Stakeholder information: Skyline Queenstown Development Project Skyline Queenstown is investing $60 million into a significant upgrade and expansion of our leisure, dining and entertainment complex - one of the most significant investments Skyline has made since the current gondola system was installed in 1987.
Introduction Skyline Queenstown is investing $60 million into a significant upgrade and expansion of our leisure, dining and entertainment complex. This development represents our vision of endeavouring to provide a world-class leisure and entertainment facility and, with visitor numbers to New Zealand expected to grow by 5.4% each year, we see the potential for investing in the future of Queenstown and New Zealand tourism. Above all, we are dedicated to creating something that local businesses and the wider community will be proud of and can enjoy for years to come. We are still in the initial stages of planning this development and your feedback is important to us. Please contact Skyline Queenstown General Manager Lyndon Thomas, or email development@skyline.co.nz with any thoughts, questions or concerns you may have. We’ve also launched a dedicated website to keep you informed about the development. Visit www.skylinedevelopment.co.nz to view artists’ impressions and find out more information about the project. Mark Quickfall, Skyline Enterprises Chairman The Development As well as a complete redevelopment of the upper complex and brand new bottom terminal building, the Luge chairlift system will be replaced and the current four-seat gondola system will be replaced with a state-of-the-art 10-seat gondola. Terminals The bottom terminal on Brecon Street will be replaced and expanded to accommodate increased visitor numbers as well as the new gondola cabins, which will be considerably larger in size than the current gondola cabins. New construction will be to the north of the current terminal; therefore, public car parking spaces will not be affected. The new and improved upper terminal and complex will double in size to house a new restaurant, conference facilities, café and retail operations. Gondola The new gondola system will be one of the most technologically advanced in the world. The current four-seater gondolas will be replaced with up to 34 new 10-seater gondolas, which is a 172% increase in capacity of the current system. The new gondola is expected to be operational by winter 2018. For more information on the progress visit: skylinedevelopment.co.nz
Chairlift The existing two-seat Luge chairlift will be replaced with a modern four-seat chairlift. The new chairs will also have the capacity to carry three Luge carts instead of the current two. Restaurant Skyline Queenstown’s Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar will undergo a revamp and expansion to accommodate up to 650 diners, nearly doubling its current capacity of 330. The restaurant, designed with a flexible configuration for multiple dining options, is anticipated to open in 2018. Conference and incentive facilities Skyline Queenstown’s conference and events space will be extended from its current area of 390m2 to 780m2 . The new facility is designed to cater for up to 770 delegates or 50 exhibition booths and will include a business centre, 200m2 plenary room and four smaller meeting rooms. The facility is expected to be operational in 2018. Market Kitchen The Market Kitchen café will double in size from 260m2 to 540m2 to provide further dining options. It will continue to offer various food stations of both New Zealand and international cuisine. Retail Four separate retail spaces are included in the development. Viewing platforms The existing 68m2 viewing platform will be extended to a total of 430m2 deck space, for guests to enjoy phenomenal views of Queenstown and surrounds from different angles. Timeline and temporary closure Proposed timeline Autumn 2017: Earthworks begin Autumn 2017: Upper complex construction begins Spring 2017: Lower terminal construction begins Autumn 2018: Skyline Queenstown temporarily closes for 8-12 weeks Winter 2018: New gondola and chairlift systems operational Winter 2018: Construction completed. Temporary closure To facilitate construction while minimising disruption to guests and other businesses, Skyline Queenstown will temporarily close for approximately 8-12 weeks in autumn 2018. The new gondola and chairlift will be installed during this shut-down period with the aim to have them operating by July 2018. For more information on the progress visit: skylinedevelopment.co.nz
About 80% of construction work will occur either side of the temporary closure, and every effort will be made to ensure the day-to-day running of the gondola, Luge, dining facilities, mountain biking and other tourism businesses won’t be affected. Project vision We are committed to contributing to the local community and tourism industry as a whole and this project provides the opportunity to not just deliver on this but have a positive impact on local businesses and drive economic growth for many years to come. Attract more visitors The development will enhance Skyline Queenstown and cater for the forecast 200% increase in visitor numbers by 2030. We will have one of the most technologically advanced gondola systems in the world, contemporary facilities and a range of leisure, dining and entertainment options, all enhanced by extraordinary views of Queenstown and surrounds. Inspire economic growth With the ability to host more visitors, the development will have a positive effect on the local economy and the New Zealand tourism industry as a whole. Reduce queue times for guests As the gondola capacity will be increased from four to 10 passengers per cabin, wait times will be significantly reduced for every gondola user – whether they’re coming up to Bob’s Peak for Skyline Queenstown, mountain biking or other tourism businesses. The new cabins will also provide more room and comfort for guests as the gondola ride is an important part of the experience. The new Luge chairlift system will also carry four people per chair, which will shorten queues for Luge riders. Provide superior conference facilities The number of conference and events guests at Skyline Queenstown is projected to increase by 500% by 2030. The new, international-standard conference and events facilities will cater to both small and large-scale events, from private business meetings to exhibitions and banquets. Our commitment Skyline Queenstown’s top priority is to minimise the impact of this development on our guests, other businesses and the wider Queenstown community. We know you love this stunning region just as much as we do, and your support with this project is important to us. We believe the ultimate effects of the development will be greatly beneficial, but acknowledge there may be some challenges along the way that will need mitigating and managing. We want to hear from you about these – please find our contact details on the Introduction page of this information kit. For more information on the progress visit: skylinedevelopment.co.nz
