deborah Holloway for her hard work making it happen. Deborah liaised with Bunnings in Cannington for donations of paint, brushes and cleaning materials. I thank her and the management of Bunnings for their support of our school. Cyber Bullying Cyberbullying is becoming a concern to parents. These issues around when I was at school. Cyberbullying occurs when the internet, email or phone are used to deliberately and repeatedly engage in hostile behaviour to harm someone. It is sometimes used as an extension of other forms of bullying and can result in a child experiencing social, psychological and academic difficulties. Here are a few tips to help parents: Talk to your child about cyberbullying before it happens. Work out strategies to address cyberbullying that you are both comfortable with, so your child knows what to expect if they do report their concerns to you. Establish one or two other trusted adults your child is comfortable to approach about their concerns Be aware of what your child is doing online and explore it with them. Try to locate the computer or device in a shared or visible location. Discuss the kinds of sites that are okay to explore and those that aren’t. Have clear rules about online activities. Help your child block anyone who sends offensive content. Most social networking services allow users to block and report someone who is behaving badly. KIND TO OTHERS If you think your child is being cyberbullied you could: Discuss any mood or behaviour changes with them. Notify the police immediately if you have serious concerns for your child’s safety. Work with your child to save evidence of the cyberbullying behaviour. It may need to be followed up by the school, ISP, mobile phone carrier or police. In my experience cyberbullying incidents that I have been made aware of, have occurred out of school hours. As part of school policy, students do not have access to mobile phones during the school day. They remain in the office until the end of the day. Each year students engage in curriculum activities about Cyberbullying. We all share a responsibility to ensure the safety of children in the social media and online world. You can find more information about cybersafety at www.cybersmart.gov.au If you have concerns that your child may be being bullied online please speak with a member of the administration team. Do not approach students or other parents about incidents. Report the matter to us so that we can investigate on your behalf. Mr Gillett has been on leave and we look forward to seeing him back at work next week. Regards Mrs Harper

BUILDING A LOVE OF READING Reading is a skill that is learnt and needs to be practised. As a parent, you can support your child by helping them read at home. Here are some great ideas for reading at home as a family. Have a special place at home to keep books and other reading materials. Encourage your child to choose what they would like to read. Be positive about their choices. Let your child see you reading – for enjoyment and to learn. Share your reading choices with your child and tell them why you have chosen a particular book or article; what you are reading and what it is making you think about. Encourage your child to set aside a regular time for reading each day. Model this yourself so your child sees you as a reader. Be interested in what your child is reading and ask them to recommend books for you to read. Visit the local library regularly so your child can browse the huge range of reading materials and ask the librarian for recommendations. Encourage your child to find things to read about their favourite topics. Explore together different formats such as audio books and graphic novels. THE ACHIEVING KIND Try out books in a series. If your child gets ‘hooked’ by the first book, they are more likely to continue reading the series. Monitor access to a computer or device, either at home or in the local library so that your child can use the internet. Buy books as gifts. Swap and share books with family and friends. Ask others about what they are reading.

The show is a musical journey into the fascinating world of numbers with Mathy Matt & his digital assistant, Tekno the computer. The pair have written catchy lyrics, to funky techno rhythms that explain Fractions & Decimals, Positive and Negative Numbers, Place Value and explore what is zero. With awesome beats and educational lyrics these songs are designed to have their mathematical principles remembered by all the students, long after the performance.
Book P&C Week NEWS Discos Just for a change from usual book parade we are having a disco. The students are all very excited about the change. Please talk with your child about their favourite book and select a character to dress in for this year’s Book Character Disco. The Junior Disco (Pre-Primary to Year 2) will be on next Wednesday, 22nd August. The Senior Disco (Year 3 to Year 6) will take place on Thursday 23rd August. Both will take place during the recess break. Students will be released ten minutes early for recess to allow them the full recess time to dance to music. Spot prizes will be awarded to students for participating and showing us their best dance moves. The Student Councils are asking for a gold coin donation to support childhood cancer research. We encourage parents to be creative. We do not expect parents to spend money on buying something new. The theme is ‘Find your Treasure’ ……so open up the wardrobe and look for the treasure there. KIND TO YOURSELF P&C NEWS Sausage sizzle orders for the faction carnival day are now available at the office or print from the school app. Place your order in the red P&C box before Friday 24th August. Don’t forget to put your child’s name and class room on the form.
HELPING HANDS BECKENHAM Dear Parents and Guardians, News Update: Sustainability Wall: The HHN children continued being thoughtful and responsible people by enjoyed making beautiful art items with re-cycled materials. The older girls made posters demonstrating ways to protect the environment by making positive choices and adopting right ways to reduce waste. For our new sustainability wall children and staff made beautiful art work using plastic bottle lids. Safety Drills: The Fire Evacuation and Lockdown drills were performed last week with children to teach them some safety precautions to be taken during times of such emergencies. All the children whether younger or older actively participated in these drills. Coles Mini Collectables: The children and staff are working so hard to collect mini collectables and we are nearly there to complete our own Mini Coles’ Shop. We’ve collected 20 pieces so far and still 10 more to go. So, if you would like to donate us your doubles then we are willing to trade. The children just have pleasurable time whenever they play with these cute little items. Coming Up Next: Cup-Cake Stall On 24th August, we are going to set up a cup- cakes stall at the school assembly to raise funds for Drought Affected Farmers in Australia. So, please help us with this noble cause by buying the cup-cakes on Friday next week. The price range will be $ 1 and $2.
