SUNDAY, APRIL 10, 2022 pastor’s note Today begins the most sacred week of our liturgical experience, Holy Week. Beginning with the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem which we remember on Palm Sunday, we start the final journey to the Last Supper, the Agony in the Garden, the trial and condemnation of our Lord culminating in His crucifixion and death, the removal of the body of Christ from the cross and its placement in the dark and lifeless tomb. Then, there is silence. It isn't until Saturday evening of next weekend, at 8:15pm, that we see the hope of what God has accomplished for us. The darkness of sin and death is not the ultimate declaration about the life of Christ. Rather, the darkness is not triumphant but the light that has come into the world conquers all, even death itself. So journey with us this week and re-immerse yourself in the grace and power of what these days proclaim, recall and evoke. These are the very days that define our lives and the faith that inspires those lives to be lived in the name of the one who came to free us from sin and death. Pay particular attention to the special Holy Week schedule that is found on page three of today's bulletin. The times and events of the final days of this week are unlike any other week of the year. And you don't want to miss out on all that's available for us to participate in as we recall the deep love and boundless mercy of our God. And just as we took up a special collection on Ash Wednesday at the start of this season, on Good Friday we once again take up an offering that completely goes to support the work of the Church in the Holy Land and the Christian communities that are so much a minority there, but are nonetheless a visible and ongoing presence of what started literally 2,000 years ago when Christ sent His disciples out to continue the work of the Kingdom. The Christian community is a minority throughout the Middle East and this is our one main chance every year to show our care for and solidarity with them. Please be generous. Finally, on Tuesday of Holy Week the priests from throughout the Archdiocese of Denver gather at the Cathedral with our Archbishop for a special celebration called the Chrism Mass. In it, all the holy oils that are used for the sacraments throughout the coming year are blessed and distributed to the parishes. And in a sign of our unity with our Archbishop, the priests annually renew our commitment to live out the calling we have received to be priests for the people here in the Archdiocese. Please remember and pray for the priests this coming Tuesday. – Msgr. Tom Confessions: Monday–Friday: 8:00am, Thursday: 6:30pm, Welcome to St. Thomas More! PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD a reflection on today’s readings Grow Palm Sunday can seem like a study in contrasts. We hear the jubilant account of Jesus riding triumphantly into Jerusalem. Then we listen to the Passion narrative, reminded that Jesus' kingship bears little resemblance to royalty as we perceive it. He will suffer and He will die. As Paul describes it, "He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted Him." Jesus tries to explain this to the disciples, who don't fully grasp the events about to take place, instead quarreling over who would be the greatest. Yet even in this chaos of misunderstanding, Jesus continues to teach them, promising that those who would stand by Him in His trials will join Him in the Kingdom of Heaven. There are certainly times when we fail to fully perceive and understand all that the Lord is teaching us or why we are undergoing certain trials and difficulties. As we enter into Holy Week, we can ask Jesus to help us understand the meaning of the cross in our own lives, using this time to reflect on the meaning of His sacrifice for each of us. Go As we listen to the Passion narrative, we hear Peter betray Jesus, the soldiers jeer at Him and a passerby being told to carry Christ's cross. Only Luke's account describes the two criminals, one of whom demanded that Jesus "save yourself and us." The second criminal rebukes Him, asking Jesus to "remember me when you come into your Kingdom." After Jesus dies, the centurion glorifies God, a good man takes Him down from the cross and the women prepare His body for burial. As we enter Holy Week, we will have time to reflect on Jesus' last days, but also on the individuals in the crowd the day He died. How did they react? How would we have reacted? What can we learn from the women who stayed beside Jesus, the criminal who looked beyond his own pain and sin to see Jesus as Messiah and even Peter in his initial betrayal? During the week ahead, we can also make an effort to attend each liturgy of the Triduum using this time to deepen our faith as we prepare for Easter. Act Take time to read the Passion narrative at home. Invite Jesus into your heart. If you've fallen a little behind on your Lenten commitments, Holy Week is a great time to hit refresh. – Written by The Faithful Disciple 9
