                                             February 5, 2020
Now that February is here, we are in our second semester of the school year. Thankfully, the weather has
been pretty calm this school year. In the event that we should see some snow or slippery ice, it’s a great
idea to sign up for AlertMCPS to receive text messages or emails from MCPS during weather-related
emergencies and other major events that impact school system operations. You can also sign up to
receive alerts specific to your child’s school. AlertMCPS messages are available in both English and
Spanish. Visit http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/alertmcps.aspx to subscribe.

Safety Drills

Safety is our number one priority at North Chevy Chase. In February, we will have our second
shelter/lockdown safety drill. Drills such as this ensure students and staff know what to do in an
emergency situation. Posted on the MCPS website is a video about our safety and security procedures.
This video provides an overview of our security protocols and explains in clear language the different
levels of response to incidents, including lockdown, evacuation, and shelter in place. The video can be
viewed at the following link: www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/preparedness/

Through our continued collaboration, we will provide a safe engaging learning environment for all
students.

Parent Pick Up and Drop-Off
For the safety of our children and others, please adhere to the established guidelines.

    ● Follow the direction of the patrols and/or staff on duty at the car rider drop off/pick up area.
    ● Follow the traffic pattern within the parking lot to the right of the school entrance.
    ● Remain in your car while in the Drop-Off or Pick-Up lane.
    ● Do not use the circle designated for school bus traffic to drop off children at any time.
    ● Drive slowly in the parking lot.
    ● Pull up as far as possible next to the curb/sidewalk and have your child exit the car safely on the
curb side only. (Car must be in “park” to load or unload passengers.)
    ● Carefully observe traffic in the drop-off area in front of the school before pulling out of your
position at the curb, and exiting the parking lot.
    ● Be courteous to one another.
    ● Do not block driveways of houses in the neighborhood.

Safety Reminders
    ● For the safety of our students, please make sure your children know their afterschool
transportation plans before they leave home each morning, please review emergency dismissal
        plans as well.
    ● If there is a change in the normal routine, inform the office in writing or by telephone about this
        change.
    ● If someone other than a legal guardian is picking up your child, inform the school in writing.
    ● Authorized individuals picking up your children must have a photo ID.

Dismissal Process
In an effort to have greater accountability of our students, we continue to revise our dismissal process.
We are committed to a safe dismissal process. Staff members will be stationed on the inside and outside
of the school to supervise this process.

All students riding the bus, line up in the appropriate bus line. Please be sure you review with your
children what bus they ride and what stop they will get off at the end of the day.

Families are encouraged to keep the school’s phone number in their cell phone (or with them) so you can
call the school easily should an emergency or change in plans occur. Please understand that safe student
transportation is a joint responsibility.

The end of the day is a very busy time in the classroom. Teachers are giving final homework,
instructions, and students are packing up for departure. If a student needs to leave school early for
a doctor’s appointment, travel, etc., we are asking that parents pick up the student prior to 3:40
p.m. Once we begin dismissing students it is very difficult to have interruptions to the classroom.
If your child needs to be picked up early for an appointment, please send a written note to your child’s
teacher in the morning. This will reduce excessive calls into our classrooms that interrupt instruction. In
addition, no calls for early pickup will be made after 3:15 PM. Please make sure you have contacted
the main office with any changes prior to this time. Thank you for your cooperation.

                                         Lost and Found Items

Please be sure and put your child’s name on anything that comes to school, especially on coats, jackets,
hats and gloves. We try very hard to make sure that items are re-united with their owners, but with 290
possibilities, the name can really help. Feel free to stop by and check our L&F Closet. It is quite full of
jackets and sweaters.
